no, not entirely.
Recursive means the current directory plus all subfolders, sub-sub-folders,
sub-sub-sub-folders etc. and so on ...

Tnx, I hope so too... I have the pop-ups in English (wich I prefer) but the
installation is done in Dutch automatically. I don’t want that. How can I make
dt ‘speak’ English to me? :-)

@developers: could you please rename ‘recursive directory’ into ‘subfolders’ or
whatever the correct English name is?
AND... please add info about the M1 macs on the installation page if possible.

Recursive directories means sub-folders. I am not sure why the term recursive
directory was chosen over the common term of sub-folders. I hope you get your
problem sorted.

RE: [darktable-user] DT can't access files on external hdd with special software

2022-01-13 Thread hieke.vanhoogdalem
So I did an extra test: I right clicked on a raw file and opened it in dt. That
went well too. But when I try to open a complete folder from within dt, it
doesn’t work. The software only sees the disk, but not the files on it, wich
are visible on the Mac outside of dt. On the website it states that dt only
works with intel processors on Mac, but I am able to work with dt on my M1
Macbook Air with files that can be found on the local harddisk.

So I’m really curious about how to get my connection with my external HDD
working.

Suggestions are more than welcome!

(Kernel permissions haven’t been looked at yet, since it interferes with the
highest security level of my Macbook and I don’t want that if not strictly
necessary.)

You don't say if the machines are talking to each other. My first thing to look
at is can the M1 see the files on the Windows box? Using a standard file
manager/browser on the M1 navigate to the Windows box and the location of the
image files. Attempt to view them in a file viewer. If that doesn't work then
dt won't be able to work with the files either. Best then to consult the
experts in that area before attempting again with dt.

Hi Peter,

Danke schön. What I don’t understand, is that your external disk and main
volume for the images in DT have different names. In Windows this was the same.
Is this due to Apple/Mac?

I am here again, and I have seen the answer to Daniel. To be able to see the
images on darktable and also to edit them, you absolutely must import them into
darktable. And from what I know until now your mac can read your external drive
(which is not absolutely clear, hence a new Mac is working with APFS (Apple
File System), but when it shows the pictures i.e in preview, it can read them.
I do also work with an external drive.

I add a screenshot (Importscreen) of my setup, where in Luminar-1 is the name
of the external drive, Lightroom Bestände is the main volume for the images in
darktable and last Ferien Genève Nov 21 is the specific volume of the images. I
hope this can clarify things:

Tnx, Peter also explained that. Like I said: I don’t want to import, work and

You must import your photo in the mac. Your external disk is not apple’s

Hi Hieke,

That is already a good sign, then the computer can read the data on the drive.
Now one Question, I assume that your Mac is new and you downloaded darktable.
If that is so, have you imported the files which you created in Windows into
the new darktable on the Mac? If not, this is what you have to do first, before
being able to see and also to edit your pictures in darktable

Hi Hieke

It is the Filesystem of the Mac. You have to format the external drive you copy
the darktable data to exfat, to be able to read the Windows data with the Mac
you will have to format it either to exfat (better) or to MS Dos Fat, which can
be read by the Mac. Once you have transferred the data to the Mac you can can
then reformat the drive in the Mac to be able to use it on its proper system
APFS. The tags and all the edits you did to your pictures will be preserved,
when you copy the data with their xmp sidecarfiles. Off course you will need to
import the pictures in the "new" darktable

I just checked on my setup. It's already set to insensitive and I didn't
change anything, because I wasn't aware of it.

I do not know via the menu's, but in ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc, it
is: plugins/lighttable/tagging/case_sensitivity=insensitive

if you edit ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc, be sure to close dt first and
open *after* the edit(s).

Hey, thank you, I didn't know this.

In trying it out I found that it is better to turn on "tags case sensitivity"

"non-(case)-sensitive", the custom sorting may not work as expected. The tags

If you choose in lighttable "custom sort", you can change the order of images
directly by dragging.

RE: [darktable-user] 3 different questions

2021-12-02 Thread hieke.vanhoogdalem
@Terry,

I use star ratings indeed, but this still is a rating or collection/selection
within a certain folder on my harddisk. It would be great if I can mix ‘m up.
To give an idea: I have images from several vacations that I’m going to split
up to new selections. The original folders are based on the vacations, the new
selections on categories like ‘architecture’ and ‘nature/landscapes’. Those
categories aren’t limited to the original folders anymore.

About the histograms: I don’t rely on them heavily either and (fortunately?) I
don’t have an Adobe background. Well, except for the use of Photoshop Elements.
I would indeed like to see some examples of the different histograms with
explanation.

And is there a short and clear explanation on the differences of these
histograms?

@Marc,
Thanks for your answer. This might actually work for question 1.

@all: I’m still looking for an option that helps me show a selection. Example:
I have a selection of 20 photos in – say – my category ‘Architecture’. All
photos are good enough, the have enough stars or the right color given to them.
Now I want to minimize the selection to a series of 12. Therefore I want to try
several combinations without having to tag (and detag) them all the time. I
know that Lightroom has the option to select images and press some button to
see the selection. That makes it easy to quickly decide what works. I’d really
like something like this. I could really use that!

Dag Hieke,

For your folders question: it is possible to tag with subdivisions. I do that
for my work for the photo art school versus my personal work. The tags may look
like this:

*   school|cityscapes
*   school|portraits
*   projects|myfamily
*   projects|street

You can assign multiple tags to a single picture. For instance a portrait of my
son my appear under school|portraits and projects|myfamily. Or the same picture
may appear in school|cityscapes and projects|street.

Bruce Williams has some youtube video’s on the use of the darktable database
and the lighttable. Some of them may be a bit confusing at this point in time
because explained for a former version. But the tagging works as he explains.
You may want to have a look at these.

Hope this helps,

met vriendelijke groet,

Marc.

Onderwerp: Re: [darktable-user] 3 different questions

Hi Hartelijke groet,

someone else may come with a better answer for your question.
Lightroom uses collections which can be very convenient. However, a possible
easy solution for you is to give the images a color or star rating so that you
can easily filter the view to see a selection of images.

As for histograms, I was teaching my students about this last night. The answer
I always give is to use either log or linear based upon which one gives the
best information. There is no hard and fast rule to which one is best. Many
average scenes may look great with linear, but with some scenes where there are
fewer bright or dark pixels these may be not obvious on a linear histogram but
become very obvious on a log histogram. Just switch between the two and decide
which is best for the individual image. I would also like to point out that
coming from an Adobe background for image editing I relied heavily upon
histograms for editing. Having watched numerous videos by the Aurelien who is
the developer of many Darktable modules I have come to view over dependence on
the histogram as painting by numbers. The look is the most important bit when
editing. When using the linear histogram you adjusted the image until it looked
good and there was no obvious clipping. That is great. However, the log
histogram detected a few extreme pixels which were clipped. These may have been
a small number of black or white pixels that were at the extremes and not
significant to the image. The log display histogram overstates their importance
for this single image. If you want to see some examples of what I mean, just
ask.

Hi Hieke,

For question 2, you might like "click to enter full preview layout" icon
(which is after the two XY culling icons. This icon is a rectangle with arrows
pointing to the corners. It shows one image at a time as large as possible. The
left-right arrows work to move through your images. Type W to exit.

Is this what you want?

You can't change the order of images directly by dragging like in Lightroom.
But here is a work-around.

1. Use a tag like "myAlbumn_cats" and In collections, choose tags (instead of
filmroll) with the selection of myAlbum_cats. This is what marc.cabuy suggested.

2. At the top middle is "sort by" with a long list of options. If you sort by
title, you could title your images "1", "2", "3" and so get the order you want.
Or you could use the description field instead.

3. There is also a sort by "custom sort" which I just noticed, but I don't know
how to use that. Worth looking into.

3. I discovered that the histogram box shows 2 different kinds of

the best option for newbies to histograms? I was looking at an image that
seemed great, but the histo was way clipped. Then I discoverd the lineair
version and nothing was clipped at al. Of course I look at the picture for the
results, but I also want to work with the histogram more. I understand the
basic idea, but I don’t know for wich version that goes :-)

Oh and culling doesn’t work well. Sometimes it’s okay, sometimes I see another
selection being enlarged. In that case 1 is from my selection and the other is
the one next to it, but something I selected. Since I’ll be working on a
Macbook Air next week I’m not diving into this too much now. At this point I’m
still working on a Windows 10 64 bit machine, don’t know if that’s helpful info.
