Re: Warning message about not found stats package on R-4.2.1-1

2022-08-11 Thread Marco Atzeri

On 09.07.2022 13:12, Xavier Delaruelle wrote:

Hello All,

I am using Cygwin through GitHub actions to test the software I maintain
(Environment Modules) on this system.

I would like to report that after the update to the new version of the R
package (4.2.1-1), a warning message appears about the "stats" package of R
which seem missing:

During startup - Warning message:
package 'stats' in options("defaultPackages") was not found

By comparing the hint file of this new package with the previous version
(4.1.2-1), we can observe that the liblapack0 dependency has been removed.

By manually installing the liblapack0 package, the warning message
described above disappear. So it seems that the "stats" module of R
requires this liblapack0 cygwin package to load properly.

Regards,
Xavier

thanks Xavier
for the info.

It is caused by a glitch in my build system, I had a spurious
cyglapack0.dll in the wrong place that was not recognized for R depency

I will update R package dependency

Regards
Marco

It would be ideal if this auto-reply didn't include the Cygwin
mailing list; there is no need for the mailing list to read this.
Scratch that; it would be ideal if neither the original question
nor the auto-reply were re-mailed.

What if Cygwin is up to date and you see that message?

Right.
In that case, the message from newer Cygwin will not be accompanied
by a recommendation to post to the mailing list. Instead it points
to some online resources about the problem.

winsup/cygwin/path.cc:
Cygwin WARNING:
Couldn't compute FAST_CWD pointer. This typically occurs if you're using
an older Cygwin version on a newer Windows. Please update to the latest
available Cygwin version from https://cygwin.com/. If the problem persists
  please see https://cygwin.com/problems.html

Those resources could loudly warn the user that mailing list messages
containing references to the FAST_CWD will receive a robot reply
and not get posted (for he reason that old releases of Cygwin
encouraged users to post reports of it, which keeps happening).

Newer Windows releases are likely to eventually re-trigger the problem.
The reporter may not be a Cygwin developer who could submit patches, or
sufficiently bothered, or knowledgeable enough, to find the site, follow the
problem reporting guidelines, and generate or attach a cygcheck log.
In either case of old or new messages, if users need more help understanding the
messages, they should still be able to follow up to the mailing list.

Please feel free to compose a suitable update to the above FAQ entry and path.cc
messages, and submit patches, suggesting the changes as preconditions required
to enable the milter to suppress the post and reply. SHTDI

It is a compatibility issue due to a speedup hack that could recur in newer
Windows versions.

Re: Warning: Cannot convert string "xlogo32" to type Pixmap

2019-12-29 Thread Jon Turney

On 28/12/2019 22:05, Keith Thompson wrote:

The xlogo application produces this warning message:

Warning: Cannot convert string "xlogo32" to type Pixmap

This is because /etc/X11/app-defaults/XLogo specifies

 XLogo*iconPixmap:xlogo32
 XLogo*iconMask: xlogo32

which causes xlogo to look for

 /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xlogo32

which doesn't exist -- unless you install the separate "xbitmaps"
package. Installing xbitmaps makes the warning go away.

 $ cygcheck -f /usr/bin/xlogo.exe /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xlogo32
 xbitmaps-1.1.2-1
 xlogo-1.0.5-1

xlogo is the only application (at least of the ones I have on my
system) that specifies an iconPixmap in its app-defaults file.

Suggested fix: Add a dependency so installing xlogo automatically
installs xbitmaps.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I have added the dependency suggested.

the software you are using, that you have not mentioned,

Please ask whowever is distributing it to upgrade it

is that the software needs to be updated and recompiled to work with

Hi, jumping in mid-stream, which is also dangerous.
One issue: it is possible to have multiple versions of cygwin installed on your
computer; perhaps checking the path for the module that gives the error might
help. I have a similar using using Altera FPGA build software that used a
different version in a different source path. Good luck!

Ignore the ocaml, prefix the names with lib, and for Cygwin add
*-devel to get the names of the packages to install; if using cygport,
consider adding the following to DEPEND="...":

libao-devel libgd-devel libgstreamer1.0-devel libmad-devel libogg-devel
libopus-devel libpcre{,2}-devel libportaudio-devel libportaudiocpp-devel
libsamplerate-devel libschroedinger1.0-devel libtheora-devel
libvorbis-devel

install those Cygwin packages, possibly curl, pkg-config, and
gstreamer1.0-plugins-{base,doc}, and check the ocaml and gstreamer docs
for additional plugins you may need to install, and edit ocaml PACKAGES
to disable unavailable optional libraries.

You might want to work thru the install alternatives on:
http://liquidsoap.fm/download.html
to see which approach is easiest for you to get something installed and
running. You may want to start by copying PACKAGES.minimal to PACKAGES
as recommended and decide what you really need.

HTH and good luck.

Ask whoever provided you with a very old copy
of cygwin1.dll to update to latest version.

Hi Martin,
the software that is packing that VERY OLD version of cygwin is
behind several years.

Ask them to upgrade to a more recent version or install
by your self cygwin from the source:

I tried to install the ones from koemaeda, but ran into some problems:
- I can only install one at a time
They seem to have all the same name. You would need the -uni- version
only anyway but have to decide for one size (11 or 14).

- Whichever I install, I cannot set the correct font size (which would
be 6.5pt for the '11px' one and 8.5pt for the '14px' one)
- Whenever I use another size (smaller than 13 for the 11px one or 17
for the 17px one), the displayed letters are blurry
Of course, because they are pixel fonts. That should be the same with
the .fon versions. I wonder anyhow why you'd wish to use pixel fonts
nowadays...

- Sometimes, I cannot see the font inside putty's text font menu
- Sometimes, I cannot see the font inside Windows's Fonts directory

In any case, this can be summed up as "these TTF fonts are broken" and
this is not the place for me to ask for support.
I will continue experimenting and possibly ask koemaeda for support.
Only the -uni- versions should be distributed and the two fonts should
have distinct names or they cannot be installed both.

Meanwhile, I have three questions:
- What was the package upgrade that caused me to get this warning? In
case I don't find a solution, I'll just downgrade it...

2.2.4
Actually, although there was some trouble with the new warning and it
has meanwhile been tamed to border cases (2.3.3),
nobody has requested to remove the warning alltogether (and I would
hesitate to do that only for a broken pixel font).

- Is it possible to set non-whole number as font size?
At the Windows API, the unit is different from pt, so some tricky
calculations could be possible but not to the granularity of 0.1.

Not supported by mintty.

- Do you think font weights could help me get a correct setting even with these
TTF fonts?

No, the weight would not affect the height.

Kind regards,
Thomas

2016-04-13 Thread LLoyd
Hello.

I am using the .fon ones (http://font.gohu.org/gohufont-windows-2.0.zip)

I never tried to start mintty manually, I am using the standard
desktop shortcut which starts "C:\cygwin64\bin\mintty.exe -i
/Cygwin-Terminal.ico -"

I just tried this:
mintty -o Font=gohufont-14 -
which does produce the warning as you can see in this screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/igFuQGv.png

I *did* remove my .minttyrc font setting prior to doing that test, so
"mintty -" does not produce any warning and "mintty -o
Font=gohufont-14 -" does produce a warning.

Do you think I should try another one? If yes, I can either test all
the installable ones or only one if you want me to test only one.

Regards,
Alexandre

PS: starting "mintty -o Font=GohuFont" or "mintty -o Font=gohufont"
fails with a "font not found, using a substitute" error

I have forgetton to execute setup_x86-64 before gnuplot buliding.
Setup seems to upgrade the cygwin and gcc-5.3.0 (to 5.3.0-3).
After setup, the warning was disappeared.

1.7.1 and up until this point I did not have issues building from
source php 5.2.9 in cygwin. I am getting these warning messages when I
try to build php 5.3.1 as well. As far as I can tell this sqlite
method call to cygwin_conv_to_win32_path has not changed and I suspect
that if I went back and tried to rebuild php 5.2.9 with my current
Cygwin environment I would get these warning messages too.

Question - is this really an issue that would prevent me building
current or subsequent versions of php?
Question - Is there a potential workaround to this other than
downgrading my Cygwin install?

You should switch-over any use of cygwin_to_win32_path() to
cygwin_conv_path(). This new API is documented in the API
documentation along with other Cygwin-specific APIs. Take a
look:

It's being POSIX compliant: the fseeko/ftello functions are denoted CX by
the opengroup SUS:

So I think it makes sense to enable these for cygwin too. I'm whipping up a
patch for newlib.

This is most likely a variant of the same problem as with snprintf:

 http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2009-04/threads.html#00435

Selecting --std=c99 causes __STRICT_ANSI__ to be defined. These functions
are not in c99, so the declarations are wrapped in #ifndef __STRICT_ANSI__.
As the GCC manual says (under '-ansi'):

>The macro `__STRICT_ANSI__' is predefined when the `-ansi' option
>is used. Some header files may notice this macro and refrain from
>declaring certain functions or defining certain macros that the
>ISO standard doesn't call for; this is to avoid interfering with
>any programs that might use these names for other things.

If you use --std=c99, that means you want *only* c99 functions, and have
specifically asked to be warned about non-ANSI functions. I don't understand
why Linux does things differently, it's probably technically wrong but trying
to be helpful, but the fact is that if you write a program strictly according
to the c99 standard, you can't expect there to be a library function called
fseeko and you might in fact expect to be able to use that name for a function
in your own code without any clashes (since the c99 spec doesn't say it is
reserved).

As a workaround you could use --std=gnu99, which gets you c99 + GCC
extension features but doesn't define __STRICT_ANSI__, or drop it altogether;
what's best depends why you're using the flag in the first place.

The longterm fix is to mark up the newlib headers, looking for "#ifndef
__STRICT_ANSI__" and deciding where to add "|| __STDC_VERSION__ >= 199901L"

Seems Linux has got it wrong then, because ftello and fseeko are not
standard C99 functions. Use -std=gnu99 to enable GNU extensions.

You prefer to add an entry in termcap rather that altering the start

You got it! I use the one from Cygwin menu and the -tn rxvt-cygwin is
to be blamed. I changed it to rxvt only and it works perfectly.
Before this brand new install, I used shortcuts that I wrote myself
and there was possibly not this -tn thing.

Can we correct the shortcut in the Start Menu/Cygwin so that nobody
has the same problem in the future?

You'd use a DOS path. Cygwin autoconverts (some) environment variables
into cygwin format; IIRC %HOME% -> $HOME is one of them.

> So there is something strange with this TERM thing and rxvt.

Have you customized /etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt ?

Also, are you using the shortcuts in /Cygwin/ that were
created automatically, or ones that you created yourself? The
auto-created one for rxvt-x has this command line:

C:\cygwin-1.7\bin\run.exe /usr/bin/rxvt.exe -display 127.0.0.1:0 -tn
rxvt-cygwin -e /bin/bash --login

The "-tn rxvt-cygwin" command line argument always wins, no matter what
is specified in /etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt or ~/.Xdefaults.

I have not defined HOME but I can confirm that rxvt is reading
.Xdefault as I use it to define the window size, colors, font size...
I have tried to add HOME in Windows env. var but it did not change
anything (either with a DOS path or a Cygwin path).

So there is something strange with this TERM thing and rxvt.

As the default termcap already includes an entry for rxvt-cygwin-native
as a convenience for cygwin users, it should probably be updated to also
include an entry for rxvt-cygwin. The three entries:

rxvt
rxvt-cygwin-native
rxvt-cygwin

differ only in their ACS (line draw) character string, which only works
if you're using an OEM-recoded font...so, using TERM=rxvt is probably
good enough for both variants, for most people. (I know of only one
OEM-recoded font: "Lucida ConsoleP")

Maybe, but maybe not. Rxvt looks for the .Xdefault using the following
construction:

getenv("HOME") + "/.Xdefaults"

It does NOT use getpwent() to figure out your home directory from
/etc/passwd. Therefore, if you start rxvt "fron Windows" (e.g. using a
shortcut), then Rxvt can find ~/.Xdefaults ONLY if you have set %HOME%
using the Windows Environment settings tool. My guess is that on your
brand new installation, you haven't done this -- so the behavior is
expected.

Its a fresh new install! Nothing about TERM in .bashrc, nor in .bash_profile.

I just have the following in my .Xdefaults:
Rxvt*termName: rxvt
Looks like it is ignored.

That's the problem. /etc/termcap has an entry for rxvt-cygwin-native,

TERM=rxvt.

Not sure where the bug is. Either rxvt is setting TERM wrong, or you

normally cygwin is not istalled on the root
of a drive

C:\cygwin / system binmode
C:\cygwin/bin /usr/bin system binmode
C:\cygwin/lib /usr/lib system binmode
. /cygdrive system binmode,cygdrive

while on your system
D: / userbinmode
D:\bin /usr/bin userbinmode
D:\lib /usr/lib userbinmode

as for windows
D: is not equal to D:\

is it possible that is confusing cygcheck ?

I was running cygcheck from HOME when I got all the ".. hides .."

Thank you. The two entries for cygwin1.dll that result in the Warning
message are

d:\bin\cygwin1.dll
and
\bin\cygwin1.dll
being, in fact identical. Since not everybody gets this I deduce that my
mount settings are eccentric. But in fact these are merely

$ mount -m
mount -f -u -b "d:/bin" "/usr/bin"
mount -f -u -b "d:/lib" "/usr/lib"
mount -f -u -b "d:" "/"

and I can't see anything odd. I attach cygcheck output. Any illumination
would be greatly appreciated.

That's because this is a new feature that was just merged. The specific
patch that added it seems to be
.

+AC_ARG_ENABLE(fixed-point,
+[ --enable-fixed-pointenable fixed-point arithmetic extension to
C],
+[
+],
+[
+ case $target in
+mips*-*-*)
+ enable_fixed_point=yes
+  ;;
+*)
+ AC_MSG_WARN(fixed-point is not supported for this target,
ignored)
+ enable_fixed_point=no
+  ;;
+ esac
+])

It does seem a bit spurious to AC_MSG_WARN on all non-supported targets,
even if the user didn't attempt any --enable-fixed-point, but you can at
least silence it with --disable-fixed-point.

> Should I 'tune' the build adding something in 'configure' ?

Pretty sure this requires hardware support, e.g. on a DSP. Not the kind
of thing they make configure switches for... :)

Wow, I guess I was a bit fat-fingered and half-asleep on that one.
What I meant to say is that you shouldn't append the cygcheck output.
You should *attach* it. It is still requested information. But it's
requested in a particular way (for good reason). I hope anyone that
finds my previous fat-fingered post will also find this follow-up to
clarify it.

As nonadministrator, I then did

  mkpasswd -d | ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] "cat >> /etc/passwd"

'ssh' uses the information in your '/etc/passwd' file to determine your
home directory. You can use the '-h' flag to mkpasswd to set this as
you desire, if the default is not what you want.

I use ntbackup (backing up to a file), it preserves the DACL, owner and
posix group. I have a wrapper bash script for ntbackup , so I can call
it from with in an ssh session.

If your moving to a new domain, you can do all sorts of DACL, owner,
and posix group, (recursive) edits with "setacl":

may be of some help (find broken symlinks):
find / -L -type l

 -type c
l symbolic link; this is never true if the -L option or the
-follow option is in effect, unless the symbolic link is
broken. If you want to search for symbolic links when -L
   is in effect, use -xtype.

I have been using this snapshot heavily all day without any problems.

As I usually point out -- there is nothing magic about cygwin. There is
no way that it should be able to do something like reformat your hard
drive unless you were running from a privileged account. Even then,
you'd have to try pretty hard to make it do something bad to your hard
drive. I can't imagine how it could do something like what you describe.

Unless someone else corroborates these problems, I don't think it makes
any sense to remove the snapshot.

RE: Warning: Latest version of Cygwin DLL makes WinCVS (through Cygwin SSH) not work (Intern)

2002-10-18 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
For anyone reading this, please see the email archives for the same
proclamation by others and the recommended solution. The results will
be more useful than this warning.

As for the side issue of available "downgrades", this has been discussed
before on the list. It's not worth rehashing here (especially since the
poster can't make the claim that a "downgrade" wasn't available). Those
interested in this subject should thoroughly review the email list archives.

SSH) not work (Intern)

Hi!

I upgraded Cygwin yesterday (Cygwin DLL 1.3.13-2?). When I used WinCVS
today through Cygwin OpenSSH I got an error message when updating a file
saying 'OK unknown response'. After downgrading to 1.3.12-4 this error
disappeared.

We had a similar problem with a previous version of Cygwin DLL. Could this
be a reintroduction of that bug?
It could be usefull to be able to downgrade to a version sooner that the
previous one! When we had this problem the last time it was not possible to
downgrade to a version early enough to solve this problem and we had to
wait for the next release.

RE: Warning: Latest version of Cygwin DLL makes WinCVS (through Cygwin SSH) not work (Intern)

2002-10-18 Thread Mike Lerwill
OK, I give in, I have seen "complaints from others" of this problem but
cannot find what you are calling the recommended solution. The only item I
can find that seems potentially relevant recommends using CYGWIN=binmode but
this makes no difference.

I have (as recommended by cgf) tried the latest snapshot (1.3.14s(0.62/3/2)
20021017 13:52:27) but the problem remains unchanged.

If you have a specific item in mid a pointer to it would be welcome
