[datameet] ML India | Bangalore chapter 7th meetup - Guest speaker from Aspiring Minds Research

2016-10-19 Thread Nishank Varshney
Hi all,

ML India's Bangalore chapter is going to have its 7th meetup on this
Saturday, 22nd October 2016.

We have a guest speaker - Shashank Srikant
, he's a senior research engineer at
Aspiring Minds' research lab. His key work there has been in developing and
leading automated programming evaluation products. He has developed
algorithms for performance assessment, maintainability and semantic
assessment of software code. He has filed 3 patents and his work has been
published at KDD and NIPS.

He will be talking about mapping a person's skills to the right job and why
it is a problem of great relevance today. He'll also talk about how one can
take such real-world problems and frame it as a problem in machine learning and
some challenges that one may face in doing so.

RSVP your participation on the link below.

Re: [datameet] Need help regarding pincode boundaries in India

2016-10-19 Thread Devdatta Tengshe
Hi Ravi,

There are always a lot of* schemesters* around. Just because someone claims
something, doesn't mean that it has any validity.

When the post offices themselves don't think of pin codes as mutually
exclusive and completely covering polygons, It is a big mistake to believe
these kind of data vendors who are just trying to sell snake oil to
unsuspecting organizations.

I'll request you to go through the hack pad as well as all the treads on
this topic, where we have discussed these issues ad nauseam

Regards,
Devdatta Tengshe

Thanks Srinivas for the quick response.

I was actually shocked when i came to know that few companies has such
spatial data - pin code boundary (in polygon) for whole of India. And they
are selling this. I couldnt understand the logic of how they have created
this dataset!! what could be the source? Even if they have considered
village boundaries for villages but what could be the logic for a city -
ward boundaries? not sure !! These companies dont reveal the details.

If there is any one who has interacted with a Post officer in this regard,
pls share your experience.

Thanks

Re: [datameet] TIN numbers and commercial tax divisions

2016-10-19 Thread Sutirtha Roy
Nisha - all companies are required to pay indirect taxes for their sales.
Just like PAN card for income taxes, companies file their VAT proceeds with
the State Governments using a TIN (tax indentification number) number. So
depending on where a company is registered, the company would obtain a TIN
from their corresponding commercial tax division>circle. Example:
https://mptax.mp.gov.in/mpvatweb/download/home/CTDContacts/CTDDIVCTO.html .

I have a list of TIN numbers that I want to map to these commercial tax
divisions/circles. Hopefully, then with a shapefile I will also be able to
map these companies across the country.

Something like the Bangalore link you shared is exactly what I am looking
for - if I could only crack the TIN-LVO (local VAT office) mapping
structure now!!

Thank you.

Best,
Sutirtha

[datameet] TIN numbers and commercial tax divisions

2016-10-19 Thread Sutirtha Roy
Dear DM members:

Is it possible to find out the commercial tax division that map to a TIN
number. For example the first two digits of a TIN number are the census
state codes but can we geographically disaggregate any further?

Also do shape files for commercial tax circles for different states exist
any where?

I found only Bihar sharing their maps here:
https://www.biharcommercialtax.gov.in/bweb/download/map/DigitizedMap.pdf
theser are in quite a bad shape. Is there something that is more usable for
Bihar and other states?

Thanks!
