>Is MacJanitor still your utility of choice for "cleaning up" the Mac? MacJanitor is just a way to run the three periodic maintenance scripts on demand. It works fine for this. But it may no longer be needed. Starting in Tiger Apple replaced a tangle of UNIX methods (cron etc.) with a single, unified launcher called launchd (launchd daemon). It is in dispute whether launchd fixes the problem of "missed" events. This grousing may be from old UNIX hands who seem to hate it when anything is changed. Looking at my Mac it looks to me that launchd does the job. YMMV. * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? No, I did the autoupdate. I"ll download them first from now on.and wait a long time before doing it. I have not updated itunes to the one that came out a month or so ago because I had heard of problems with it. But, the software I have the most problem with IS my iTunes so I think I may have to do the upgrade. My USB ports show up correctly in System Profiler with one external hd on one and the USB port extender with various other items on it. But my second hd that is plugged into the 4 port extender doesn't show up. All of this worked fine before the update so that's why I linked it to that. Tom, Is MacJanitor still your utility of choice for "cleaning up" the Mac? >Not before but after reinstalling the 10.9 update I repaired permissions. Not after installing those security "fixes" tho. I have most stuff backed up. It will take hours or days to back up any further to the external drives since anything going thru USB is a drop at a time. But I think I can back up over my network to my laptop so will do that next. Sometimes updates do break things, but when this happens we usually see a flood of problem reports. I have not seen that. Typically running the update is the proximate cause, but not the real cause. Something was askew just waiting for a nudge to become a problem. I just had a terrible problem last weekend where a folder with 60GB of client files vanished. I spent a couple hours at command line trying to make the folder visible. Then I did the simple, dumb thing: ran disk utility. That fixed everything. It sounds like the USB has gone back a step. How much memory does the machine have? 2.5 GB From your description, it sounds as if just the USB devices are affected, none of the other systems, right? right. Thank you for your detailed description of the course to take. I'll have to get a firewire cable to connect the two to try it out. Right now it is working better but I will get the cable to have at hand in case it slows down again. Are you running AV software; No have you repaired permissions after installing the update? Yes Have you tried a Firewire transfer from one computer to the other? Your No. They transfer fine wirelessly thru the network but I don't want to put photos from the flash cards on the laptop first just to transfer them to the iMac. ANd I can't transfer iTunes material that way. Clearing the PRAM seems to have helped. Photo transfer from cards is a lot better but updating the iPod is still very slow. I"ll keep working on it tho. [CGUYS] Macs don't break ...was, Slow USB after update
Paula, It sounds like the USB has gone back a step. How much memory does the machine have? >From your description, it sounds as if just the USB devices are affected, none of the other systems, right? Use the System Profiler and check that the USB subsystem chain is checking out at USB 2 speeds for the bus and the devices. Also, to check if the OSX is the culprit it becomes interesting. 1) Put your laptop in Firewire 'Target' mode 2) Attach the FW Target mode laptop to the iMac via Firewire. 3) Use the Startup Disk section (control panel) of the System Preferences and choose the external version of OS X on the laptop as your startup disk. (this is the version that has not been updated) Boot the computer from that external disk. 4) Test the USB device transfer speed by hooking a device up to the USB port on the iMac. If the USB transfer rates are back to normal, then you've narrowed it down. The converse can be tested by flipping it. Put the iMac in Target mode and boot the laptop from the OS X volume on the iMac. If the laptop USB runs slower, then the files that make up OS X on the iMac are the culprit. This is step one, to verify that it is the OS X on your iMac that is affecting the USB subsystem speed. If it is not, then we have to look at if there was a firmware update or the USB itself. Start with the Target mode FW boot test first and let us know what the results are. Oh, and the FW Target mode can help speed up the backup for the iMac as well, unless you are using gigabit ethernet. Paula, I have not experienced problems after an upgrade (I am still at latest version of 10.3.9 with current patches - waiting for 10.5 to come out) on a G5 desktop and a G4 laptop. Your slow file transfers baffle me, though. Are you running AV software; have you repaired permissions after installing the update? Have you tried a Firewire transfer from one computer to the other? Your computer manual should have a detailed description of this easy connection, boot to target mode and transferring files from one computer to the other.
