According to Martin's we should format our USB stick or SD card using
EXT2 file system. I was wondering if I can use UBIFS instead (I don't
see any reasons not use it) but first I would like to count on yours
expertise.
Is there any advantage on using EXT2 instead of UBIFS?

I'm trying to power up my Sheeva Plug (which is configured to boot
Martin's debian from USB drive) with my USB drive connected over an
USB hub with other devices on it (i.e Usb headset).
Uboot identifies the devices connected but does not recognize my USB

I can't access my sheeva plug right now, but if I remember correctly mtd0 is
for uboot, mtd1 for the kernel and mtd2 for the system, so you would need to
flash the kernel to mtd1
You are right, mtd0 is reserved for uBoot.
But that does work in fact, just remember to reflash
