After eight days in which Iraqi fighters have scored a series of major blows to the coalition and its Iraqi allies, intelligence and military officials in Iraq and on both sides of the Atlantic are at odds over whether they are fighting a Saddam-led movement or a series of disparate partisan groups. They are just as divided on finding a way to halt the escalating violence. The latest violence comes amid increasingly bleak assessments from Washington, where the latest attacks have been compared in the media to Vietnam's 1968 Tet Offensive against US forces and described by Sandy Berger, a former National Security Adviser to President Bill Clinton, as a 'classic guerrilla war'. The comments follow leaked assessments by both the US pro-consul in Iraq, Ambassador Paul Bremer, and US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that war against the resistance was going less well than planned, with the latter describing a 'long, hard slog'. By last week that long, hard slog had seen attacks on coalition forces and the Iraqis co-operating with them reaching a level of 33 a day - more than twice the level in July. Anti-coalition fighters have ratcheted up the scale of attacks on schools, police and politicians, while assaults on the US-led forces have become more confident and sophisticated. US and UK officials admit that at the centre of the worsening crisis - which has seen the UN and other aid agencies withdraw international staff from the country following the bombing of the Red Cross headquarters in Baghdad - is a continuing failure of hard intelligence on exactly who is behind the resistance. The urgency of the problem was underlined by comments by a former CIA director last week that unless the coalition forces get a grip on the intelligence-gathering problem - in particular building relationships with ordinary Iraqis - it may be too late. 'We're at a crossroads,' Stansfield Turner, told the Christian Science Monitor. 'If in the next few weeks we don't persuade the Iraqi on the street that we're going to straighten things out... we won't get that intelligence.' A mark of that failure, say officials, has been the inability of coalition forces and the intelligence and policing agencies available to them to solve any of the major bombings that began in August. 'The fundamental issue with counter-insurgency warfare is intelligence. Intelligence is what matters and it is 90 per cent of the battle,' Gordon Adams, a former associate director for national security, told the New York Times. 'It's knowing who they are, where they are and when they act. If we know anything from Vietnam and the various things that have gone on in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is that our humint [human intelligence] is terrible. We know that we were woefully under-prepared in general.' It is a view shared in part by British officials, who concede that attempts to infiltrate the resistance have been without success. Others are sharply critical of how the intelligence war against the rebels has been handled. They point to a woeful shortage of Arab linguists and analysts familiar with Arab culture in the US-run sector, despite being six months into the insurgency. To counter this, Pentagon officials briefed last week that some of these specialists working among the 1,400-strong Iraq Survey Group on the unsuccessful search for stockpiles of unconventional weapons would be transferred to this effort. So who exactly is the resistance? In recent days American officials have briefed US papers for the first time that Saddam Hussein may be playing a significant role in co-ordinating and directing attacks by his loyalists, despite conceding such reports could not be corroborated. The claims are based in part on reports that Saddam met Izzat Ibrahim, a senior Iraqi general suspected by American officials of playing a significant role in organising the resistance and co-ordinating with Ansar al-Islam, linked to al Qaeda. The depiction by these Pentagon officials of the structure of the resistance - though tentatively expressed - suggest a hierarchical organisation, led by former Saddam officials, with Saddam at its head, and allied to groups of foreign jihadists and al Qaeda under a single

Now Bush is likely to face intense scrutiny. The book, The Faith of George W. Bush, was written by Christian author Stephen Mansfield. It details numerous incidents where Bush's faith has been shown to be at the centre of his political thinking. Among Mansfield's revelations is his insistence that Bush and Tony Blair have prayed together at a private meeting at Camp David. Blair has previously denied this. Mansfield, however, says that, while there were no witnesses, aides were left in little doubt as to what had happened. He told The Observer: 'There is no question they have shared scripture and prayed together.' The book also shows that in the lead-up to announcing his candidacy for the presidency, Bush told a Texan evangelist that he had had a premonition of some form of national disaster happening. Bush said to James Robinson: 'I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can't explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen... I know it won't be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.' Three individuals were seen celebrating in Liberty State Park after the impact. They said three people were jumping up and down. By 4pm on the afternoon of September 11, the van was spotted near New Jerseys Giants stadium. A squad car pulled it over and inside were five men in their 20s. They were hustled out of the car with guns levelled at their heads and handcuffed. In the car was $4700 in cash, a couple of foreign passports and a pair of box cutters the concealed Stanley Knife-type blades used by the 19 hijackers whod flown jetliners into the World Trade Centre and Pentagon just hours before. There were also fresh pictures of the men standing with the smouldering wreckage of the Twin Towers in the background. One image showed a hand flicking a lighter in front of the devastated buildings, like a fan at a pop concert. The driver of the van then told the arresting officers: We are Israeli. After each harvest, he puts some seed aside. "Every farmer that ever farmed has saved some of his seed to plant again," he said. In 1998, Mr. McFarling bought 1,000 bags of genetically altered soybean seeds, and he did what he had always done. But the seeds, called Roundup Ready, are patented. When Monsanto, which holds the patent, learned what Mr. McFarling had sown, it sued him in federal court in St. Louis for patent infringement and was awarded $780,000. The company calls the planting of saved seed piracy, and it says it has won millions of dollars from farmers in lawsuits and settlements in such cases. Mr. McFarling's is the first to reach a federal appeals court, which will consider how the law should reconcile patented food with a practice as old as farming itself. If the appeals court rules against him, said Mr. McFarling, 61, he will be forced into bankruptcy and early retirement. "It doesn't look right for them to have a patent on something that you can grow yourself," he said. Janice Armstrong, a Monsanto spokeswoman, said the company invested hundreds of millions of dollars to develop the seed. "We need to protect our intellectual property so that we can continue to develop the next wave of products," she said. Were farmers allowed to replant the seed, the company said in its appeals court brief, "Monsanto would effectively, and rapidly, lose control of its rights." That is because one bag of the patented seed can produce about 36 bags of seed for use in the next growing season. The number grows exponentially. By the third season, the single bag of seed could generate almost 50,000 bags. Ms. Armstrong said that there are about 300,000 soybean farmers in the United States, and that Monsanto has disputes with only about 100 of them a year. Most disputes are resolved quickly and informally, she said. Farmers here said the company's efforts to investigate the replanting of saved seeds have been intrusive, divisive and heavy-handed. "They hired the whole city of Tupelo's night police force," said Mitchell Scruggs, 54, who is a defendant in another saved-seed lawsuit. "They bought a lot across the street from me for surveillance. They're spending all this money on airplanes, helicopters, detectives, lawyers." "They told a federal judge that it wasn't a monetary issue," Mr. Scruggs said over the roar of three cotton gins at his farm here. "They wanted to make an example of me. They want to destroy me to show others what could happen to them." In this respect, the seed lawsuits resemble the record industry's actions against people who share music files on the Internet. There, too, the goal is not primarily to recover money from particular defendants but to educate the public, and perhaps to scare other potential offenders. Ms. Armstrong acknowledges that Monsanto must walk a fine line. "These people are our customers," she said, "and we do value them. But we also have to protect our intellectual property rights." Legal experts say Monsanto is likely to win its appeal, in part because Mr. McFarling signed a standard contract when he bought the seed. He said he did not read the contract at the time and it had never occurred to him, until Monsanto contacted him with a $135,000 settlement offer, that he had done anything unlawful. It is very possible that the Israelis knew of the impending disaster but were unable to get the information into hands that could take action against it. It's a pity that the Israelis don't trust the US and feel the need to do their own surveillance, but many in this country don't trust our government either. My guess is that the US has moles in many country including Israel.Those of us who read these message boards across the net are like archeologists who are picking thru the remains to try and understand what is happening in the culture at levels that are not open to us. This doesn't strike me as the statement of someone who favors free speech over promotion of their own ideology at any cost, including the detriment of others' rights. You don't have to prove yourself to me, but you have yet to clarify this statement; it seems you're backtracking a bit, which is probably a good thing. Perhaps you have me confused with the left, but in any case I don't play for any team. I am nearly an absolutist when it comes to free speech, however. But I must mention that certain activities promoted by some activist groups as free speech can also be classified as harrassment, and this is especially bothersome when someone with no interest in the debate is targeted. I don't really have any sympathy for people who engage in such activities. purpose lies in fighting the Jews. "No War for Israel" (NoWarforIsrael.com), the
love child of Breeding and recently incarcerated Klansman David Duke,
demonstrates the disturbing continuity and convergence of neo-Nazis, Islamists
and the anti-war movement.Resume of HateIn his mid-30s, Breeding
already has an impressive resume for the hate movement. As a Tampa-based
regional organizer for National Alliance, the hate group whose leader's writings
inspired Timothy McVeigh,1 Breeding helped bring Holocaust denier David Irving
to the United States. When David Duke unsuccessfully sought the seat of
disgraced Speaker of the House Bob Livingston, Breeding joined Duke's staff and
has been with him ever since. In 1999, he launched the Nationalist News Service,

White. NNA operated as part of Stormfront.org, the leading racist propaganda
clearinghouse on the internet.2 Breeding's most recent gig, under the pseudonym
"Vince Edwards," was running EURO (European Unity and Rights Organization),

later concealed from the IRS.3 In this capacity, Breeding administered the
Duke-owned website "MartinLutherKing.org," a website that defames the slain
civil rights leader's memory. Nazis for PeaceDavid Duke
tried to reinvigorate his career by seeking to capitalize on the "peace"
movement's momentum with a anti-war speech in Virginia. As a preparation for the
speech, Duke, noting the Left's penchant for gathering unverified information
from "alternate media" sources, commissioned Breeding to launch "No War for
Israel" on February 5. Its few original articles (just six in all) offer red
meat to die-hard leftists. For one thing, MLK Jr. aside, they share a common
hagiography. Breeding prominently features an angelic picture of Rachel Corrie,
with a link to her diary entries. The photo's caption: "Martyr for Peace."4
The contribution of "Brigadier General" James J. Martin, a longtime
Holocaust denier associated with the Institute for Historical Review,5 amounts
to little more than a familiar litany of leftist talking points, in which he
rattles off 30 Chomskyite charges against the state of Israel, such as:
"Q.What country in the Middle East refuses to pay compensation to people
whose land, bank accounts and businesses it confiscated?"A.
Israel."Q. What country in the Middle East seized the sovereign
territory of other nations by military force and continues to occupy it in
defiance of United Nations Security Council Resolutions?"A.
Israel."The website also lists the UN's resolutions condemning Israel
(all of them non-binding, incidentally). This moral equivalence - or in many
cases, condoning of Islamist violence - is the Left's stock-in-trade, here
appropriated without alteration by the hate-filled fringe.Both an
article by Anver Suliman of the Pretoria-based Islamist website Media Review
Network and an anonymous article on the site claim the forces behind the war are
- surprise! - Jews. Suliman bases his "analysis" on statements by The Nation
Jason Vest, Chris Matthews and Pat Buchanan that "George Bush has become a
'client' of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon." The anonymous article
cites the supposedly disproportionate influence of "pro-Israeli Jewish
lobbyists" within the Cabinet. This pathetic piece, which still lists White
House persona non grata David Frum as a Bush speechwriter, apparently sees
mischief springing from the perfidious Jewish influence of such "top" advisers
as Brad Blakeman (White House Director of Scheduling) and Christopher Gersten
(Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Administration for Children and
Families at the Department of Health and Human Services). Everyone's favorite
Jew - Colin Powell - is also listed among the worthies. The author goes on to
claim "the Israeli lobby" created the Monica Lewinsky scandal "to force
(Clinton) to launch 'Operation Desert Fox,' in December 1998"! Even the
title of the lone remaining article, "The Oil Racket and Greater Israel,"
recalls the peaceniks' mantra "No Blood for Oil!" Author "Eduardo S.B." declares
"the truth behind this war campaign has everything to do with the ideal for a
greater
