The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has awarded eight scholarships so that 
members can attend the Digital Preservation Training Programme (DPTP) in London 
in November.



'Training budgets are under a lot of pressure just now, but the need for skills 
in digital preservation continues to grow', explained William Kilbride of the 
DPC. 'We decided we would try to increase the number of scholarships this year 
because they have been very popular.  This is the largest number we've so far 
funded through DPTP.  We're delighted to be able to support our members in this 
way.'



The following applicants were selected:

* Hugh Campbell of the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

* Anna Collins of Cambridge University Library

* Ruth Frendo of the Archives and Records Association

* Nick Hodder of The National Archives

* Paul James of the National Library of Wales

* Kirnn Kaur of the British Library

* Emily Nimmo of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical 
Monuments of Scotland

* Kate O'Brien of the Centre for E-Research at King's College London



Applicants were judged against three main criteria: the role that DPTP would 
play in career development; the benefits to a DPC member organisation from 
attendance; and the extent to which the applicant's job profile within the 
organisation pertains to digital preservation. Applications were open to DPC 
members and associates and reviewed by a small committee of the DPC and ULCC 
who teach the course.



'Best practice in digital preservation has developed considerably in the last 
few years but the need for dissemination has been a constant,' explained 
Richard Ovenden, Assistant Director of the Bodleian Libraries at Oxford 
University as well as Chair of the DPC. 'The DPC's Leadership Programme brings 
direct benefit to the recipients who will be able to bring latest thinking back 
to their own institutions. Moreover, because DPC guarantees a large number of 
places on the course it reduces the risks associated with running the course 
and that's good news for all the participants, whether we support them or not.'



The Digital Preservation Training Programme (DPTP) is designed for all those 
working in institutional information management who are grappling with 
fundamental issues of digital preservation. It provides the skills and 
knowledge necessary for institutions to combine organisational and 
technological perspectives, and devise an appropriate response to the 
challenges that digital preservation needs present. DPTP is operated and 
organised by the University of London Computer Centre in collaboration with the 
DPC.



This is the sixth time the DPC Leadership programme has supported DPTP in this 
way and it has now offered 32 scholarships so that members can attend the 
course.



The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is a not-for profit membership 
organisation whose primary objective is to raise awareness of the importance of 
the preservation of digital material and the attendant strategic, cultural and 
technological issues. It acts as an enabling and agenda-setting body within the 
digital preservation world and works to meet this objective through a number of 
high level goals. Its vision is to make our digital memory accessible tomorrow.



The next DPTP will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, off 
Russell Square, London from the 14th - 16th November 2011.

SCAPE Project: Request for examples of working and best practice documentation

The OPF is a consortium member of the SCAPE (Scalable Preservation 
Environments) project, co-funded by the EU. 
http://www.scape-project.eu/.

The project will enhance the state of the art of digital preservation in three 
ways: by developing infrastructure and tools for scalable preservation actions; 
by providing a framework for automated, quality-assured preservation workflows 
and by integrating these components with a policy-based preservation planning 
and watch system. These concrete project results will be validated within three 
large-scale Testbeds from diverse application areas: Digital Repositories from 
the library community, Web Content from the web archiving community, and 
Research Data Sets from the scientific community. Each Testbed has been 
selected because it highlights unique challenges.

One of the work-packages in which the OPF is participating is undertaking a 
task to carry out a survey of working and existing best practices documentation.

1. We are currently collecting examples of institutional guidelines, reports 
and documentation of working and best practice on Repository Migration.

If your institution has experience in, or if you aware of existing literature 
in this area, we would be very grateful if you would be willing to send us 
examples of documentation for our survey. The examples will be used to write a 
report on working and best practices to which we will add SCAPE experience. Any 
examples that we cite in the reports will be anonymised.

2. We are also collecting examples of institutional guidelines, reports and 
documentation of working and best practice on the Preservation of Scientific 
Datasets.

As above, if your institution has experience in, or if you aware of existing 
literature in either of these areas, we would be very grateful if you would be 
willing to send us examples of documentation for our surveyand report.

host the five-day Digital Preservation Management workshop this January, in
Coral Gables, Florida. The Application Form will be available on November

Digital Preservation Management: Short-Term Solutions for Long-Term Problems
Location: Miami, Florida, USA
Dates: January 8-13, 2012

Who Should Attend?
The intended audience for the workshop series is managers at organizations
of all kinds who are or will be responsible for managing digital content
over time. The workshop begins on Sunday evening with an opening session,
continues Monday -Thursday 9am - 5pm, and concludes on Friday at noon.

About the Workshop
The Digital Preservation Management Workshops, a series presented since
2003, incorporate community standards and exemplars of good practice to
provide practical guidance for developing effective digital preservation
programs. The workshops were initially developed at Cornell University
beginning in 2003 under the direction of Anne Kenney and Nancy McGovern.
Since 2006, McGovern has continued curricular development and directing the
workshop from ICPSR at the University of Michigan. This has included
development of Special Topic advanced workshops and a Train-the-Trainer
program. Through 2010, the workshop series was developed with funding from
the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The University of Manchester has joined forces with Elsevier, a leading 
provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and 
services, to develop new applications for text mining, a crucial research tool.

The primary goal of text mining is to extract new information such as named 
entities, relations hidden in text and to enable scientists to systematically 
and efficiently discover, collect, interpret and curate knowledge required for 
research.

The collaborative team will develop applications for SciVerse Applications, 
which provides opportunities for researchers to collaborate with developers in 
creating and promoting new applications that improve research workflows.

The University's National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM), the first 
publicly-funded text mining centre in the world, will work with Elsevier's 
Application Marketplace and Developer Network team on the project. 

Text mining extracts semantic metadata such as terms, relationships and events, 
which enable more pertinent search. NaCTeM provides a number of text mining 
services, tools and resources for leading corporations and government agencies 
that enhance search and discovery.

Sophia Ananiadou, Professor in the University's School of Computer Science and 
Director of the National Centre for Text Mining, said: "Text mining supports 
new knowledge discovery and hypothesis generation. 

"Elsevier's SciVerse platform will enable access to sophisticated text mining 
techniques and content that can deliver more pertinent, focused search results."

"NaCTeM has developed a number of innovative, semantic-based and time-saving 
text mining tools for various organizations," said Rafael Sidi, Vice President 
Product Management, Applications Marketplace and Developer Network, Elsevier. 

"We are excited to work with the NaCTeM team to bring this expertise to the 
research community."
