I just noticed after a very recent Sid upgrade that any flash drive
plugged in gets no drive label attached to it. Something's obviously
changed, but I can't track it down. Google doesn't help, at least with
the keywords I used. The typical dmesg I get is as follows:

I agree this is curious and, like you, I would want to learn the cause.
Since you've already tried `ps` without success, my next and last idea
probably won't help either, but have you taken a look at /etc/inittab and
the getty lines?
