Predator drones use less encryption than your TV, DVDs
about an hour ago - by Nate Anderson | Posted in: Law Disorder

Militants have been recording video from US Predator drones in Iraq and
Afghanistan using laptops and $30 software, thanks to a total lack of
encryption.

Are you sure this wasn't an April Fools story? This is ridiculous!

Re: [CGUYS] US Military Ignoring Encryption

2009-12-17 Thread Stewart Marshall
No it is not an Aprils Fool joke and of course it is a little more
complicated than the media makes it out,

There are layers you must go through to add encryption and make it
work with equipment.

One thing the military suffers under is competing services (three
main branches plus Marines) that all procure equipment through
separate channels.

Plus the encryption has to be backwards compatible with different
types of equipment.

I am not forgiving the military for not getting this done, but it is
not as simple as it is made out to be.

They have known about this for a decade and in that time it should
have been solved.

Maybe all those Retired Generals living off the public/private nickel
could donate some of their pensions to getting it solved instead of
popping up on TV and spouting off.

They are the ones who failed to get it fixed before they took their
pensions so donate some of it back and fix it.

Or at least they think so. If I were running the operation I would
certainly want the jihadis watching my unencrypted feed. He he.

So the video feed is unencrypted, who cares? Not like you can take a
predator on a top secret mission. Are we supposed to be worried they
are watching this instead of Fox News?

What I would hope is difficult to do is *take control* of the device.

All he other data feeds are encrypted.

This is the only feed not encrypted.

Among the many trade offs involved:

You will only get half as much bandwidth for video if you encrypt.
