You mean it's not the upstream Debian?

It is Raspberry Pi OS, which is based on Debian. Most packages there are
taken directly from upstream Debian repositories, including Espeak-NG,
Espeakup, Libespeak-NG1 and Espeak-ng-espeak. I can check if their
dependencies are taken from there too, if you want (I believe so).

> I don't know why it got fixed.

Well, that's what we need to determine: what version of what software
was not working before, and what version is now running fine.

I copy some updates, let me know if you need more programs' versions.
What I did to obtain them is to show all dependencies (skipping
suggestions and recommendations) of espeak-ng, espeakup and
espeak-ng-espeak and search them in the update log file. I don't think I
skipped any, but if I did and it is important, tell me, I saved the log
file just in case:

Well, that's what we need to determine: what version of what software
was not working before, and what version is now running fine.
Otherwise I have simply no idea which version of the code you are
running, and thus no way to have the slightest idea where to start.

No, I don't have Speech Dispatcher installed (maybe I didn't say I am
using Raspberry Pi OS Lite). I don't know why it got fixed.

Now the espeak-ng command fails to speak until I restart espeakup (I
have espeakup running on startup, and espeakup does speak), which
didn't happen before.

"before" is a very imprecise thing. Without more precise details it's
hard to answer.

Before the update, the espeakup screen reader and the espeak (and
espeak-ng, I have the espeak-ng-espeak package installed) command were
choppy when used directly. However, if I created a wave file and played
that back it wasn't choppy at all. I could use the three (espeakup,
espeak directly, and espeak + aplay) at the same time.

Now it's not choppy at all. However, until I restart espeakup after
booting up my Pi (I have it start automatically) the other methods
(espeak and espeak + aplay) don't output any sound (but of course the
wave file does have the right content, only it is not played).

Thanks,

Sukil

Fwd: Choppy speech fixed when updating from bullseye to bookworm

2023-08-12 Thread Samuel Thibault
From: Sukil Etxenike arizaleta via Pkg-a11y-devel

Hi,

Subject says it all, it seems I only needed to update the apt sources to a yet
not released version. The choppy speech is entirely gone. Now the espeak-ng
command fails to speak until I restart espeakup (I have espeakup running on
startup, and espeakup does speak), which didn't happen before. Ideas to solve
this (or pointers to where to ask this) would be appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Sukil
