I know that this isn't really a cooker concern, but I still haven't see an
upgrade for 8.2 to upgrade OpenSSL to 0.9.6g or better. I see that 9.0 has
the upgrade. With the Slapper Worm around that concerns me.

openssh-server depends on openssh
openssh depends on openssl
try totally removing the openssl and openssh* packages, and then:
rpm -iv openss*.rpm
(since the exapntion of the '*' is in alphabetical order openssl will be
listed last).
Notice that you get:
