No, no, no. There are very strict laws against discharging firearms within x feet of a dwelling. You're no farther in the woods than I am in Jefferson County, West Virginia, and nobody around here would stand for that. There are very valid reasons not to allow this behavior. Jan. 1, 2010: Boy most likely shot by a rifle fired into the air http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/boy-most-likely-shot-264997.html Yes, yes, yes! Where I live people hunt all year around. Laws? What laws? They do target practice in their back yards. They use each other for target practice--really. BTW, most of these neighbors are from WV, VA, KY, but now live in MD. I was out for a stroll in the woods one day and a scary looking character jumped out from behind a tree, holding his rifle, yelling, "ya scarrd muh skwarrl"--luckily all he was shooting that day was squirrels and possums--in July. Noise? There are at least 4 quarries around here, plus target practice at Aberdeen Proving Ground, noise that carries over the water about 20 miles, and those low-flying Air Force planes practicing reconnaissance missions. I'm used to it. Doesn't bother me. Skunks don't smell so bad any more either. Almost forgot about the woodpeckers that hammer on the metal downspouts at dawn. When things are too loud, I wear good quality earplugs or use noise canceling headphones with my iPod, or breathe deeply for about 5 minutes. County, city, 'burbs, all can be noisy in different ways. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

We have gotten off the topic of the thread, which was initially devices for helping with sleep by producing restful sounds. Someone mentioned gunfire, and so here we are. When I first moved out here to the country, I soon became acquainted with gunfire in my vicinity and after perusing the county code, I twice contacted the county sheriff seeking clarifications about what is allowable. Twice I tried to find out, and twice my queries were never answered. I took the resultant silence to either be my answer or an expression on the part of the sheriff on the subject. FWIW, when it isn't hunting season in the county, the local farmers have to be on serious lookout for those rednecks who will shoot their cows and horses since they can't go after deer. Seriously, this is a big problem and the local "Crimesolver's" page on the county website routinely seeks information about these frequent crimes. As mentioned earlier, some broadband service out here could really help matters by offering something to do other than shootin' or tearin' things up in ATVs. Anyway, and back to devices that generate sound to help with the inducement of sleep, there are any number out there to be had. I have never used one, so I cannot add any personal experience to the mix, but stand by my suggestion about using an old TV. Re: [CGUYS] sound machine advice
You mean in the morning recently? Probably just deer season. Depending on your state, chances are they can't hunt on Sunday. And the season doesn't last long. Regardless, I'm sure it's illegal to shoot close to houses, so don't get a noisemaker; call the police! They will talk to them. What bothers us woods dwellers more than shooting is the sound of *construction*. Carries for miles, and means more forest is being ripped up. Starts with the eerie subsonic sounds of the well drillers, usually ends with the heavy equipment trying to cover all the plumbing and make a yard. > A little bit of correction may be in order here. Re: [CGUYS] sound machine advice
It depends on where and what time of the season it is. In Wisconsin I expected to hear gunshots from the Saturday before Thanksgiving until the Sunday after Thanksgiving. the 9 day rifle/shotgun deer hunting season. Other than that it was only an occasional gunshot we heard. 10 years of living in the country. Stewart At 12:27 PM 1/2/2010, you wrote: A little bit of correction may be in order here. Re: [CGUYS] sound machine advice
Haven't looked recently, but I've seen regular "music" CD discs for that purpose. Just pop it into your CD player and set it on repeat. Record or purchase an mp3 track with whatever sound you want and set it to repeat on your iPod or favorite mp3 player, sitting in a docking station that has speakers. Google "white noise mp3 file" and you get lots of options. Rain noise perhaps? The mp3 option gives you the ability to change to a different background noise easily. If you are really looking for a stand-alone noise box, Google "white noise box". http://www.white-noise.us/ is the first hit. I never have any trouble falling asleep, so I can't advise as to what is actually effective. Exhaustion works for me. I've seen clock radios with noise built in. I noticed something recently - our Walmart humidifier, on a fan level of 2/3, hums along nicely and covers up a lot of noise.
