1) it's queried quite a bit during run time, you want that to be as
fast as you can (local ssd or similar)

Since the photos and the xmp files are on a NAS ,the files
in .config/darktable/ are the only ones that go out of sync.
Unison could be used to sync those on the 2 computers
I have used it for a number of years and it is quite good at
synchronizing 2 or more

I have a very similar to demand. I'm already in the second solution.
My basic setup is as follows:
- I import all my photos on my PC;
- The root folder of photos on PC is synchronized with my NAS (Synology)
with BTSync;
- On my notebook, I created a keyboard shortcut to a script
The risk is quite low as in difference to a local ext4 filesystem my NAS
share is ZFS based and recovering a snapshot or creating one is a matter of
seconds.
In addition no change is risking the raws... all differnces are doubled in
xmp's and the DB is a simple SQLite file...

I have for desired workpattern:
A) I use a weak laptop to import fotos, to sort them, tag them, rate them
in the livingroom.
B) I go downstairs using a powerful PC with better display to work with DT
RAW modules or Gimp
