[CoTyroneIreland] Susanna Patterson & Rob't FINLEY and locations

2017-04-18 Thread Teena from BC
Hello Boyd

I love some of these old manuscripts and bios. of Co. Tyrone people.
Indeed, some researchers are very fortunate to find one written on
their ancestors.!

Especially the ones that are compiled before 1922. A few authors
actually had research done at Dublin and include, in their book,
their discoveries.

I was thrilled to discover years ago, the 'LOVE Family History' by
Rev. William DeLoss Love Jr. PhD 1851-1918. In this, there are
references to wills, an Administration bond, and inventories, which no
longer exist. Such precious documents to have been copied!

When I read the piece on Robert Finley, my thought was that as he was
a soldier, it would have been very possible for him to meet Susanna
Patterson. Throughout Strabane's history there have been garrisons
stationed there.

I know of a Robert LOVE who was stationed at Strabane in June of 1818,
yet he was born in Aryshire. (so not one of mine)

the best to you all~ Teena

Re: [CoTyroneIreland] birth places

2017-04-18 Thread K Cooper
Death certificates are another land mine for erroneous information. My
uncle gave my great-aunt's birthplace (or someone heard him say) "Dunegal"
- but it was really Newtownstewart, County Tyrone. Our family was among
those who did not reminisce about the old country, so what did he know, he
was from Philadelphia!

Also, I have actually seen records indexed as "Strabane, Donegal" (was
Strabane ever in Donegal?) and other combinations that I don't recall at
this moment.

It doesn't help that our ancestors sometimes gave a local version of their
birthplace, as Dennis said, whereas the records are located by parish,
town, or registration district. So, some of my ancestors might have said
Dunmullan, Omagh or Omey, Cappagh (parish), Strabane, etc.

I think it is all a conspiracy to keep genealogists on their toes!

Kathleen

2017-04-18 Thread Boyd Gray
These are all fascinating histories, Teena and I wish one of them belonged
to my tree. Oh to know in so much detail what happened to people when they
disappeared into America. We all have lost dozens if not hundreds in that
way.

However, I am often perplexed by the placenames given in these family
histories, usually written by the descendants of the emigres who do not
really know Ireland and its geography or society. One, for example gives
their home as Antrim, Co Tyrone. And this one gives a marriage of someone
from Carrickfergus to someone else from Strabane, opposite ends of Ulster.
I know that my own folk rarely married "beyond" the schugh"! With no form
of transport except Shank's Mare, they did not travel much more than a few
miles from home in their entire lives. It was mainly clergymen or the very
rich who could make such distant connections so I suppose that has to be
the explanation, if there has not been an error.

But still, what fun it would be to "own" one of these and to tease out the
truth as far as it was possible.

Thanks.
