Hours after large explosions shook the center of Baghdad near U.S. headquarters, the visiting British foreign secretary said Iraq will be a safer place once the U.S.- and British-led coalition hands over power to an Iraqi government. Troops of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division in Samarra, 70 miles north of Baghdad, arrested the wife and daughter of Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, a top Saddam associate, division spokesman Lt. Col. William MacDonald said Wednesday. Under Saddam, al-Douri was vice chairman of the ruling Revolutionary Command Council, and shortly before the war began March 20, Saddam placed him in charge of defenses in northern Iraq. U.S. officials have said they believe al-Douri has planned some of the attacks against U.S. forces, and last week offered a $10 million reward for information leading to his capture. Al-Douri is No. 6 on the list of 55 most-wanted Iraqis. MacDonald said a man he identified as the son of a physician was also taken into custody in the raid Tuesday. He had no further information about the man. In London, the former chief of Iraq's interim administration, retired Lt. Gen. Jay Garner, said in an interview broadcast Wednesday on British Broadcasting Corp. radio that the U.S.-led coalition made mistakes after it took control of Baghdad. Garner, who was replaced by L. Paul Bremer after less than a month in the job, said he could have done better at communicating with the Iraqi people. He also said the coalition should have moved more quickly to establish a government in Iraq and put more troops in Baghdad, including more infantry. ``If we did it over again, we probably would have put more dismounted infantrymen in Baghdad and maybe more troops there,'' Garner said, when asked what the biggest mistakes of the occupation had been. Witnesses near the village of Sharqat, 170 miles north of Baghdad, said sheets of flame and thick black smoke were shooting from the damaged pipeline, only 30 miles from Iraq's largest oil refinery. There was no immediate explanation for the cause of the blaze, but guerrillas have repeatedly attacked pipelines in the general area. The attacks have complicated efforts to revive Iraq's giant petroleum industry, the key to its economic recovery. Iraq has the second-largest proven petroleum reserves in OPEC. But many companies are holding back until they see an improvement in security against attacks by militants opposed to American troops and the U.S.-backed Iraqi Governing Council. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, on a two-day visit to Iraq, said a political transition to Iraqi rule will improve the security situation. More than five dozen U.S. troops have been killed by hostile fire in November, more than any other month since the official end of major combat in Iraq on May 1. ``I'm absolutely sure that a more rapid political process will assist the security situation,'' Straw said at a news conference. ``The more that we can give all Iraqis a stake in their future and a stable political architecture in which to work, the more I believe more Iraqis will become committed to that future and fewer will think that terror and quiescence in terror is the way forward.'' Straw said he met with members of the coalition-appointed Iraqi Governing Council to discuss the political process, in which the council is to hand over power to a new, transitional government by June 30. ``Iraq is a better place and will become a far better place as a result of that transition,'' he said. ``Life for a very large number of people in Iraq is considerably better ... and will be infinitely better when we can get on top of the security situation.'' Three large explosions shook downtown Baghdad on Tuesday evening, triggering a warning siren in the ``Green Zone'' housing the U.S. headquarters. Capt. David Gercken, a spokesman for the U.S. 1st Armored Division, said rockets hit a bus station, a propane

[CTRL] Media Silence on 9/11 (Schechter and Kelly)
-Caveat Lector- Conspiracy theories about these events flourish because independently verified information has yet to see the light of day. More importantly no one has been held accountable for any lapses or misjudgments that left our country undefended. We live in a county where crime scene investigation TV shows are all the rage. Yet, in one of the most serious crimes in this century, there has been no official rush to get all the facts. If a person was shot in front of the World Trade Center, there would be more of an urgent inquiry into that killing than was accorded the murder of thousands of people in broad daylight. There would be a trial, witnesses giving sworn testimony, evidence presented in public for anyone interested to review and discern. None of this has yet to happen with regard to 9/11. Is it any wonder that skepticism and suspicion flourish? http://www.alternet.org/print.html?StoryID=17254 Media Silence on 9/11 Danny Schechter and Colleen Kelly, AlterNetNovember 24, 2003Viewed on November 26, 2003 A subpoena can work like truth serum. Drag waffling officials and dissembling politicians before a serious investigatory body and suddenly secrets start to spill and disclosures mount. Dots are connected. Confessions emerge, and sometimes, indictments follow. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 were criminal acts, but with political causes and tragic consequences. Two years later, there is much that we don't know about all that happened on September 11th or its aftermath. That's why we now have a National Commission investigating the attacks. Lest we forget, the commission was only set up because of pressure from 9/11 victim families, and over the stonewalling objections of the current administration. They didn't want an independent investigation at all, and when one was forced on them, this same administration ironically chose Henry Kissinger to head it. The creation of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (the 9/11 commission) was announced just before Thanksgiving a year ago. President Bush appeared to welcome it saying that the "investigation should carefully examine all the evidence and follow all the facts, wherever they lead (sic). It's our most solemn duty." A year later, what has happened with the implementation of that "solemn duty?" Conspiracy theories about these events flourish because independently verified information has yet to see the light of day. Many of us remember spending the summer of 1973 glued to the television, watching Sam Erwin's Watergate hearings. It was public, unrehearsed and very effective. It spotlighted a conspiracy orchestrated by the Oval Office. It helped the public see what was going on in the shadows. Will we ever see such a robust, no-holds-barred inquiry into 9/11? We encourage the Kean Commission to set an even higher standard. But the latest compromise deal it struck with the White House to limit its own access to documents undercuts its stated mission of a "full and unfettered" investigation. Commissioner Max Cleland, the former Senator from Georgia said, "If this decision stands, I, as a member of the commission, cannot look any American in the eye, especially family members of victims, and say the commission had full access. This investigation is now compromised." This recent compromise has also been denounced by many family members of 9/11 victims. The media has also compromised its role as an independent watchdog. Until recently, there has been minimal media coverage of the 9/11 commission. This apparent media indifference leads us to ask the media and our fellow Americans the following question: Which event has greater historical

Grassley from Iowa into carrying out his promise to investigate the Ford Foundation. Methinks he will do nothing unless there is popular support for such measures.] From The Invisible Government by Dan Smoot (1962): On March 10, 1952, Cox introduced the same resolution again. Because he had mentioned foundation support for Langston Hughes, a Negro communist, Congressman Cox was accused of racial prejudice. Because he had criticized the Rosenwald Fund for making grants to known communists, he was called anti-semitic. But the Cox resolution was adopted in 1952; and the Cox committee to investigate tax-exempt foundations was set up. Congressman Cox died before the end of the year; and the final report of his committee (filed January 1, 1953) was a pathetic whitewash of the whole subject. A Republican-controlled Congress (the 83rd) came into existence in January, 1953. n April 23, 1953, the late Congressman Carroll Reece, (Republican, Tennessee) introduced a resolution proposing a committee to carry on the unfinished business of the defunct Cox Committee. The new committee to investigate tax-exempt foundations (properly known as the Reece Committee) was approved by Congress on July 27, 1953. It went out of existence on January 3, 1955, having proven, mainly, that the mammoth tax-exempt foundations have such power in the White House, in Congress, and in the press that they are quite beyond the reach of a mere committee of Congress of the United States. If you want to read this whole incredible (and rather terrifying) story, I suggest Foundations, a book written by Rene A. Wormser who was general counsel to the Reece committee. His book was published in 1958 by the Devin- Adair Company. In the final report on Tax-Exempt Foundations, which the late Congressman Reece made for his ill-fated Special Committee (Report published December 16, 1954, by the Government Printing Office), Mr. Reece said, Miss Casey s report (Hearings pp. 877 et seq.) shows clearly the interlock between The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and some of its associated organizations, such as the Council on Foreign Relations and other foundations, with the State Department. Indeed, these foundations and organizations would not dream of denying this interlock. They proudly note it in reports. They have undertaken vital research projects for the Department; virtually created minor departments or groups within the Department for it; supplied advisors and executives from their ranks; fed a constant stream of personnel into the State Department trained by themselves or under programs which they have financed; and have had much to do with the formulation of foreign policy both in principle and detail. They have, to a marked degree, acted as direct agents of the State Department. And they have engaged actively, and with the expenditure of enormous sums, in propagandizing ( educating ?) public opinion in support of the policies which they have helped to formulate. What we see here is a number of large foundations, primarily The Rockefeller Foundation, The Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, using their enormous public funds to finance a one-sided approach to foreign policy and to promote it actively, among the public by propaganda, and in the Government through infiltration. The power to do this comes out of the power of the vast funds employed. Mr. Reece listed The Council on Foreign Relations, The Institute of International Education, The Foreign Policy Association, and The Institute of Pacific Relations, as among the interlocking organizations which are agencies of these foundations, and pointed out that research and propaganda which does not support the globalism (or internationalism) to which all these agencies are dedicated, receive little support from the tax-exempt foundations. I disagree with Mr. Reece here, only in the placing of emphasis. As I see it, the foundations (which do finance the vast, complex, and powerful interlock of organizations devoted to a socialist one-world system) have, nonetheless, become the agencies of the principal organization which they finance the Council on Foreign Relations. __ Do you Yahoo!? [CTRL] Are The Israelis Willing To Start WW III?
-Caveat Lector- http://www.rense.com/general44/aretheisraeliswilling.htm Are The Israelis Willing To Start World War III? Exclusive to American Free Press By M. Raphael Johnson 11-8-3 According to a recent article by veteran British military analyst Joseph Vialls, Russia has sent the most advanced and feared missile in the world, owned only by Russia and China, the P270 Moskit, also known as the 'Sunburn,' to Damascus and Tehran. This can only be understood as a counter to the Israeli threats to use nuclear weapons against their enemies. The Sunburn flies at an altitude of 60 feet and is nearly impossible to defend against. A few fired at Israel could make that state 'history.' Add to this a new Russian air force installation near the Kyrgystan/Russia border, coupled with a Chinese base just over their western border with Kyrgystan, and Armageddon may be on the horizon. All Russian jets at this new base just outside of Bishkek are equipped with Sunburn missiles. Vialls writes: The gloves are off, and with America and Israel still unable to steal any oil from Iraq because someone keeps blowing the pipelines, Russian and Chinese firepower buildup suddenly slammed the door firmly shut on Caspian oil reserves in the old Soviet republics. For more than a decade American oil multinationals have been conducting 'joint ventures' in the former Soviet republics bordering the Caspian Sea, with the stated intent of pumping stolen crude oil out through Turkey, then on to western markets. Now this route has been blocked permanently, and America is in no position to do anything about it, because a large part of the U.S. conventional army is currently bogged down in Iraq, being shot at and killed on a daily basis. For many who have been watching this region as a confrontation between the United States and Israel versus Russia largely over the control of the biggest gas and oil deposits in the world, a new front has been opened. As a response to this checkmate, Sharon recently visited Putin on Nov. 3 to meet with him concerning the nuclear issue in Iran. Quickly, Sharon permitted Palestinians to return to their jobs and eased their travel restrictions. Since the end of the Gorbachev era, the Russian oligarchs, nearly all Jewish by ethnicity (with the noticeable exception of Vladimir Potanin), have controlled nearly all key sectors of the Russian economy. This, of course, includes Russia's major ace-in-the-hole, oil and gas. The giant YUKOS conglomerate is presently one of the largest oil companies in the world, valued at about $40 billion. YUKOS is the result of a 'loans for shares' deal brokered through the semi-coherent Boris Yeltsin in 1995. Here, the liberal Russian government swapped loyalty from the oligarchs in exchange for privatization at prices far below that of the market. This $40 billion giant was bought for about $300 million, thus looting the entire Russian economy for the benefit of a handful of Israeli citizens living in Russia. When YUKOS' chair, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, was arrested at the end of last month, the American capitalist establishment went orbital. Forgetting the 1999 New York Times's expose on massive money laundering and fraud from YUKOS, the conservative establishment began to lionize oligarchy and, specifically, Khodorkovsky. Recently, The Financial Times weighed in with a giggly piece from Chrystia Freeland, which referred to the oligarch as a 'democratic activist.' About a paragraph later, the writer said - without irony - that the oligarch's model for economics is the robber baron factories of the early American 20th century. Fox News, on Nov. 3, referred to YUKOS as the most progressive corporation in Russia. According to a Nov. 3 Agence France-Presse story, Khodorkovsky made a deal with Jacob Rothschild this year that control of the YUKOS giant would pass to Rothschild in the event of Khodorkovsky's arrest. However, the Russian government has frozen all YUKOS assets for the time being. It is significant that YUKOS's liberal pressure group, the Open Russia Foundation, is completely controlled by Rothschild now that its founder is in jail. [CTRL] Ron Paul: Conscription - The Terrible Price Of War
-Caveat Lector- http://www.antiwar.com/paul/paul83.html Conscription The Terrible PriceofWar Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) November 26, 2003 The ultimate cost of war is almost always the loss of liberty. True defensive wars and revolutionary wars against tyrants may preserve or establish a free society, as did our war against the British. But these wars are rare. Most wars are unnecessary, dangerous, and cause senseless suffering with little being gained. The result of most conflicts throughout the ages has been loss of liberty and life on both sides. The current war in which we find ourselves clearly qualifies as one of those unnecessary and dangerous wars. To get the people to support ill-conceived wars, the nation's leaders employ grand schemes of deception. Woodrow Wilson orchestrated our entry into World War I by first promising during the election of 1916 to keep us out of the European conflict, then a few months later pressuring and maneuvering Congress into declaring war against Germany. Whether it was the Spanish American War before that or all the wars since, U.S. presidents have deceived the people to gain popular support for ill-conceived military ventures. Wilson wanted the war and immediately demanded conscription to fight it. He didn't have the guts even to name the program a military draft; instead in a speech before Congress calling for war he advised the army should be "chosen upon the principle of universal liability to service." Most Americans at the time of the declaration didn't believe actual combat troops would be sent. What a dramatic change from this early perception, when the people endorsed the war, to the carnage that followed and the later disillusionment with Wilson and his grand scheme for world government under the League of Nations. The American people rejected this gross new entanglement, a reflection of a somewhat healthier age than the one we find ourselves in today. But when it comes to war, the principle of deception lives on. The plan for "universal liability to serve" once again is raising its ugly head. The dollar cost of the current war is already staggering, yet plans are being made to drastically expand the human cost by forcing conscription on the young men (and maybe women) who have no ax to grind with the Iraqi people and want no part of this fight. Hundreds of Americans have already been killed, and thousands more wounded and crippled, while thousands of others will experience new and deadly war related illnesses not yet identified. We were told we had to support this pre-emptive war against Iraq because Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (and to confront al Qaeda). It was said our national security depended on it. But all these dangers were found not to exist in Iraq. It was implied that lack of support for this Iraqi invasion was un-American and unpatriotic. Since the original reasons for the war never existed, it is now claimed that we're there to make Iraq a western-style democracy and to spread western values. And besides, it's argued, it's nice that Saddam Hussein has been removed from power. But does the mere existence of evil somewhere in the world justify preemptive war at the expense of the American people? Utopian dreams, fulfilled by autocratic means, hardly qualify as being morally justifiable. These after-the-fact excuses for invasion and occupation of a sovereign nation direct attention away from the charge that the military industrial complex encouraged this war. It was encouraged by war profiteering, a desire to control natural resources (oil), and a Neo-con agenda of American hegemony with the goal of redrawing the borders of the countries of the Middle East. The inevitable failure of such a seriously flawed foreign policy cannot be contemplated by those who have put so much energy into this occupation. The current quagmire prompts calls from many for escalation, with more troops being sent to Iraq. Many of our reservists and National Guardsmen cannot wait to get out and have no plans to re-enlist. The odds are that our policy of foreign intervention, which has been with us for many decades, is not likely to soon change. The dilemma of how to win an un-winnable war is the issue begging for an answer. To get more troops, the draft will likely be reinstated. The implicit prohibition of "involuntary servitude" under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution has already been ignored many times so few will challenge the constitutionality of the coming draft. Unpopular wars invite conscription. Volunteers disappear, as well they should. A truly defensive just war prompts popular support. A conscripted, unhappy soldier is better off on the long run than the slaves of old since the "enslavement" is only temporary. But in the short run the draft may well turn out to be more deadly and degrading, as one is forced to commit life and limb to a less than worthy cause like teaching democracy to unwilling and angry Arabs. Slaves were

Long in the research loop of the "military-industrial-intelligence complex," Singer's involvement dates back to her experiments on returning Korean War veterans. Scrutinizing the behavior patterns of what were described as "collaborators," "non-collaborators," and "active resisters," she noted that the "collaborators showed more typical and humanly responsive reactions" than the other groups, whose members "tended to be more apathetic and emotionally barren and withdrawn." from http://members.aol.com/SMARTNEWS/Sample-Issue-12.htm The following letter was sent to the American Family Federation in response to an article adapted from "Cults in Our Midst: The Hidden Menace in Our Everyday Lives" by Margaret Singer and Janja Lalich, Jossey-Bass, 1995 (please note I do not agree with Singer and Lalich) ...an article in VOL. 2, No. 4, 1996, I was very dismayed at what I read in the following paragraph of the article "Aspects of Recovery" (page 3, column 1, lines 28-40). And I quote, "And what is wrong with cults is not just that cults are secret societies. In our culture, there are openly recognized, social secret societies, such as the Masons, in which new members know up front that they will gradually learn the shared rituals of the groupIn (cults), there is a deliberate deception about what the group is and what some of the rituals might be, and primarily, there is deception about what the ultimate goal will be for a member, what will ultimately be demanded and expected, and what the damages resulting from some of the practices might be. A secret handshake is not equivalent to mind control." (In the rest of the article I rebut this statement.) excerpt from my reply about her statement "This is only one of the rituals the Masons...perform. This ritual has many aspects of an alleged cult, including a vow of secrecy, dissociating experiences, and threats of death for divulging secrets. [CTRL] Four Former Heads Of Israeli Security Speak Out
-Caveat Lector- http://reese.king-online.com/Reese_20031126/index.php Four Former Heads Of Israeli Security Speak Out by Charley Reese Four former heads of Israeli security, speaking in Israel, have warned the government that failure to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians will lead to catastrophe. These men are not some starry-eyed peaceniks. They are all former heads of Shin Bet, Israel's secret police, which makes the FBI look like the Boy Scouts. You can be sure these men are not motivated by any compassion for the Palestinians. Yaakov Perry, Ami Ayalon, Avraham Shalom and Carmi Gilon warned that without a peace deal, Israel is endangering its existence. "We are taking sure, steady steps to a place where the state of Israel will no longer be a democracy and a home for the Jewish people," Ayalon said in a newspaper interview. Shalom added, "We must once and for all admit there is another side, that it has feelings, that it is suffering and that we are behaving disgracefully this entire behavior is the result of the occupation." Another hard-nosed Israeli, a former head of military intelligence, warned more than 13 years ago that the alternative to a Palestinian state side by side with Israel was national suicide. I've been repeating his warning ever since, but all I've ever gotten for my troubles was to be called every name in the book and accused of "interfering in God's plans" by a Christian Zionist. I tell you what: That would require a great deal more influence than I have. I couldn't even keep brussels sprouts off the wife's menu. The Israeli prime minister's popularity has dropped far lower than George Bush's. Ariel Sharon's approval rating is in the low 30s inside of Israel. Sharon, who actually started the intifada himself by brazenly visiting a Muslim holy site, thought he could bludgeon the Palestinians into submission. After three years, the Palestinians haven't budged an inch. Oh, they've gotten the worst of it, all right. After all, they are the weak party, with no army and only a lightly armed police force. Here are the latest numbers I can find: 892 Israelis killed and 5,981 injured; 2,570 Palestinians killed (many of them children) and 24,006 injured. In addition, 2,202 Palestinian homes have been destroyed by Israel and another 14,000 and change have been damaged. That's within the past three years. The problem for Israel is that today's young generation of Palestinians knows what happened to an earlier generation in 1948, when those Palestinians temporarily fled the fighting that established the state of Israel. The Israelis have refused to let them return to their homes, and for the past 55 years, they've rotted in refugee camps. These Palestinians aren't going anywhere. They will tell you that they would rather die than leave Palestine. Time and birth rates are on their side. It won't be long at all before there will be more Arabs in Palestine than Jews. At that point, all of Israel's choices would be bad. So, true friends of Israel will pressure Sharon's government to change course. Unfortunately, our president, having been put in his place once by Sharon, seems to be mortally afraid of offending the Israeli prime minister. And most of the Jewish leadership in America, at a safe distance from the conflict, is more jingoistic and uncompromising than the Jewish settlers. "Go get 'em," the leaders shout from New York and Washington to the Israelis. "The check is in the mail." Sort of like all the armchair generals and bar-stool admirals who pound their beer steins on the bar and say, "We have to stay in Iraq." Well, to do that, you gotta go over there first. At any rate, there you have it from the horse's mouth four horses, as a matter of fact. They are four Israeli horsemen preaching peace now lest the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse replace them in the near future. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Do you realize that capital punishment is still legal in Canada? In Canada, a death penalty can be meted out legally against only one group and that group consists of POOR PEOPLE. Premier Campbell is telling us that: loudly, clearly and proudly. His pride in Canadian justice will be revealed in four months when the unprecedented two year rule begins to deny government-supplied food, shelter, clothing and other necessities of life to those in need. If the Campbell-led society as a whole follows suit (as it is legally entitled to do), the global holocaust of the poor will come to a neighbourhood near you. British Columbians will join the 25,000,000 global CITIZENS who are legally executed annually for the heinous crime of poverty. The method of execution is the same as that which Premier Campbell has threatened against the poor of BC over the past year and a half.
