Re: [CnD] How do you melt a stick of butter in the microwave?

2020-12-02 Thread Pamela Fairchild via Cookinginthedark
When I melt butter in the microwave, I often use one of the thaw cycles. I
put the butter into a micro safe glass container, like a cereal bowl. After
running the shortest thaw cycle once, I check the butter, if there are large
chunks left I cut them up, then put it on for a second thaw cycle. I find
this does a good job without letting the butter splatter like it will on a
normal high cooking cycle.
I need to take time to cut up the butter if I have put it in frozen rather
than off the countertop or refrigerator, or if I am melting more than one
stick at a time. If I am melting a full pound, (4 sticks) I melt it in a
serving bowl rather than a cereal bowl. If I remembered to take the butter
out first, I cut each stick in half or in thirds before melting. This is
only necessary because I am melting so much of it. If I am mixing the butter
into cookie dough or cake batter, I soften it enough so it could be spread
easily, then put it in the mixer and cream it together with the sugar until
it is fluffy.

Hi.

I've decided to attempt to make a hash brown casserole, and one of the
ingredients is a stick of melted butter. Rather than try to pour it into the
mixing bowl from a hot item on the stove, I've decided to use my handy dandy
microwave to do the deed. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for
any pointers that I can get. What should I put the butter in to nuke it? Do
I break up the stick, or leave it whole? Should I let it warm for a few
minutes at room temperature? Also, how long do I microwave it?

That's all I can think of. If there are other things I need to know, please
tell me. I'll share this recipe soon. It takes a 9 by 13 dish to bake in,
and it calls for 2 pounds of shredded hash browns, so it's a lot. It's very
good.

Have a blessed day and don't work too hard.

Kevin,
If it's the hashbrown casserole I'm thinking of, yes, it's really
good. There are no leftovers when I make it here, so no freezer meals
get made from it. Have fun making it. Don't be afraid to get your
hands dirty to make sure everything is evenly distributed both when
mixing and spreading into the pan. It's a winner to take to potlucks,
too.

More Later,
Dani

2020-12-01 Thread Immigrant via Cookinginthedark
I would slice the butter, this way the smaller pieces will melt much faster
than the whole stick. I would put them into a small microwavable bowl and
cover it with a paper towel, to prevent splatters. Start with 10-20 second
intervals, depending on how powerful your microwave is, then carefully
remove the paper towel and very carefully check the butter. Based on how
melted it is, you will decide how much more time to add. Once you have done
it a time or two, you will know the approximate time it takes to melt the
butter, so you will be checking it less frequently.

Hi Kevin,

When I melt butter in the microwave, I place the stick or whatever the quantity
is into a ceramic bowl that is deep enough so that melted butter cannot slosh
over the edges and burn my hands.

I then cut the stick down into large chunks. Place the bowl in the micro and
set to 30 seconds and start it. I take it out and check to see if its melted or
still needs more time. Depending on the size of the chunks that are remaining I
will set the microwave anywhere from 10, 20 or 30 seconds again and let it
start. I check it again and if it now needs more time I will do in 10 second
intervals. I don’t want to over heat, cook or burn the butter just enough to
melt into a liquid form.

I melt my butter for my brownies in the following manor:
In a microwave safe bowl place the butter which you have cut into about 5
to 10 pieces.

I then microwave it for about 45 seconds and then stir it and return to the
microwave for an additional 30 seconds.
I don't think it really has a right/wrong way. The goal is to check and stir
to make sure the butter has melted. You can feel this with a spoon-I use a
wooden or silicone spoon. That way if I forget to take it out of the bowl, I
won't kill the microwave.
