I am experiencing a strange issue with Thunderbird(1.5) and
courier-imap(4.1.0), and I want to verify that it is not a problem with
how I have courier setup. I have imapd configured so that it enforces
STARTTLS on port 143, but when I connect to it with thunderbird I all I

What led you to believe that Thunderbird supports STARTTLS?
Last time I checked, your only option with Thunderbird is IMAP over SSL on
port 993. Thunderbird does not implement STARTTLS.
