The whole point of backscatter suppression is to prevent the mail queue from
getting clogged up with mail to a nondeliverable recipient.

There's only one recipient address here, the alias address, and that's the
only address that can be suppressed.

Extrapolate this to the condition where
“f...@domain.com” is actually an alias for a few
dozen people, and where on any given day one of them happens to be over-
quota: it causes the entire alias to essentially constantly fail for
everyone.

This means that aliases should either not include unreliable mail
recipients, or backscatter suppression should be turned off (with all the
repercussions that brings) in the bofh file:

We’re seeing too many cases of users coming up against their quotas where

The only available option is to deliver a warning message, when the mailbox
reaches a certain percentage of the quota; the -w parameter to deliverquota,
the -q parameter to maildirmake.

[courier-users] 456 Address temporarily unavailable and aliases

2016-04-14 Thread Jeff Potter

Hi List,

What is the expected behavior for incoming email, when:
1) The address is an alias, say, f...@domain.com
, that expands to two local users, use...@domain.com
 and use...@domain.com
2) use...@domain.com’s account is over-quota

What we’re seeing is a "456 Address temporarily unavailable” message to mail
coming into the alias, meaning user-b doesn’t get the email, even though there
account isn’t over quota.

Extrapolate this to the condition where “f...@domain.com
” is actually an alias for a few dozen people, and
where on any given day one of them happens to be over-quota: it causes the
entire alias to essentially constantly fail for everyone.

Is there a way around this, while still using aliases? Or would it be better to
implement it as a .courier file (although that would be rather annoying for
other reasons).

Thanks,
Jeff--

On rpm based systems, the "alternatives" tool will be used to put
several links where they're expected:

/usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/sbin/sendmail mta
/usr/lib/courier/bin/sendmail 91 \
--slave /usr/bin/mailq mta-mailq /usr/lib/courier/bin/mailq \

Re: [courier-users] Best practice for SMTP level spam filter

2016-04-14 Thread Bernd Wurst
Thank you all for the answers.

To clarify: Bouncing spam would be an option, technically, but we do not
do that. For sure.

I do have some experience with a custom localmailfilter but my question
was if there's something ready to use laying around that I could not
find. Seems like my use case is too special, so i'll write a custom
localmailfilter.

maildrop currently supports hard quota and warning limit. they should be
enough in most cases...

[courier-users] Soft quotas for Maildir++?

Is there a way to create soft quotas with a grace period for quota limits on a

We’re seeing too many cases of users coming up against their quotas where we’d
like them to be able to go over for some period of time, before enforcing. As
for “why not just set the quota larger?”, we want the quota warnings and email
clients that display quota status to show the expected usage to based on the

what does "dig mx gmail.com" say?

the message looks like DNS problem resolving gmail.com, and when you have
problem resolving your domain, that looks like DNS error.

2016-04-14 Thread PICCORO McKAY Lenz
Sam means that the sendmail program must reside in /usr/sbin follow
some distro specific standar and not in another place like /usr/bin or
/sbin/ or similar..

i have same problem when compiling from sources (around the problem of
DNS that not working)

i got
vnxpos00:/etc/courier# testmxlookup intranet1.net.ve
Soft error.
vnxpos00:/etc/courier#

but i must move manually the sendmail to /usr/sbin due the installer
does not put there the binary

debian put some binaries in /usr/lib/courier and the user accesible
moved manually to /usr/sbin due installer does not are capable of that
using configure script

in fact that "revert" was a total reinstall of the linux box, but with
a little change in network, courier crap and got unusable!

i revised every config file, and set to real domain intranet1.net.ve
that are valid over network

1) DNS are working an valid on the internet, my provider are the best
ISP, Level 3 networks, see it, so DNS are not the problems:

vnxpos00:/home/lavka/Descargas# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 200.31.4.70

What to do to get sendmail in /usr/sbin?

You can use --exec-prefix=/usr/sbin to put all the binaries there.

But I don't know what "most other software" that is. sendmail is not a root-
only executable. It can be executed by non-root userids just fine.

[courier-users] ./configure option to install sendmail in /usr/sbin

2016-04-14 Thread courier
I am unpacking courier from the sources and use this command line:

  $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/courier

only that does not install sendmail in /usr/sbin where most other
software expects it to be.

What to do to get sendmail in /usr/sbin?

Hello,

Thank you Alessandro and Sam for tips. I did not have yet opportunity to

sendmail command is not smtpd and has different behaviour in some cases.

well, it's very hard to say why something did work. Maybe you could revert
to the previous state and check again? (just joking).
