Re: [CGUYS] Windows 7 and Windows XP mode
Doesn't M$ provide virtualization? I recall they bought out the original company that sold Virtual PC for the Mac (great product then M$ proceeded to destroy it). You should be able to run a virtual PC under Win7 and put XP on that. Worse case you could buy a Mac and run XP under a virtual PC on that. I think Sun offers this too. The advantage would be easier file transfer and possibly even ability to cut and paste between virtual and real environments. At least that is possible on the Mac. I would assume that M$ could do so ad well. Sent from my iPad Quoting Fred Jones fredjone...@softhome.net: Thanks for the replies. The old program I need (want) is called Accpac Plus Accounting. I've had it for about 20+ years and have several different businesses accounting data on it. The program is expensive and I never liked the newer versions that much so I continue to use the old one. Re: [CGUYS] Apple’s iPad: Death knell for tra ditional Macintos h computers?
You will be better served by reading those commentators who are insightful enough to recognize that the iPad is a new category. We now need to identify the computer users who fit into that new category. For creatives the need for a real computer remains. Getting an iPad does not cause me to no longer need my desktop. I use the desktop computer for what it does best and the iPad for what it does best. I won't give up the desktop. I just don't want to use it for things that the iPad does better. For non-creatives, what you say is true. Those people never had a real need for a desktop computer, but used one because there was no alternative. These people will no longer have a need for a computer. Then we have mobile creatives. They will want both. I think you are missing one aspect: Windows PCs will be disappearing at a more rapid rate than Macs. The majority of Windows PCs are used for low-level tasks that are better served by something in the iPad category. Also noteworthy is that M$ was again caught flat footed. They do not have an operating system for this new category of computer. Apple is in the lead with Google not far behind. In third place we may have HP -- if they are smart -- and HP's recent purchase of Palm suggests that they are. It also looks like RIM won't be making the transition. I keep getting faster with the iPad's virtual keyboard. I have noticed that it is far better than the one on the iPhone. Whenever I run an iPhone app on my iPad (even at the 2x setting) I see that the iPhone's keyboard is too small and has an awkward arrangement of keys. The iPad's keyboard even changes to meet my needs. For example when I am in a field that requires a URL it adds a key for .com and that key has a pop up for .org and .gov. I have typed fairly long emails with the iPad, it was fine. I have used to make online purchases, it was fine. I have used it to outline a speech using a free outliner app, it was fine. Re: [CGUYS] iPhone 4, Engineering thoughts
Read Gibson's analysis and you will understand that this is really a very marginal problem. If one has good signal strength it won't matter how you hold the phone. If your signal strength is about to go over a cliff, anything you do can potentially push you over. One of those things is touching the phone in a particular spot. They have already sold 2,000,000 of the new phones so even a 1 in a million problem will have a couple of hits. Back when I used to listen to a radio while commuting I knew to stand in specific spots on the train platform. Moving even a few inches would lose the signal. It is not magic, it is physics. On Jun 28, 2010, at 6:06 PM, phartz...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for the information. However, that is not really the issue with the iPhone. Some people in marginal reception areas are reporting problems. Some people who had reception problems with previous models are reporting the new model does not have the problem. You need to tell me what proportion of the 1.7 million iPhone 4s sold are having this problem and where they are geographically. Then compare this to the numbers who claim improved reception. Then we can figure out if there is any real problem. Should Apple have insulated the antenna from contact with external conductive material, and made that insulation an integral component of the basic phone package as opposed to offering a separate accessory that performs this function that comes in at 15% of the cost of the phone itself? Some note that the cited report does not provide enough detail to isolate the source of the problem and doesn't report anything about Windows performance at all. There is a heck of a lot of infrastructure between the server and the client. Anything in that long path could be the source of the problem. Some of the commentators obviously have long experience and can tell you that such problems often lie in unexpected places. by Savage-Rabbit (308260) writes: on Tuesday May 04, @09:51PM (#32093330) I'm not sure quite what he meant by properly supported in the wild but it sounded like he was trying to point out that sometimes you do get bugs because you implement things correctly but somebody else screwed up their implementation. A while back I had a problem connecting Linux and OS X based VPN daemons to some Microsoft VPN servers. At first it seemed obvious that this was Apple screwing up. After some considerable wiresharking and digging in Apple's source code [apple.com] I found out that Microsoft's VPN server sends malformed protocol messages which the Linux/OS X based counterparts try to parse according to the letter of the specification and exit with an error when they run into problems. Not that I'm trying to absolve Apple of all blame they can fuck up like everybody else and do so regularly, however that doesn't change the fact that it's entirely possible to render your software unusable by implementing it according to specifications. In a situation like that you can either change your software to take the buggy implementation by insert name of manufacturer into account or stick to your guns and piss off your users. by ShadowRangerRIT (1301549) writes: on Tuesday May 04, @06:29PM (#32091848) Mostly correct. One additional note: Many ISPs and routers don't do IPv6 well. So even in the good IPv6 server, good IPv4 backup case, many people will be hitting these delays because their ISP or router isn't IPv6 friendly. Since the web server can't force your ISP/ router to upgrade, they have a choice. Do they serve only over IPv4 and get guaranteed performance, or do they move to IPv6 with an IPv4 fallback, thereby guaranteeing that their site will be dog slow for a fixed percentage of their users? We want them to move to IPv6 so the transition can occur smoothly over time. But a reasonable website operator might put off the move until the absolute last second, hoping that more ISPs and routers will be ready when they do switch. But of course, if no one is serving content over IPv6, ISPs have less motivation to upgrade. Is there something else you'd recommend? There are dozens of anti-virus programs for the PC and the difference between most of them is slight. The differences are also ever changing as upgrades add or subtract features and annoyances. I was recently looking at anti-virus options for a client. I looked at both McAfee and Trend (among others) and saw very little difference between them. Technically I like Bit Defender the best, but their USA support operation is horrible. It is so bad that I won't use the product. Some products have owners who poorly maintain their software and then go in for major rewrites when sales drop too low. An example of this is Norton, whose last update made the software good again. Some people insist on only using free software, even though virus definitions are not delivered as quickly. M$ offers a free product that ain't bad. So anybody who suggests dumping one anti-virus program for another should be telling you exactly why. Their reasons may not impress you. I would not bother swapping McAfee and Trend. There just isn't enough difference to matter. If you really cared about anti-virus you would not be using a virus- prone OS. Tough competition... Re: [CGUYS] Apple Anti-trust App
The iPhone is now the top selling phone in the US. That is certainly going to get Apple a kind of legal attention it never had before. However, I expect that after Apple is finished explaining its actions the Feds will agree that Apple's actions are reasonable and not anti- competitive. Apple is not stopping anyone from developing for their products, they are just enforcing quality standards. There is a big difference between that and the stuff M$ used to do. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
