Well, I added wins to my hosts line in nsswitch.conf and no segfault; tried as
root and a normal user, tried in bash and zsh, no segfault with a variety of
different garbage domain names.

Sorry, I didn't get an email with your first question from bugzilla...

Well, I'm actually only using DNS - but I'm using the default nsswitch.conf from
glibc-2.3.1-7mdk which contains: 

hosts:  files nisplus nis dns wins

After removing wins, the lookup works correctly, no segfault anymore...

I noticed that too, but I think it is due to the addition of keychain
for auto-authorization.
I think I tried a while ago, and without keychain, ssh behaved.
