I had this problem. It is a bug in vpopmail as far as I know.
Look through this list's archives.
When you compile courier-imap, do:
./configure --with-authvchkpw --without-authdaemon
Disabling authdaemon fixed my server.

Well, what I did, as someone earlier in this email list suggested, is
compile courier-imap like so:
./configure --without-authdaemon --with-authvchkpw
This solved my problem of having authentication fail randomly, until I
restarted the auth daemon.
I guess this is a confirmed bug.
