Re: [darktable-user] Sticky mouse?

2021-10-10 Thread Coding Dave
I can confirm that I had the same behavior on my notebook around the
release of 3.6. Not sure about the exact version of dt, because at that
time I did not have much time for it. I was running xfce on manjaro with
Nvidia and OpenCL. Since then 3 things have changed: I switched (for
another reason) to gnome shell, I updated the system and darktable to the
latest version, which means master for dt, and I am not facing that issue
any more.

Hi David,

did you find a solution for your problem? I seem to have a similar issue
(running manjaro like you):
When I import an image that has exif information the image information
module inside darktable shows me "-" for title, description, creator,
publisher, rights, and notes.
Do you only face that issue on export, or is dt like for me already
throwing away exif info on import?

Cheers,
Dave

Re: [darktable-user] OFF LIST The difference between folder and directory,

2020-02-09 Thread Coding Dave
Actually there is a concept behind and os' following that concept are
calling the thing folder as an abstraction from the technical directory to
map the real world to the computer world. The concept is called the desktop
metaphor and there even exists the folder metaphor. The idea is whenever
you are sitting on a desktop, then you use the same tools. Whether the
desktop is digital or analog you have a paper trash, the desktop, folders,
notepad, (sticky) notes, calculator, and many other things.

So I guess talking on a usability level the term finder is used, whereas on
a technical level desktop is the word of choice.

BTW, Microsoft is doing this, Macintosh is doing this, KDE, Gnome, and
others are doing this... I think this is common these days

Hi Achim,

What is the exact lens name that is shown when you select the lens
manually? Please double check commas and dots.

Re: [darktable-user] Question regarding backing up one's darktable configuration settings...

You can just enter %localappdata%\darktable into
* the explorer,
* the start search field,
* the START+R dialog
* or other input fields as long as they are not browsing the internet
and the correct folder is being opened. No need to do any visibility

Re: [darktable-user] input color profile

2019-04-08 Thread Coding Dave
Hi,

I have found the cause of the issue (For Michiel at least) and filed an
issue https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/2357
You should be able to workaround the issue by shortening the name of the
icc profile. If this does not work for you then you face a different issue
and need to file a separate regression report.

Kind regards
Dave

Re: [darktable-user] input color profile

2019-04-03 Thread Coding Dave
Hi guys, I just confirmed the way to go is to file a regression on github.
How it works: We need an icc file and the dt version that was working fine
with it as a start. If we have that we can then find the commit that broke
the icc support for nikon icc files. As it never has been working for me
can you please give me the freshest dt version that still was was working
together with your icc file? (please verify that it was working before).
You can also file a regression (
https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues ) and I will try to find
the commit that broke it.

Cheers,
Dave

easy to revoke after review.

Re: [darktable-user] Lighttable filter

2018-11-23 Thread Coding Dave
Hi,

sure, I can write some script and do some filtering on filenames and
forward it to the non-revocable rm -rf $files - but this is very dangerous
and error prone.
It would be nice to have a visual feedback of the picked items and to be
able to work on them with reject/0 stars like we always do in darktable.
Darktable has powerful filtering tools based on tags, properties, file
types, etc. I was wondering maybe I just did not yet spot the property that
I can use for easily achieving my goal.

Kind regads
Dave

Re: [darktable-user] Lighttable filter

2018-11-21 Thread Coding Dave
Did you try your solution?

The G groups JPGs and Raws together. So imagine I have A.JPG, A.RAW, B.JPG,
C.RAW, D.JPG, D.RAW I will see 4 images if I turn G on and 6 if I turn it
off. However, having G on does not help me remove B and C because it also
shows A and D.
What I am looking for is a way to filter the images s.t. I see only B.JPG
and C.RAW because there is no corresponding second image.

If I missed something, please update me on your thoughts.

Kind regards
/Dave

[darktable-user] Lighttable filter

2018-11-21 Thread Coding Dave
Hi,

I have a Nikon camera with 2 slots and set them to put JPG on one and RAW
on the other. This makes the camera only delete one or the other when
deleting from the camera itself, it looses track of the coupled images.
Now I am looking for a way to remove the other one. So I would be
interested in a filter that shows all files which dont have both a
$FILENAME.NEF and a $FILENAME.JPG but only one of them.

Do you have an idea for helping me out here?

Kind regards
Dave

Re: [darktable-user] darktable automatic adjustments

2018-11-21 Thread Coding Dave
Hi,

I also face the problem having 4000 images just coming back from vacation.
Usually for me this will take several weeks/months.
I was interested to try the style approach mentioned above and indeed,
having a style with auto levels and auto exposure is different to copying
settings for these modules. However, it still does not seem to work for me:
If I apply the style and then open the levels module and press auto I get a
different result. So obviously auto wasnt applied either.
Is it me or is the auto preset style not working?
Having the auto style approach working would be helpful for my first look
at my vacation images.

Kind regards
Dave

I also own a D750 and the raw files are loading fine on my side. I've never
had the issue you are facing but I usually compile the latest master breach
myself. I didn't try your image, though, since I'm not at home right now.

Kind regards

PS: The only thing I noticed is that the colors are dull and are lacking
pop. So no showstopper issue. I hope to solve that issue after my Asia trip
that begins in less than an hour ;)

Re: [darktable-user] One panel with basics

2018-07-10 Thread Coding Dave
Hi,

I strongly support kneops with his Idea - its similar to an Idea I had in
mind for a longer time:

In reality the options darktable offers make it a nice tool for experts and
a horrible tool for beginners. For people that did not start with an easy
to use program like LR it is even harder because the learning curve is so
high.

A power user would probably need all the options of each darktable module
whereas an beginner needs only the most fundamental stuff. I see a
continuum here with the expert on one side and the beginner on the other.
However, darktable has so many modules, options, effects, workflows, and a
variety of combinations that the learning curve is quite hard for
beginners. And remember the pareto principle. You could say that with 20%
of darktable you can already get 80% of the results and for the last 20%
you would require to use 80% more - you know what I'm getting at.

Lets be honest, neither you always need all the sliders nor is the
useability from darktable extraordinary well:
Sometimes it would be better if you only have the minimum necessary. It
would be nice to collect these and place them all in one common place. Im
not talking about reducing darktable and removing possibilities. No way -
darktable lives from its feature rich implementation although feature-rich
is like contradictionary to ease-of-use and useability.
The only thing I suggest is to extract (link, not copy) the most important
sliders from other modules into one meta module that lists them. This meta
module would be a feature wise abstraction by only offering the most
important feature of a module. This would be very very helpful for
beginners and quick edits. Of course some poweruser would be required to
suggest the list of sliders that is to be shown there by default. In a
second step adding/removing sliders in the meta-module similar to the
favourite menu would make the program even more flexible and user-friendly.

When we look at the modules kneops has extracted his favorite meta-module
we can see that many options are like the critical features, some are
compensation/adjustment values, and some are expert settings anyhow (like
the blending - how often do you deal with that? If you work with 40 modules
I bet you are not using 40 blend options as well):
= levels
- mode
- *UI diagram*
- auto, pick black, pick medium gray, pick white
- blend
= exposure
- mode
- black
- *exposure*
- clipping threshold
- blend
= white balance
- *tint*
- *temperature*
- red
- green
- blue
- preset
- finetune
= contrast brightness saturation
- *contrast*
- *brightness*
- *saturation*
- blend
= shadows and highlights
- *shadows*
- *highlights*
- white point adjustment
- soften with
- radius
- compress
- shadows color adjustment
- highlights color adjustment
- blend
= crop and rotate
- flip
- *angle* (rotate)
- keystone
- automatic cropping
- aspects
- guides
= sharpen
- radius
- *amount* (sharpen)
- threshold
- blend
= no idea where "detail" comes from

Here we have ~40 lines of options/sliders, only 11 I would rate are the
core features, we have a selection in one module that comes from 8
different modules from different module columns, and 5 options are "blend"
(how often do you need that? I love that but honestly I use the modules
mostly without blend).

Usually these feature listed above are spread over several modules and you
have to search for them before you find them. The search alone across
several module columns is time intensive. Having the modules expanded is
wasting space, opening and closing them manually is time consuming again.

Imagine your editing procedure to start with the quick-adjustments on the
meta-menu. Imagine you have many of your most important features available
(linked) there and are quickly done with a rough edit. Imagine you realize
you need more options like for example the compress slider of the shadows
and highlights. Imagine you are opening the module and you see the sliders
therein have the same values as they are on the meta module. Wouldn't that
simplify your workflow and speeding you up without stopping you at any
point?

For sure I am missing many very important features you are using regularly.
I just try to share my vision. Imagine you can add your features easily and
are able to customize your own copy of darktable to your linkings.

Kind regards
Dave
