The announcement by the BBC's director of news, Richard Sambrook, cast doubt on the network's credibility, because Dr. Kelly had told a parliamentary committee two days before his death that he had not provided the report's central contention - that the government had sexed up a government intelligence dossier by incorporating a claim that Saddam Hussein had chemical and biological weapons that could be deployed in 45 minutes. The announcement further undermined the authority of the hotly contested report in that Dr. Kelly, 59, a former United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq and an adviser to the Ministry of Defense, was not a senior intelligence official involved in preparing the dossier, as the network had called its anonymous source. The original report, broadcast on May 29, was particularly damaging to the government, which is fighting charges that it manipulated intelligence information to justify an unpopular war. At the time, government officials vehemently denied the report, pressed the network for its source and repeatedly demanded a retraction and an apology. The BBC said it stood behind its reporting and demanded its own apology for the government's assertion that the broadcaster's news programming followed an agenda against the war. Dr. Kelly became involved in the dispute after telling his Defense Ministry managers that he had met with the BBC correspondent a week before the report was broadcast. His name was then leaked to newspapers, and he was brought before a House of Commons foreign affairs committee, which subjected him last Tuesday to a round of bruising questions and name-calling. His family and friends have speculated that the bullying treatment overwhelmed the scientist, a soft-spoken man accustomed to working behind the scenes. In one e-mail message he sent hours before his death, he said that if things returned to normal, he would return to Baghdad by the end of the month. In another, sent to a reporter for The New York Times, Judith Miller, he discussed how his testimony had gone: I will wait until the end of the week before judging - many dark actors playing games. The police found Dr. Kelly's body on Friday in a wooded area five miles from his Oxfordshire home, his left wrist slashed and a package of painkillers nearby. Mr. Blair has called for an immediate judicial inquiry into the suicide. Today, during a visit to South Korea, he said that he himself would testify. For the BBC, the publicly financed network that sees itself as the world leader in balanced broadcast reporting and analysis, the highly charged case comes at an awkward time. The corporation was already under attack from critics who said it had not been impartial in its coverage of the war in Iraq and the conflict in the Middle East. In addition to its continuing fight with the government at home, it is derided by right-wing commentators in the United States as the Baghdad Broadcasting Corporation, and in Israel its correspondents have been officially shunned by the government of Ariel Sharon. In an appearance before a committee of Parliament last week to discuss the network's annual report, BBC chiefs faced charges of partiality. One Labor member of the panel, Rosemary McKenna, said the network had ceased to differentiate between straightforward news and editorial comment. Gavyn Davies, the corporation's chairman, said he was disturbed by the spate of allegations, and he assured the lawmakers, We are going to look further at whether we can ensure audience perceptions of impartiality, something we already do, but we want to do more. Mr. Davies conceded that there were some individual errors along the way, but said that research showed the BBC to be the most trusted information source in Britain. BBC audience figures in the United States are rising, but BBC news correspondents are more aggressive and contrarian in their interviewing techniques than their American counterparts, a characteristic that can expose them to charges of taking sides among people who are accustomed to the media taking a less hectoring approach to public figures. BBC officials have responded to the criticism about their war coverage by saying they are appealing to an international audience that demands a perspective from both sides.

BBC News is usually that way. It is there to cover the news but now is in the middle of it. While I was in London last week, I got somewhat of an insider look at an emerging battle royale between Britain's best-known broadcaster and its embattled political leaders. What's at stake is as troubling as what is happening in America vis-à-vis the FCC, and not as well known. Your News Dissector is still investigating and shares a first in-depth report, hoping for comment and debate. THE BBC's NEXT WAR Why the Knives Are Out for Aunty LONDON: Politics here has become sport. And drama. Call it the Blair follies. Call it a lynching party. But don't call it boring. There is a daily dance underway between a probing media that seemed to have lost its spine in the fog of war only to find it in all the discrepancies in official pronouncements about missing weapons of mass destruction, and a public that grows more skeptical by the day. Meanwhile the government gets squirmier and testier by the hour, insisting it was right all along and that the media, especially the BBC, has got it wrong, wrong, wrong. Many believe that this trashing of the BBC emanates from the pique of a disgruntled politician like Blair's media advisor Alistair Campbell, or is meant only to shift attention away from the WMD controversy. The Times of London calls it a weapon of mass distraction. It isn't. The Iraq War may be over but the BBC is in the crosshairs of a new low intensity war. Most of the British press has yet to realize that this new battle of Britain is more than a case of shoot the messenger. If the BBC's credibility can be seriously damaged, its global power ands political impact can be circumscribed. So far most of the media coverage of this latest controversy is focused on the issues in the foreground, not the interests in the background. There is more at stake. WHY THE ATTACKS ON THE BBC? A week ago, a study came out from Cardiff University that found that the BBC, contrary to the impressions of some (especially those in the US who compared its war coverage with what passed for journalism on the tube here) was NOT in the bulk of its coverage anti-war but, rather, pro-government and tilted towards the war. That shouldn't surprise. Led by its effective manager Greg Dyke, a partisan of the New Labor movement headed by Blair, the BEEB is a vast corporation that usually functions as a member of the establishment in good standing. The BBC rarely goes to war against the government of the day. Despite the evidence in the new study, conservatives, as well as I am told on good authority, Labor politicians and elements of the British military, charge that the BBC was anti-war, hostile to the British forces, and one-sided. They seem determined to do something about it. While the opening shots in their attack are being pegged to a current issue, there is a longer-term strategy behind it that does not seem well understood. Like many conflicts, this one began with a news story and an incident. But that may only be a pretext for a more insidious strategy. THE CONFRONTATION BEGINS History, deceit and small-mindedness in high places has now cast the Beeb (or Aunty as it is known), the world's most respected and self-important broadcaster) into an adversarial role. The government's spinner-in-chief Alistair Campbell, (Tony wouldn't know what to do without me, he is quoted as saying) is accusing BBC of bias in general and falsely alleging that he was involved in sexing up a dossier that was used to justify and sell British involvement in the war. He demanded a retraction and apology. At issue is a report by BBC defense correspondent Andrew Gilligan who had a high-placed source confirming that information in the renamed dodgy dossier justifying the war had been doctored. The government, which denies the charge, demands to know Gilligan's source and insists in any event that one source should never a story make. A parliamentary committee has been grilling Gilligan, demanding he fess up. The BBC responds by standing by the story, and says that there would be no political journalism in the country if every story had to be based on several sources. The BBC says it believes their source was credible and could be trusted. A top BBC official told me he will not under any circumstance reveal his source. We don't do that, he said firmly. Others point out that many of Blair's claims in the dossier in dispute were only based on one source, if any. Just last night, July 18, 2003, Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard, a regular FOX commentator, called for US troops in Iraq to make war on Iran for the purpose of regime change, and asserted that he would support a TAX INCREASE to make war on Iran and Syria (Jewish Supremist Kristol is, of course, delivering the Jewish Supremist party line, courtesy of FOX Cable News). Now here are lines from the below article, with my comments following Item: The prime minister's (ed: Ariel Sharon's) office is prohibiting government aides, spokesmen and Cabinet ministers from being interviewed on the BBC. Comment: Time honored tactic when Jewish Supremists get their hands around the throat of a nation. President Dwight Eisenhower, whose caption in the 1915 Army yearbook was the terrible Swedish Jew, employed exactly this tactic against the valiant anti-communist investigations of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Eisenhower forbid all federal government officials to respond to subpoenas from McCarthy's committee. Comment: Yes, this is exactly what I ran into while we were trying to run our radio ads on WLW and WKRC last October - every manner of petty obstruction. Shortly before Kelly's death, Julian Borger, writing in the Guardian, brought to light the existence of a network of some very dark actors a faction of the British and American intelligence agencies that almost certainly was about to be exposed as the source of the disinformation put out by the Bush-Blair coalition of deceit. In the period leading up to the invasion, as millions marched in the streets hoping to stop the rush to war, Newt Gingrich, the disgraced former Speaker of the House, made at least three trips to CIA headquarters, in Langley, Virginia, to browbeat analysts into projecting a more threatening picture of Iraq's military capabilities. But why, one has to ask, would anyone bother listening to a political has-been and well-known bore? Surely the CIA brass had better things to do. "Mr Gingrich gained access to the CIA headquarters and was listened to," reports Borger, "because he was seen as a personal emissary of the Pentagon and, in particular, of the OSP." The key link in an international chain of professional prevaricators, the OSP, or Office of Special Plans, was authorized by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and presided over by a cabal of neoconservative ideologues who "functioned like a shadow government," according to Borger. Bypassing both the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency, they "cherry-picked" tidbits of raw intelligence, acting more like lawyers arguing a case than analysts probing for facts, and piped their propaganda directly to the President via Dick Cheney. This story is nothing new: Seymour Hersh gave us a good look inside this network, and several writers have elaborated on a similar theme, but Borger provides some telling (and disturbing) new details: "The OSP itself had less than 10 full-time staff, so to help deal with the load, the office hired scores of temporary 'consultants.' They included lawyers, congressional staffers, and policy wonks from the numerous rightwing thinktanks in Washington. Few had experience in intelligence. 'Most of the people they had in that office were off the books, on personal services contracts. At one time, there were over 100 of them,' said an intelligence source. The contracts allow a department to hire individuals, without specifying a job description." This was, in effect, a welfare program for warmongers. In the great debate leading up to the war, one side was subsidized and succored by our tax dollars, the other was vilified, threatened, and harassed by paid shills and agents of the U.S. government. The news from Iraq is not good. Each day brings new attacks on U.S. troops. As many Americans have now died since Saddam's statue fell from its Baghdad pedestal as perished in the war. Gen. John Abizaid, who replaced Tommy Franks, has contradicted Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld to declare that Iraqis are now engaged in a "classical guerrilla-type campaign against us." Franks thought the U.S. Army would be in Iraq two to four years at least. Gen. Barry McCaffrey predicts five to 10 years to pacify and democratize the country. Rumsfeld says the cost of occupying and rebuilding Iraq is now $4 billion a month. Yet, it is hard to recall a 20th-century guerrilla war that did not last longer or cost more than projected. And lest we forget, most of these wars were lost. The French lost in Indochina and Algeria, the Americans in Vietnam, the Israelis in Lebanon. Western nations prevailed when they aligned themselves with nationalists and were able to deny guerrillas a privileged sanctuary in a neighboring country. Thus, the Brits prevailed in Malaya, and Americans aided the Greeks in defeating communist rebels and Filipinos in defeating the Huks. In Nicaragua, Angola and Afghanistan, Reagan turned the tables on Moscow by aligning the United States with nationalists fighting to dump over odious Marxist client regimes of the Soviet Empire. But the omens are not good in Iraq. The morale of U.S. troops, who were told "the road home lies through Baghdad," is sinking, as is support for the president, as Americans realize the fighting and dying have only just begun. The initiative has passed to the enemy. He chooses the time and place of attack, he has the element of surprise. And the presence of a U.S. army of 150,000 occupying an Arab country is a lure to every Muslim who hates us to slip over the border and kill Americans without having to face the firepower of U.S. fleets and planes. Another problem the president faces is that we are running out of army. With U.S. active duty forces down to half what Ronald Reagan left us in 1989, we have troop deployments and treaty commitments President Reagan never had to honor. Packets of U.S. forces are now not only in Germany, South Korea and Japan, but Colombia, the Philippines, Eastern Europe, Bosnia, Kosovo, the former Soviet republics of Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Gulf. U.S. troops are being requested for Liberia. And with a guerrilla war now being waged in Iraq, two other axis-of-evil nations, Iran and North Korea, are driving for nuclear weapons. Confrontation, even conflict, with either cannot be ruled out of Pentagon plans. America is now approaching the imperial overstretch toward which we have been lunging and stumbling since the Cold War. For 10 years, the "jodpurs-and-pith-helmets" jingo crowd at the little magazines has been beating the drum to drive us toward this cataract. Now, we are there, the United States is facing what Walter Lippmann called "foreign-policy bankruptcy." A foreign policy is bankrupt when a nation's strategic assets its forces and alliances are insufficient to cover its liabilities, what it has committed to defend. U.S. foreign-policy bankruptcy was reached before Pearl Harbor, when Franklin Roosevelt was issuing ultimata to Japan without the naval power to defend the Philippines and any other island possessions in the far Pacific. So, our notes were called, we had insufficient funds to cover them, and the war came. Foreign policy bankruptcy is a condition that invites a run on the bank by a nation's enemies and adversaries. So today, we see axis-of-evil nations defying the Bush Doctrine and driving toward nuclear weapons, Iraqis rising up to expel us, Muslim fanatics slipping into Iraq to attack our soldiers, and alienated allies sitting back and relishing watching the "American hyper-power" thrash about. As our reserves are being called up, not only is our active duty U.S. military stretched thin. Our budget deficit is $455 billion and rising, our trade deficit is $500 billion and rising, our dollar has fallen 25 percent against the euro. In ruthless candor, President Bush does not have the surplus of resources military, strategic, financial, political to hold the empire. As some of us predicted a decade ago, the compulsive interventionism of the Bushites must lead to imperial overstretch. Something has to give. It is going to be the empire. We are at or close to high tide now. From here on, it begins to recede. Either President Bush starts discarding imperial responsibilities we cannot carry, and bringing the troops home, or his successor will.

Iraq weapons expert Dr David Kelly reportedly warned of "many dark actors playing games" in an e-mail sent hours before he bled to death from a slashed wrist. The message, sent to a journalist, appeared to refer to officials within the Ministry of Defence and British intelligence agencies with whom he had sparred over interpretations of weapons reports, according to the New York Times. But his e-mail gave no indication he was depressed and said he was waiting "until the end of the week" before judging how his appearance before the committee had gone, the newspaper said. How Gingrich Berserkers Seized Democratic Party by Anton Chaitkin When Ted Kennedy warned in January 1995 that America doesn't need two Republican Parties, he had the problem inside out. Evidence newly appearing confirms that a single gang, the hyper-New Age fascists around Newt Gingrich and Alvin Toffler, was then strangling Republicans and Democrats, while sweeping aside the traditionalists in both parties. This is the war-crazy faction which has recently been running Bush policy through the Vice Presidency and the Pentagon, and, acting through the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), sabotaging and silencing the Democratic Party of Franklin Roosevelt. When the 'New Paradigm' Was Born The gang's blatant inter-party arrangement emerged in 1990, when the DLC teamed up with the radical rightists who were then fighting a bruising battle for control of the first Bush Administration. DLC strategist Elaine Kamarck, and her friend James Pinkerton, aide to President George H.W. Bush, established the "New Paradigm Society" to coordinate between right-wing Democrats and Gingrichites. Kamarck reportedly had met Pinkerton at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, where she was a Democratic Party advisor. Pinkerton soon afterward made his mark working for the senior Bush's Presidential campaign versus the Democratic nominee, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis. Pinkerton did the research for the Republicans' famous racist attacks on the theme of Willie Horton, an African-American convict, who allegedly committed a murder after being paroled by Dukakis. Pinkerton became domestic policy advisor for the Bush Administration; Kamarck went on the staff of the Democratic Leadership Council. Around February 1990, Kamarck and Pinkerton set in motion their New Paradigm Society, which was to run for the next two years. They met regularly with Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), DLC officers, and others to promote lower wages, privatization, deregulation, globalist free trade, the post-industrial "New Economy," and the neo-conservatives' global war agenda. Among those associated with this behind-the-scenes initiative were Connecticut Democrat Joe Lieberman, whose first election to the Senate had just been sponsored by William F. Buckley and funded by the most right-wing Cuban exile leadership in Florida. Pinkerton outlined his "New Paradigm" in an April 1990 speech to the rightist Reason Foundation in Santa Monica, California, and in another talk to the Gingrich/Toffler World Future Society. His radical smash-the-poor, dismantle-the-government program was clothed in caring rhetoric, allowing for gay rights, speculator rights, etc. Battle in the 'Grand Old Party' Some more mainstream Republicans soon declared war against Pinkerton's New Paradigm. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Richard Darman spoke out on Nov. 16, 1990, denouncing the trend of "neo-neo-ism" and "neo-Newtism." He called the New Paradigm "a bit too pretentious for a would-be populist movement." Less than two weeks later, on Nov. 29, 1990, Congressman Gingrich demanded that Darman resign, calling him a "Republican Dukakis." The factional brawl dominated Washington political headlines. On the right, Pinkerton, Gingrich, Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott, and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jack Kemp fought the centrists, led by OMB Director Darman and White House Chief of Staff John Sununu, who were trying to keep the first Bush Administration from becoming a utopian fascist nightmare. Meanwhile, the allied "DLC moles" continued undermining the Democratic Party. The Bush Administration has misread Kim Jong-il almost completely--I think. If they do understand what he is up to, they show no sign of it in public. Even so, in light of recent developments, Kim Jong-il must make his move in the next few weeks or he will be at an extreme disadvantage. President Roh has made the best of a bad situation, unfortunately, his thinking has been as short-ranged as Kim Jong-il's. I have tried very hard to make this clear and failed, but I will relate it to you in hopes that you will relay it to others who might be able to influence the coming turn of events. The United States cannot and will not tolerate a nuclear armed DPRK. It's just that simple. The US will NOT tolerate it. If anyone thinks that the US will tolerate a unified Korea that is also a nuclear power, but is being ruled by the Kim Dynasty, either publicly or behind the scenes, they are making a very poor assessment of the situation. The United States will NOT tolerate a nuclear armed DPRK. Do try to understand this. This sentiment runs across the entire political spectrum in the United States. Kim Jong-il stands a very good chance of achieving his goals, if he is about to do what I think he is. He cannot win a war with the United States. He knows that. His goal then, is to drive a wedge between the US and its Asian allies. He cannot separate the United States and Japan via political means the way he as the US and the ROK. Force is required for that job and with nuclear warheads at his disposal, he very clearly has the means. If he can achieve this, he can put Hu Jintao in a position of having no choice but to support Pyongyang against the US. This will result in an immediate victory over the United States without having to continue the war with the United States. How can he do this? Simple. He tests a nuclear warhead somewhere in the Sea of Japan and then announces that he has a weapon of the same exact type as the one just tested somewhere in Japan. Finding a concealed nuclear weapon is no mean feat. The Japanese would not cooperate with the US in a conflict with the DPRK until the warhead was found--and may not ever cooperate in such a conflict at all in the future. The Japanese are very much inclined to settle things through negotiation as we all know very well. Despite the outrageous claims being made by KCNA, the Japanese are about as likely to start a war as my three year old grandson. They are going to be even less inclined to fight if they are confronted with the possibility of being nuked again. This would buy Kim the time and leverage he needs to negotiate the unification treaty he wants with President Roh. It also gives him enormous leverage over the Japanese and he would likely get the Reparations Settlement he wants from the Japanese. The US would have no choice but to sit on its hands throughout this entire ordeal. Here is the long range problem and it is inescapable. Sooner or later, the United States would attack Korea anyway. This time though, the South would be as much the enemy as the North has been. This war will NOT be a ground war. The United States will NOT worry about civilian casualties in Korea the way it did in Iraq. The situation in Korea is different in several key respects, as I think you already know. The cost of preserving civilian lives in this war would be entirely unsupportable for the US. My guess is that we would simply nuke Korea flat and be done with it. At best, assuming Kim did nothing too terribly provocative after unification, Korea will survive another twenty years after a forced reunification. I don't think Kim is bright enough to realize that the greater his successes against us, the more horrifying the eventual payback will be. I don't think he would sit on his hands after a forced Unification. I think he would do something to trigger a response from the United States and that response would be sudden, swift and completely fatal. So what is the cure to the immediate problem? There are no good ones. My guess is that the Bush Administration is about to conclude that the ouster of the Kim Dynasty is now necessary, if it has not already reached such a conclusion, and will proceed with that goal in mind. This is why I suggested that Kim must move quickly if he is going to save himself and his country. A dramatic diplomatic turn on Pyongyang's part in the next couple of weeks could save the day. Barring that, the destruction of the DPRK, or the whole of Korea becomes immanent. Beijing could have in the past and could at any time put a stop to this entire thing, but I do not anticipate that they will act. I'm sure that Hu Jintao regards the Kim Dynasty as a thorn in his foot and would be happy to help the US deal with him, but the older heads in China are licking their

The information I have is Thornhill is one of the prime targets of Jews for Jesus for their campaign, said Canadian Jewish Congress executive director Bernie Farber, who accuses the organization of using trickery and deception to convert vulnerable Jews to Christianity. Jews for Jesus is trying to destroy us spiritually, he said. Mr. Farber is trying to set up a meeting with York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge to ensure there is no violence between the new groups when Jews for Jesus launches a massive evangelical campaign next month in the Greater Toronto Area and in other cities around the world. He said there were near riots when a new religious organization called City of David Messianic Synagogue in Thornhill promoted a similar message six years ago. This has the potential to be worse, said Mr. Farber, who believes Jews for Jesus will target Russian Jews who recently arrived in the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue area. Jews for Jesus Canadian director Andrew Barron says his members are both Christians and Jews trying to bring their belief Jesus is the Messiah to Jewish communities. What I'm trying to say is, if Jesus is the Messiah, the most obvious thing, as a Jew, you can do is believe in him, said Mr. Barron, who pointed out Jesus and his early followers were Jewish. But Rabbi Michael Skobac, of Thornhill's Jews for Judaism, insists the Christian and Jewish religions are diametrically opposed on the issue of whether Jesus is the Saviour and for an organization to tell Jews they can believe the Christian message and still retain their Jewish religion is deceitful. While he said he doesn't object to Christians spreading the word of Jesus, he's angry Jews for Jesus tells Jews they can believe Jesus is the Messiah while still remaining Jewish. Mr. Farber is also upset churches in the Greater Toronto Area are ignoring or turning their backs on the congress's plea to condemn the tactics of Jews for Jesus. For example, Pastor Kel Trudgian of Grace Church in Newmarket wrote a letter to the congress insisting Jews for Jesus has every right to promote its message. I find your letter castigating Jews for Jesus offensive and a direct threat to the natural law of freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom of religion, he stated in his letter. The Jewish community is made of mature, intelligent individuals who are committed to their God and faith. They make good and right choices every day.
