[Coworking] Re: Best reads on community

2016-09-29 Thread Marko Orel
A while ago I published an academic article on bottom-up community building
(entitled Coworking: A community of work) and a study case of Creative
Centre Poligon, which has grown to the biggest coworking space and creative
centre in south-eastern Europe. I think it's listed on Ramon's website, but
you can also access it directly via Academia.edu

.

[Coworking] Coworking: A community of work / Article

2016-01-13 Thread Marko Orel

Greetings,

For the last couple of years, I’m dealing with research (as a PhD
candidate) on how relations between working individuals who use open
collaborative spaces in certain period of time are being formed via both
moderated and spontaneous networking processes. In the meantime, I managed
to open with the two other co-founders a coworking space and creative
centre (*Creative Centre Poligon* <http://www.poligon.si/en/>) in
Ljubljana, Slovenia (Europe) which has grown to one of the biggest in the
region (150 members & 250 events annually) with amazing community based on
values of sharing, collaborating and helping each other.

Anyhow, recently I have published an academic article (in co-authorship) -
we tried to examine the specific needs of the rising creative class,
identifying their urgent need for uninhibited sharing of information,
knowledge, ideas and material resources. In the article, we argue that
coworking spaces are favoured by the creative class, because they offer a
community of work which facilitates the culture of sharing. To illustrate
what it takes to establish such a community of work, we present a case
study of before mentioned Creative Centre Poligon which suggests that
community building is a multi-step process that needs careful management
and plenty of time.

If anybody out there is interested on how (creative) community can
co-create a coworking space and thus embodies a bottom-up process, I kindly
invite you to take a look at the *article*
<https://www.academia.edu/20097931/Coworking_A_community_of_work> and share
your thoughts with me.

Best,

Marko Orel

Co-founder

Creative Centre Poligon

[Coworking] Re: Amazing article about the impact of leadership on community

2014-07-04 Thread Marko Orel
As it goes for me (I'm the co-founder of Creative Centre Poligon, coworking
space in Ljubljana, Slovenia), I think the community manager (and therefore
informal leader as the article states) needs to be present in space
everyday (at all times) and be actively involved in community, i.e. talk
with members, organize community lunches, gather them for informal
meetings, etc. Basically, manager needs to (with his/hers presence)
transform the space into something that is between home and office - it's
all about establishing trust factor (which - as Elodie puts it - allows
members to identify other members as ''roommates'') inside the space, which
you can achieve not only by managing the community but also by setting the
space right (i.e. self-service bar, fridge with shared food, etc.).

We have opened our space five months ago and have now almost 70 members up
to present day. Most of them stay inside the space from morning till night
and according to recent survey we made amongst them, they say that they see
Poligon not only as working ground/shared office space, but also as a
place, where they enjoy spending their time. And when you establish this
kind of conditions in your space, spontaneous networking between themselves
goes sky high and amazing projects start to arise. But that's another story.

This article makes me think. What are the abilities of a good leader in a
coworking space? In my case I know people like to hang here because I am a
positive and smily person I am also very accesible and help them with any
thing they need. Sometimes it even becomes a kind of
 coaching-coworking. What about you guys?

If you somehow haven't checked out New Worker Magazine yet, you need to.
It's the best best best thing to happen to coworking in a long time.

My favorite story this month (the 2nd edition) includes a story written
by a member of Les Satellites, a coworking space in Nice, France.

 http://newworker.co/mag/coworking-impact-leadership-community/

She talks about joining a coworking space that was managed before
joining one that was led, and the effect/impact of her desire to stick
 around.

 A++ recommend reading RIGHT NOW.

 Have an awesome weekend :)
