I have a similar experience from the days I've been working on OMAP platform.
(I'm working on DaVinci now).
I was using mtd partitions (one for kernel, one for filesystem, one for initial
ramdisk, etc). I used flash_copy to burn the kernel image into appropriate mtd
able to figure out how to load
and run you app automatically.
