Bug#399173: Etch installation on HPC nx6325
Using installgui: Failed step: choose and install software, right after xorg configuration. Failed GRUB installation. No /boot/grub created. GUI mode hangs after switching consoles. Does this result in a screen flash after which you're sent back to the graphical installer? There was no screen flash. I switched from GUI to text console, to see, what could be problem to GRUB and came back to GUI. Installer has stopped to response from this moment. No keyboard inputs nor mouse events were possible. Bug#395259: nobootloader: [powerpc/pegasos] bad sed invocation breaks devfs style paths (division by zero)

The following line : That is not so strange as that line is using the exact same variable $bootfs_devfs as its base that the old code did... Should it be using something different instead? What is the value of $bootfs_disk_syspath and $bootfs_disk if you run the code with 'set -x'? For now I've added a comment that that should probably be changed at some point. (To be very honest, I don't see the point of the code added in 1.10 at all as the devfs path is still used as the base for the whole piece of code; I guess it is in preparation of a further future transition.) Don't be misled by the variable name. It's called $bootfs_devfs because it's the path before calling mapdevfs; if you aren't using devfs paths then $bootfs_devfs and $bootfs are identical. What $bootfs_devfs really means is the version of this path that can be used within d-i. I've just committed an IMHO better fix which will work for both devfs and non-devfs paths. Re: 2 little corrections for pci.lst
[Jörg] Today I checked all DX8 and DX9 ATI card entries from the pci.lst which should be supported by ati driver. I found only 2 things, one entry with radeon instead of ati and one missing card (X850). Just apply the patch. Otherwise the xorg detection is ok now - has much more cards than before. nv, i810 and sis are easy to detect, just ati needed more attention. The rest are too specific to look at em ;) Hi. Thank you for the feedback. To make sure all the discover-data maintainers know about the issues you find, you should send the reports to the Debian bug tracking system instead of directly to me. Bug#399737: Installation Report - Etch RC1 DVD does not install Desktop
On Tuesday 21 November 2006 18:55, Clyde E. Kunkel wrote: Comments/Problems: Partition hard drives: Selected manual partitioning, but test system configuration was not shown. Had to click to raid section, do nothing but return to partitioner to see software raidsets, then had to click LVM and do nothing but return to partitioner to see LVs. This is a known issue. Display LVs in the LVM section of partitioning does not display all LVs. See list above. Need scrolling window here. Could you provide a screenshot for this and explain exactly what is missing? Windows should become scrollable automatically when the data exceeds the size of the window. Reboot: Booted to logon prompt ok, but no X. Had to apt-install xserver-xorg and Gnome to get desktop even tho all should have been on the DVD. During the installation you are presented with a list of tasks that can be selected. Are you sure you selected the Desktop task for installation? That should have given you both XOrg and GNOME. We test this extensively before release and are fairly sure it works correctly. The task may not be selected by default depending on the characteristics of your system (e.g. partition sizes). They gui install is getting there, would like to see less of a gui like text install and more gui with drop down menus, selection lists, radio buttons to select items instead of clicking on full lines of options, etc. Yes, this is a first step. We hope to find developers interested in making it more graphical, though without adding too many frills and whistles and trying to avoid really major diversions between the textual and graphical installers. Thank you very much for your report. Cheers, FJP pgpPfvQh7ywfp.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#399573: Some further infos and partial solution
Additional information to bug #399573. Knoppix 5 (as reported) detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc. By booting the debian installer with install libata.xxx (or any other option libata does not understand, I found this by accident) the ata_piix module does not work (throws errors), and now the kernel detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc (as knoppix). They are working, but slow. Then I tried ubuntu, and here the sata devices are detected without problems (but I still don't know why). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? just wait more next time, Re: Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (4.0/etch)?
actually, there is no need for tons of documentation: the usage of the package debian-archive-keyring should really automate the whole thing, as long as it is done correctly: 1) release team generates new key and new package debian-archive-keyring 2) users install it : in postinst, /usr/bin/apt-key update is run 3) after some time (10 days), release team starts using new key If done that way, it really works, and we have a trust path, since the new package debian-archive-keyring is certified by the old key. The problem is that , in this particular case, the new package debian-archive-keyring was released 22 Nov, and the new key was used almost immediately : so people using testing did not have time to import it. next time, they should just wait (at least 10 days - but maybe 30days would be better) a. Re: Deactivated languages
2006/11/20, Eddy Petrișor [EMAIL PROTECTED]: As I said, the problem is the actual space on the initrd and having a latin languages image/CD and a asian languages image is not such a good idea since you might end up downloading the wrong image and will be faced with a semi-useless cd since you don't know any of the other languages. Can't we give a option to choose a set of languages at the beginning say ASIAN languages, European languages, AFRICAN languages ... We can ship a set of initrd images for each laguage groups and it can be selected from grub menu at boot. (like we used to ship linux 2.4 and linux 2.6 at the same time we could have 5 initrds each for a continent). I think this would solve the problem of initrd image size in a considerable way and would not be tough to implement I think. boot: asian Regards Praveen -- Value your freedom, or you will lose it, teaches history. `Don't bother us with politics', respond those who don't want to learn. -- Richard Stallman Me scribbles at http://www.pravi.co.nr

We test this extensively before release and are fairly sure it works correctly. The task may not be selected by default depending on the characteristics of your system (e.g. partition sizes). I am sure the Desktop and Base system were selected. I have also seen this behavior with the netinst CD (previously reported, bz #397036). Perhaps it is something to do with the fact that I am using a 20GB LV for /, but also configure a small (100MB) ordinary linux 0x83 partition for boot? Her is an updated (but untested) patch against the d-i/trunk to fix serial support for grub-installer. Patch to handle touchpads in g-i available
Hi I recently wrote a patch against DFB 0.9.25 which adds to linux_input the capability to translate absolute x,y coordinates generated by touchpads into relative ones: this allows using Synaptic touchpads with the g-i. The patch was sent for review to directfb-dev [1] and was said to be ok, updated patch is attached to this mail. I prepared an iso image [2] which includes the fix: i'm asking testers who previously reported their synaptics touchpad not working within g-i to test this iso and report results and feelings about how the touchpad works. cheers Attilio [1] http://mail.directfb.org/pipermail/directfb-dev/2006-November/002414.html [2] https://debian.polito.it/downloads/mini_synaptics.iso --- linux_input.c.orig 2006-11-15 12:23:52.0 +0100 +++ linux_input.c 2006-11-20 17:56:23.0 +0100 @@ -283,6 +283,21 @@ }; /* + * Synaptics touchpads related stuff + */ +#define SYNAPTICS_SCALING_FACTOR 3 +#define SYNAPTICS_FSM_START 0 +#define SYNAPTICS_FSM_MAIN 1 +#define SYNAPTICS_FSM_END2 + +static int x_old, y_old, dx, dy; +static int synaptics_state = SYNAPTICS_FSM_START; + +static int +synaptics_fsm ( struct input_event *levt, + DFBInputEvent *devt ); + +/* * Translates a Linux input keycode into a DirectFB keycode. */ static int @@ -484,11 +499,11 @@ key_event( struct input_event *levt, DFBInputEvent *devt ) { - /* map touchscreen and smartpad events to button mouse */ - if (levt-code == BTN_TOUCH || levt-code == BTN_TOOL_FINGER) - levt-code = BTN_MOUSE; + /* don't map touchscreen and smartpad events to button mouse */ +// if (levt-code == BTN_TOUCH || levt-code == BTN_TOOL_FINGER) +// levt-code = BTN_MOUSE; - if (levt-code = BTN_MOUSE levt-code BTN_JOYSTICK) { + if ( (levt-code = BTN_MOUSE levt-code BTN_JOYSTICK) || levt-code == BTN_TOUCH) { devt-type = levt-value ? Frans, you are not playing by the rules set up by the DPL about our dispute
Frans, Again, you have violated the ruling of our DPL in the mediation process about our dispute. You uploaded the version 1.42 of rootskel, without applying my fancontrol patches, which i was asking you since various days/weeks to apply, and then you revert the upload without any kind of comment. You are hurting our users (there where many requests for this feature from G5 powermac users), and are acting in evident bad faith, while insisting that it is all my own fault, this cannot continue as is. Please try to maturate a bit, and stop acting this childishly. Fellow debian-installer team members, please speak with Frans, and stop ignoring this issue, he is hurting *OUR USERS*, and as thus you have not anymore the right to ignore this issue. Anthony, this is another proof that your insistence that i recognize that this is entirely my fault is just plain wrong, and is never going to help solve the issue, despite my good intention in this. I strongly urge that you reconsider your judgement, and that you force Frans to respect your mediation judgement, and let me make work, get the patches applied in a timely fashion, and don't sabotage my work. I think at this time, it is evident that an immediate re-establishement of my svn commit rights, a removal of frans right to remove people from the alioth project, is needed. I thus ask you, Anthony, to act in this regard without further delay. Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#399687: installation report: low memory install: grub missing
Hi Holger, On Tuesday 21 November 2006 12:05, Holger Wansing wrote: First: is there a problem with building d-i daily builds? And also the file lsb-release says: DISTRIB_RELEASE=3.1 (installer build 20061102) Not so much a problem as an omission to switch back to sid_d-i for daily images after RC1. Should not make a real difference though as there were no real changes yet since RC1. Fixed now; thanks for spotting this. Comments/Problems: Huh, I got a new test machine :-) 233MHz Laptop with 32 MB RAM and 4 GB disc. You've got a funny sense of new ;-) 2.Question whether clock is set to utc or not was not asked in default install. Is that correct? Yes. Whether the question is asked or not and what the default is depends on the architecture and what other operating systems are found during installation. Install at priority=medium if you really want to see the question. 3.I installed from a netinst cd and only wanted to install a minimal system, so without any other package source. But it seems there is no grub or lilo existing on the netinst cds. From syslog: Package grub has no installation candidate Package grub is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source Calling 'apt-install grub' failed Therefore it is not possible to get a working system without additional package source. ??? If this is no error, there should be some documentation changed about this. This is strange. Both grub and lilo _are_ included on netinst CDs for both i386 and amd64 (just checked this for current daily built netinst). Looks to me like apt-setup failed to add the CD as a source (and currently it should be added). Can't verify that from the syslog though. Can you check that lilo and grub are on the image you used? (find /cdrom/pool/ -name lilo_* -o -name grub_*) What was the /etc/apt/sources.list immediately after the installation? (Or /target/etc/apt/sources.list after apt-setup is run if you want to check during the installation.) You have some strange timestamp errors in your syslog. Was the hardware clock not set correctly? RC1 with auto-RAID and graphical preseeding
Hi folks, I just noticed the new RC1 release yesterday and immediately I went to test the auto-partitioning through a preseed file, as well the automatic assembly of the disks to create a RAID device. These issues are gone and it works like a charm (at least as I noticed until now) despite a weird GRUB behavior that I cannot still understand. 1. If I install the system choosing the installgui option at boot time, everything goes fine and GRUB get installed ok. The system then boots and it's done. Though, the log says to not use /sbin/grub- install directly anymore (and points to /usr/sbin, IIRC). 2. Using the graphical installer my preseed seems to loose effect and 40% of the most common options are ignored and the install prompt me to type something or choose between 2 or 3 selections. Is there some special handler for preseeds in the graphical installer that's different from the console interface? Some screens I can remember so far: user password (I told it to use a MD5 hash), networking, partman, tasksel and others that should have been ignored or automatic. 3. Using the default option in isolinux my preseed file is read perfectly well and the installation goes on. It's all ok but the GRUB part of it. The preseed line which specify how to install GRUB is the same one from above and the system does not complain at all about it. GRUB get installed (or apparently seems to) and my RAID device is created right (automagically, as it should since the beginning). The issue: as the system boots for the first time after the installation process, the machines outputs a pretty nice no bootable device message. Only after using the install option with everything automatic (including the RAID, as told). My preseed.cfg lies inside the initrd (which I didn't touch more, except for this inclusion) and is attached to this e-mail. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong, if this is a weird bug or anything else :-) I've used a old preseeded CD of Sarge to make sure the disks and the machine are okay and it worked. The SUBARCHES variable is used in the toplevel code, which is common to the prep, powerpc and powerpc64 subarches, and because right now we don't build the coff mkvmlinuz target, or some random other one, doesn't mean we won't do so in the future. This code has been working since over 2 years, and is still perfectly fine, and if it needs changing, i will propose the change. Bug#397649: install-report: NTP sync missing by default

NTP could be at least installed but disabled instead of not installed. What's the point of installing something you're not going to enable? It's not that much harder to type aptitude install ntp than it is to type update-rc.d ntp defaults Although I'd like to have it enabled by default. Isn't it possible to start/stop ntpd based on when the dial-up link is up? Theoretically, yes. In practice, it would be a pain to get all the little fiddly bits exactly right -- not something I'd want to undertake. -- Olaf van der Spek http://xccu.sf.net/ Rick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Sarge installed successfully, but I'm having problems with the boot / root diskettes on Testing / Etch. The Stylistic has an external Fujitsu floppy drive connected, and I have a USB keyboard connected. etch installer uses 2.6 kernel instead of sarge (2.4) and the 2.6 kernel is really bigger than 2.4 so we can not put usb keyboard drivers on the boot floppy. So etch installer with floppies does not longer support usb keyboard and usb floppy driver, sorry :( may be we will try to find a solution but i think it will be after etch release for you, the only solution is to install a minimal sarge and after upgrade to etch Does the tablet have a serial port which you could use as a serial console (using either a terminal or other computer) for the install? Thanks for the input, but no serial port. The box has an onboard network card, but unfortunately the card is only accessible when connected to the separate dock which I lack. Re: RC1 with auto-RAID and graphical preseeding
Otavio Salvador wrote: Caio Begotti [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi folks, I just noticed the new RC1 release yesterday and immediately I went to test the auto-partitioning through a preseed file, as well the automatic assembly of the disks to create a RAID device. That's ok. I'll fix it. Looks like there's something broken or your image or on the install itself. Have you rebuild the installer? If yes, you could have lose the preseed behaviour change that had some package splitting or like. Would be nice to check it. what caio reported is very strange: i worked a lot on preseeding a graphical installer recently and i noticed no difference between newt and gtk interface behaviour. The preseeding should work the same way no matter what frontend cdebconf is running with. Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#379835: Recommend to tag #380226 etch-ignore; #379835 downgraded to important
On Saturday 11 November 2006 04:21, Steve Langasek wrote: I'm having a hard time distilling the information in these bug reports into a summary of what each bug is actually about or what the current status is. I don't find that at all surprising as it cost me a lot of hours to get get the info collected, the issues identified and, in the case of ntfsprogs, upstream convinced [1]. Isn't it the case that there is a workaround in place now in the Debian packages that prevents resizing of NTFS filesystems if they're detected as belong to a recent version of Vista? s/a recent version of// Is this workaround implemented somewhere *other* than the linux-ntfs package? Yes, it is implemented in partman, not ntfs-resize. Partman now blocks resizing of any partition containing the Vista OS (or rather: the files that are used to boot Vista). It does not block resizing data partitions. The upstream maintainer of ntfsprogs only recently was convinced that the issue is real. He has said he wants to block resizing Vista partitions, but I don't know if that has been implemented yet. It is certainly not yet in Debian. There is some uncertainty if the ntfsresize issue only affects Vista OS partitions or if it also extends to (Vista) data partitions. Note that I have also seen two recent reports about issues with corruption of XP NTFS partitions (#394963), though that seems unrelated to resizing. [this quote moved up a bit] But again, I don't understand how libparted has a bug separate from the linux-ntfs one. [quote from message Saturday 11 November 2006 04:38] I'm not sure there's any reason this bug would be specific to NTFS partitions, though, is there? libparted causes the starting sector of the partition to change, thus making the physical partition invalid. This bug is indeed not even strictly related to Vista partitions, but other partitions seem to get created aligned on cylinder boundaries by default (or we'd have seen a lot more bug reports). ntfsresize somehow causes an corruption of internal consistency (probably some meta-data about the partition is saved somewhere and is not updated after the resize) that is expected by the Vista bootloader. Your rationale for ignoring 380226 also makes no sense to me; if this bug manifests in the installer, isn't that still a data loss bug that we need to fix before release? There are also two other packages in testing, gparted and mindi, which use libparted, so if there's a dataloss-causing bug in libparted I don't see that it's ignorable even if we did accept an argument that data loss in the installer is ok (which I don't). There are a few reasons why I thought we could tag the libparted issue etch-ignore: 1) it is not a regression from Sarge 2) there has been precious little attention to the issue from the maintainers of parted even though the BR was already 3 months old; I talked to Otavio today though and he promised to start on it 3) the chance that people will resize a partition not aligned on a cylinder boundary outside d-i seems pretty slim 4) it is not dataloss is the strict sense: you can recover by changing the staring sector back to its old value (the trick is how to find out what the old value was...) Resizing a partition that is not on a cylinder boundary is scary anyway: fdisk will also do the wrong thing unless you remember to change the units it uses from cylinders to sectors (using its 'u' command). I did check parted itself and that does the right thing as it asks for the starting sector (IIRC). I have no idea about gparted and mindi. If you feel the libparted bug should be fixed before the release, that is perfectly fine by me. However, it really is an upstream issue and there probably is a very good reason why that alignment check was originally added. I would not want to just apply Bas' patch and hope for the best. Can someone who understands what's going on with these bugs please fix up the bug titles so that they're an accurate summary, to help the rest of us figure out which bits of information in the bug log are relevant to the current bugs? IMHO the bug reports are pretty clear. They all have the same origin: /me having problems booting vista after resizing its NTFS partition, but have diverged at some point to deal with the separate issues. There is no actual bug in partman, but the two other bugs makes a workaround there necessary until the other two issues are fixed, hence the blocks. It could be argued that partman should also check if a partition in an msdos partition table is aligned on a cylinder boundary before allowing to resize, but I feel the risk of that happening for non-Vista partitions is small enough to ignore it (people should always backup their data before resizing anyway, right?). If someone would supply a patch for that I'd apply it though. The BR against ntfsprogs has grown huge, mostly because it took a lot of effort to convince the
