I'm on a Mac running Firefox and also had trouble viewing a couple pdfs
in the browser yesterday. I can't remember the last time I tried it, I
generally download pdfs and view with Preview. But it could be something
to do with the pdf. My Firefox viewer, which is the one Tony recommends,

Although I haven't experienced your problem, I have found firefox to be
problematic on various machines. Particularly in older installations or
older computers. It just loses functions. Often re installation doesn't
help.

I'm running FF 2.0.0.14 on an XP desktop laptop and latest FF 2.x on a
MBP. I've noticed issues with the gmail inbox the past week or 2. Instead of
loading, it will churn for a few seconds until I close FF. I can load same
pages in IE or Opera (or Safari on MBP) without incident. I loaded the FF

open a pdf in Firefox.
The only problem I routinely have with Firefox that bothers me is that
YouTube type video players disappear from the window.
I don't know. But you can try my way as a workaround. Install the add
on PDF Download (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636)
which allows you to specify a program to handle pdfs. I went a step
farther and installed Foxit Reader
