Bug#399173: Etch installation on HPC nx6325

2006-11-22 Thread Verand

 Using installgui:
Failed step: choose and install software, right after xorg configuration.
Failed GRUB installation. No /boot/grub created.
GUI mode hangs after switching consoles.

Does this result in a screen flash after which you're sent back to the
graphical installer?

There was no screen flash.

I switched from GUI to text console, to see, what could be problem to
GRUB and came back to GUI. Installer has stopped to response from this
moment. No keyboard inputs nor mouse events were possible.

Regards

Arthur

Would it be possible to have the installer try to load the root floppy
after a timeout (say 30 seconds) if no key was pressed?
yes i thought about this option yesterday, but we have to put all usb
drivers on root floppy. i do not know if there will be enough space
because we have to move all net modules in net-drivers-X floppies

we have to test :)

Should it be using something different instead? What is the value of
$bootfs_disk_syspath and $bootfs_disk if you run the code with 'set -x'?

For now I've added a comment that that should probably be changed at some
 point.

(To be very honest, I don't see the point of the code added in 1.10 at all
 as the devfs path is still used as the base for the whole piece of code;
I guess it is in preparation of a further future transition.)

Don't be misled by the variable name. It's called $bootfs_devfs because
it's the path before calling mapdevfs; if you aren't using devfs paths
then $bootfs_devfs and $bootfs are identical. What $bootfs_devfs really
means is the version of this path that can be used within d-i.

I've just committed an IMHO better fix which will work for both devfs
and non-devfs paths. Sven, thanks for the report.

can you please share your steps to build NEW kernel for d-i?

Sure. BTW, I successfully build installer with custom kernel at last...

1) I grabbed linux-image-2.6.18-2 from unstable.
2) apt-get source linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6;
apt-get build-dep linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6
3) vim kernel-versions
4) vim modules/amd64/scsi-modules (I added arcmsr, the main reason to
upgrade kernel for me)
5) kernel-wedge gen-control debian/control
6) dpkg-buildpackage

Ok, we have a kernel udebs.

7) svn co svn://svn.d-i.alioth.debian.org/svn/d-i/trunk/installer
8) copy udebs to localudebs/
9) vim config/amd64.cfg (enable monolithic target; it's more easy to use
monolithic than any other media)
10) make build_monolithic

burn, install, enjoy 8)

Get:2 http://ftp2.fr.debian.org unstable/main/debian-installer

While the 2.6.18-2 kernels should have been fetched. This is probably due to
2.6.17-2 still being in the archive, and not versioned dependencies doing
strange stuff in these conditions. I have some serious doubts about a d-i
image resulting from such a build working, but haven't investigated further.

This bug report is thus serving a double purpose, first, to ftp.debian.org, to
remove the 1.22 2.6.17 d-i powerpc .udebs from the unstable archive, and
second so, maybe someone with a clue about the kernel .udeb dependencies
coming in and being able to comment on this issue, and maybe propose a fix.

This has never been a problem in the past and I doubt that the mere
existence of the old packages is the problem here.

Anyway, deleting the packages from the archive is completely the wrong
solution for this. Therefore closing the BR.

We'll still need to hack from Sylvain to copy these binaries (and their
libs) into rootskel while there is no cpio included in that udeb though.
Otherwise every klibc upload will break floppy installations because the
cpio in rootskel will no longer work with the newer libs.

libc6 has fixed #346342 a few months ago and now places a copy of the
timezone data file to /etc. However, the installer still creates this
as a symlink, causing trouble for people who are running their
hardware clock in local time, have /usr on a different file system and
do not manually dpkg-reconfigure tzdata after installation (this
reconfiguration creates the copy of the timezone data file in
/etc/localtime).

Debian-installer should do the same thing, creating a copy instead of
a symlink.

Comments/Problems:

The file modification times were fine during the install, however
after rebooting, most of the system had modification times 10 hours in
the future.

The system clock is set to local time (checked in bios).
I chose the correct timezone in the installer and UTC was set to NO.

I have had this problem with installs from the di-beta3 cd and weekly
build (20061009).

The output of date was correct after reboot eg:

ls -l /
...
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 2006-11-09 01:38 usr
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2006-11-09 01:45 var
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root24 2006-11-09 01:36 vmlinuz -
boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16-2-k7
navi:/# date
Wed Nov 8 15:53:04 EST 2006

This is a bit of a problem.

In the case of weekly(20061009) it prevents fc-cache -ffrom
running properly until 10 hours after the install (which prevents
ttf-opensymbol from installing, which prevents openoffice from
installing).

I assume the 10 hours is due to me being at GMT+10.

Bug#399737: Installation Report - Etch RC1 DVD does not install Desktop

This is a known issue.

Display LVs in the LVM section of partitioning does not display all
LVs. See list above. Need scrolling window here.

Could you provide a screenshot for this and explain exactly what is
missing? Windows should become scrollable automatically when the data
exceeds the size of the window.

 Reboot:
Booted to logon prompt ok, but no X. Had to apt-install xserver-xorg
and Gnome to get desktop even tho all should have been on the DVD.

During the installation you are presented with a list of tasks that can be
selected. Are you sure you selected the Desktop task for installation?
That should have given you both XOrg and GNOME.
We test this extensively before release and are fairly sure it works
correctly. The task may not be selected by default depending on the
characteristics of your system (e.g. partition sizes).

 They gui install
is getting there, would like to see less of a gui like text install and
more gui with drop down menus, selection lists, radio buttons to select
items instead of clicking on full lines of options, etc.

Yes, this is a first step. We hope to find developers interested in making
it more graphical, though without adding too many frills and whistles
and trying to avoid really major diversions between the textual and
graphical installers.

Thank you very much for your report.

Hi,

After installing my time is one hour ahead (I'm in GMT +1).

I guess the question that's no longer asked about whether the hardware clock is
GMT defaults to GMT instead of local.

Also, no NTP synchronization is available by default.

I really think Debian should install.

Maybe install but disable, although I'd prefer it to be enabled by default.

Bug#399573: Some further infos and partial solution

2006-11-22 Thread Klaus Stein
Additional information to bug #399573.

Knoppix 5 (as reported) detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc.

By booting the debian installer with
install libata.xxx
(or any other option libata does not understand, I found this by accident)
the ata_piix module does not work (throws errors), and now the kernel
detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc (as knoppix).
They are working, but slow.

Then I tried ubuntu, and here the sata devices are detected without
problems (but I still don't know why).

At present all the kernel command lines (in the syslinux files at least)
end in --, so anything after that is going to get put on the kernel
command line of the target system.

We could search for things that match preseed aliases, and things with /'s
in them, and strip them out automatically. Alternatively, we could
update the documetnation to reflect the fact that by adding another --
on the typed boot prompt, the user can choose which parameters they want
copied (since only those things after the last -- are copied), or we
could do both so that in most cases people would not be required to type
the extra --

just wait more next time, Re: Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (4.0/etch)?

2006-11-22 Thread A Mennucc
actually, there is no need for tons of documentation:
the usage of the package debian-archive-keyring should
really automate the whole thing, as long as it is done correctly:

1) release team generates new key and new package debian-archive-keyring
2) users install it : in postinst, /usr/bin/apt-key update is run
3) after some time (10 days), release team starts using new key

If done that way, it really works, and we have a trust path,
since the new package debian-archive-keyring is certified by
the old key.

The problem is that , in this particular case,
the new package debian-archive-keyring was released 22 Nov,
and the new key was used almost immediately : so people
using testing did not have time to import it.

next time, they should just wait (at least 10 days -
but maybe 30days would be better)

a.

But Hendrik Sattler is perfectly right and this knowledge has to be stored
 at prominant places like:

a) installation manual
b) apt-key.8
c) perhaps somewhere else

Could maintainers of a) and b) (and perhaps c) ;-)) acknowledge, that this

 important) to these packages?

 Kind regards

Hehe, i suppose i will now need to build and test your new version, or will
you be able to test it on your pegasos machine ?

I need to buy a KVM before I can really get that machine up and running
again (which is on the plan once I've recovered my finances a bit from
buying a house). I already unit-tested the change with various example
paths, of course.

Yes, that looks correct.

I was expecting go back to get me right to the menu from the user
 creation screen.

The back up functionality can differ somewhat between components. Most
of the time it will back up slowly through the component itself and only
then exit to the menu, but sometimes it will exit to the menu straight
away. It depends a bit on the complexity of the component and on if
slowly backing up to correct earlier answers makes sense at all.

The actual implementation of GDK library for DirectFrameBuffer 2.0.9
doesn't allow a GtkTreeView to be scrolled down to the row corresponding
to the active choice when SELECT questions are displayed.
This bugs shows up under GTKDFB v. 2.0.9 only and doesn't under GTKDFB
2.8.3 or GTKX.

During localechooser, the default line selected in the full country list
will be the continent instead of the country.

Steps to reproduce:
- start the installer with 'installgui priority=medium'
- select Choose language
- select Finnish as language
- the full country list will be shown with the line Eurooppa (Europe)
selected instead of the line for Suomi (Finland)

If the same is done using the newt frontend, the default will be Suomi, so
this is a bug in either cdebconf-gtk or in the gtk libs.

I just tried todays Etch beta netinstall install CD with the graphical
install (installgui). When the partitioning step is done and the computer
starts to actually do something in the background (probably writing the
partition table or mkfs) it seems to be unwise to click on
the Screenshot button. I got thrown to the text console and saw a
segfault. Then the partitioning manager was started again and at least I
could start from scratch.

Package: rootskel-gtk
Severity: wishlist

Many users complained about poor checkbox handler provided in the GTK
frontend to handle BOOLEAN questions.
A yes/no widget based handler would do better for this purpose, ATM
i'm thinking about implementing this with a combobox [1] widget.

cheers

Re: Deactivated languages

2006-11-22 Thread പ്രവീണ്‍‌|Praveen

2006/11/20, Eddy Petrișor [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

As I said, the problem is the actual space on the initrd and having a
latin languages image/CD and a asian languages image is not such a
good idea since you might end up downloading the wrong image and will be
faced with a semi-useless cd since you don't know any of the other
languages.

Can't we give a option to choose a set of languages at the beginning say
ASIAN languages, European languages, AFRICAN languages ... We can ship a set
of initrd images for each laguage groups and it can be selected from grub
menu at boot. (like we used to ship linux 2.4 and linux 2.6 at the same time
we could have 5 initrds each for a continent). I think this would solve the
problem of initrd image size in a considerable way and would not be tough to
implement I think.

boot: asian

Bug#399737: Installation Report - Etch RC1 DVD does not install Desktop

Could you provide a screenshot for this and explain exactly what is
missing? Windows should become scrollable automatically when the data
exceeds the size of the window.

Will provide a screenshot after Thanksgiving. Getting ready to leave
town and do a turkey at my daughter's.

Basically, I have a test system currently with 22 LVs and only about 11
are shown.

I am sure the Desktop and Base system were selected. I have also seen
this behavior with the netinst CD (previously reported, bz #397036).
Perhaps it is something to do with the fact that I am using a 20GB LV
for /, but also configure a small (100MB) ordinary linux 0x83 partition
for boot? Is there something I can check before leaving the installer
and rebooting?

ok, these days i'll be working on custom debian distributions and i'll

I do an install file=/floppy/preseed.txt the install reads the preseed file and reports an error.
When I press alt-F4 it show that a remove command failed after reading the file. If i do an alt-F1
to go back to the install program and select continue the install continues and all the settings in

Bug#224641: [Patch] fixup serial support for grub for etch d-i

2006-11-22 Thread Alex Owen

Her is an updated (but untested) patch against the d-i/trunk to fix
serial support for grub-installer.

Please note that the ${CONSOLE} has been moved to after the -- so
that it is caught as a user param. This saves special casing in the
install-grub script (which was the fix in my last revision of the
patch).

That basically was the old situation and still means that we need to
upload a new rootskel every time a new klibc is uploaded and floppies are
broken while we don't.

Patch to handle touchpads in g-i available

2006-11-22 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Hi

I recently wrote a patch against DFB 0.9.25 which adds to linux_input
the capability to translate absolute x,y coordinates generated by
touchpads into relative ones: this allows using Synaptic touchpads with
the g-i.
The patch was sent for review to directfb-dev [1] and was said to be ok,
updated patch is attached to this mail.
I prepared an iso image [2] which includes the fix: i'm asking testers
who previously reported their synaptics touchpad not working within g-i
to test this iso and report results and feelings about how the touchpad
works.

cheers

Attilio

Frans, you are not playing by the rules set up by the DPL about our dispute

2006-11-22 Thread Sven Luther
Frans,

Again, you have violated the ruling of our DPL in the mediation process about
our dispute.

You uploaded the version 1.42 of rootskel, without applying my fancontrol
patches, which i was asking you since various days/weeks to apply, and then
you revert the upload without any kind of comment.

You are hurting our users (there where many requests for this feature from G5
powermac users), and are acting in evident bad faith, while insisting that it
is all my own fault, this cannot continue as is. Please try to maturate a bit,
and stop acting this childishly.

Fellow debian-installer team members, please speak with Frans, and stop
ignoring this issue, he is hurting *OUR USERS*, and as thus you have not
anymore the right to ignore this issue.

Anthony, this is another proof that your insistence that i recognize that this
is entirely my fault is just plain wrong, and is never going to help solve the
issue, despite my good intention in this. I strongly urge that you reconsider
your judgement, and that you force Frans to respect your mediation judgement,
and let me make work, get the patches applied in a timely fashion, and don't
sabotage my work.

I think at this time, it is evident that an immediate re-establishement of my
svn commit rights, a removal of frans right to remove people from the alioth
project, is needed. I thus ask you, Anthony, to act in this regard without
further delay.

Sven Luther

2006-11-22 Thread Verand

ah, so you were actually able to go to, let's say, VT2, type some
commands and then switching back to VT5 (graphical interface's VT), right?

Exactly.
One more question: when you said you colud complete installation with
expert vga=791 was that a textual or a graphical instalation?

It was textual one.

Package: installation-reports
Boot method: netinstall disk
Image version: Debian 3.1r3 (sarge), netinstall, i386 version (!)
Date: October 11th 2006

Machine: Motherboard Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X3 3800+ AM2

Initial boot: [ O]
Detect network card:[E ]
did recognize my nvidia ethernet adapter, during install, however did not
recocognize it after installation.
(thus in later installation I added my old ethernet adapter card)
Configure network: [O ]

Install tasks: [ O]
Install boot loader:[O ]
Overall install:[ O]

Comments/Problems:
Bootloader did recognize Fedora Core 6 Partition already on the disk, however
did not set boot parameters of that partition OK.

FC6 Grub configuration should look as following:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1.2798.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.img
and for Xen configuration:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1.2798.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen.img

however debian boot configration looked as following:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1.2798.fc6 ro root=/dev/hda1
save default
boot

and:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1.2798.fc6xen ro root=/dev/hda1
save default
boot

Additionally installation of nvidia binary driver from non-free failed.

Bug#399687: installation report: low memory install: grub missing

2006-11-22 Thread Frans Pop
Hi Holger,

On Tuesday 21 November 2006 12:05, Holger Wansing wrote:
First: is there a problem with building d-i daily builds?
And also the file lsb-release says:
   DISTRIB_RELEASE=3.1 (installer build 20061102)

Not so much a problem as an omission to switch back to sid_d-i for daily
images after RC1. Should not make a real difference though as there were
no real changes yet since RC1.
Fixed now; thanks for spotting this.

 Comments/Problems:
Huh, I got a new test machine :-)
233MHz Laptop with 32 MB RAM and 4 GB disc.

You've got a funny sense of new ;-)

2.Question whether clock is set to utc or not was not asked
in default install. Is that correct?

Yes. Whether the question is asked or not and what the default is depends
on the architecture and what other operating systems are found during
installation. Install at priority=medium if you really want to see the
question.

3.I installed from a netinst cd and only wanted to install a
minimal system, so without any other package source. But it
seems there is no grub or lilo existing on the netinst cds.
   From syslog:
Package grub has no installation candidate
Package grub is not available, but is referred to by another
package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been
obsoleted, or is only available from another source
 Calling 'apt-install grub' failed

Therefore it is not possible to get a working system without
   additional package source. ???
If this is no error, there should be some documentation
   changed about this.

This is strange. Both grub and lilo _are_ included on netinst CDs for both
i386 and amd64 (just checked this for current daily built netinst).
Looks to me like apt-setup failed to add the CD as a source (and currently
it should be added). Can't verify that from the syslog though.

Can you check that lilo and grub are on the image you used?
(find /cdrom/pool/ -name lilo_* -o -name grub_*)

What was the /etc/apt/sources.list immediately after the installation?
(Or /target/etc/apt/sources.list after apt-setup is run if you want to
check during the installation.)

You have some strange timestamp errors in your syslog. Was the hardware
clock not set correctly?

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#397649: install-report: NTP sync missing by default

2006-11-22 Thread Olaf van der Spek

reopen 397649
thanks

Could we have NTP by default?

But it would be a problem for the minority who have no or only
 intermittent (e.g. dial-up) network access.

Why would it be a problem?

I leave it to the PTBs to figure out whether there is a compromise
 position.

PTBs?

Having NTP by default is not a d-i team decision but would better be
discussed on debian-devel.
The option to use ntpdate or similar *during install* to set the hardware
clock is a d-i decision and is something that is already on our radar.

I see four differences; somewhat in order of severity:
- no initrd line
- root should be set to LABEL=/ instead of /dev/hda1
- missing rhgb option
What does this option do? Is it required or optional?
- missing quiet option

What bootloader are you using on the Fedora partition? Could you send us
its configuration file?

Additionally installation of nvidia binary driver from non-free failed.

That is not an installer issue. Suggest you file a separate bug report
against the relevant package with details.

Cheers,
FJP

I wonder why prep is promoted to a general subarch here rather than
a subarch for powerpc only as it was previously.

config/powerpc/powerpc.cfg has:
SUBARCHES = chrp # prep coff ppcbug

Obviously prep used to be a subarch at this level together with chrp.
Looking at powerpc/prep.cfg, I see no reason why the old solution was
abandoned here.

If a change does need to be made, it probably makes sense to rename the
current powerpc subarch to chrp.
However, I think that the old setup is probably fine and that this is just
carelessness in the patch. I'll revert to the old setup if there are no
objections.

I wonder why prep is promoted to a general subarch here rather than
a subarch for powerpc only as it was previously.

Because, as i have told already in the past, prep didn't make the ARCH=powerpc
switch upstream, so has to build with ARCH=ppc, so is using a different kernel
flavour.

 config/powerpc/powerpc.cfg has:
SUBARCHES = chrp # prep coff ppcbug

Mmm, i don't know about this one, need to check, but my checked out tree is
again in a messy state with load of conflicts.

The SUBARCHES variable is only used for mkvmlinuz invocation though, and you
cannot really make any conclusion about what is listed there.

I'll revert to the old setup if there are no
 objections.

You clearly have no clue, so i wonder why you question the patch ? Go and ask
Colin or someone else with a clue or look at the code, since it is clear you
don't thrust me.

Another clueless comment.

Naturally, since you didn't understand what the SUBARCHES variable is used
for, and didn't bother to check, you had no chance to understand what is going
on here. Please leave that code alone, and leave it to folk who actually
understand what is going on on powerpc. Would be easier if you had not
actually unfairly outcast the most active of them.

The current code is perfectly fine as it is, altough your second hunk, altough
cosmetic could be valid.

The first hunk breaks prep support though, which needs the mkvmlinuz build
vmlinuz with builtin initrd, since it cannot boot a plain elf vmlinux and
separate initrd.gz, since neither yaboot nor grub2 boots on it.

Just give my commit access back, and let me handle the powerpc port, instead
of persisting in your spoiled child revenge, and try to dabble in something
where you are both clueless and uninterested.

Does anybody know of a mirror for cdimage.d.o on this side of the

RC1 with auto-RAID and graphical preseeding

2006-11-22 Thread Caio Begotti

Hi folks,

I just noticed the new RC1 release yesterday and immediately I went
to test the auto-partitioning through a preseed file, as well the
automatic assembly of the disks to create a RAID device. These issues
are gone and it works like a charm (at least as I noticed until now)
despite a weird GRUB behavior that I cannot still understand.

1. If I install the system choosing the installgui option at boot
time, everything goes fine and GRUB get installed ok. The system then
boots and it's done. Though, the log says to not use /sbin/grub-
install directly anymore (and points to /usr/sbin, IIRC).

2. Using the graphical installer my preseed seems to loose effect and
40% of the most common options are ignored and the install prompt me
to type something or choose between 2 or 3 selections. Is there some
special handler for preseeds in the graphical installer that's
different from the console interface? Some screens I can remember so
far: user password (I told it to use a MD5 hash), networking,
partman, tasksel and others that should have been ignored or automatic.

3. Using the default option in isolinux my preseed file is read
perfectly well and the installation goes on. It's all ok but the GRUB
part of it. The preseed line which specify how to install GRUB is the
same one from above and the system does not complain at all about it.
GRUB get installed (or apparently seems to) and my RAID device is
created right (automagically, as it should since the beginning).

The issue: as the system boots for the first time after the
installation process, the machines outputs a pretty nice no bootable
device message. Only after using the install option with
everything automatic (including the RAID, as told).

My preseed.cfg lies inside the initrd (which I didn't touch more,
except for this inclusion) and is attached to this e-mail.

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong, if this is a weird
bug or anything else :-)
I've used a old preseeded CD of Sarge to make sure the disks and the
machine are okay and it worked.

Cheers!

You still don't have a clue, please leave the code alone, it is just fine like
this, or at least consult with Colin before you propose any more breakage.

The SUBARCHES variable is used in the toplevel code, which is common to the
prep, powerpc and powerpc64 subarches, and because right now we don't build
the coff mkvmlinuz target, or some random other one, doesn't mean we won't do
so in the future.

This code has been working since over 2 years, and is still perfectly fine,
and if it needs changing, i will propose the change.

If you are bored and don't know what to do, please investigate why partman
doesn't set the RAID flag (and probably the LVM too) on mac partition tables
(and probably others too). This is bug number #397973.

Could we have NTP by default?

But it would be a problem for the minority who have no or only

Why would it be a problem?

No network mean the Network Time Protocol won't work.

Intermittent network (e.g. dial-up) means that NTP goes for long
periods with no connection to the external time servers. The ntpd
daemon is (mostly) OK with that, but some auto-dialers may see it's
occasional polls as a reason to dial the ISP, which is probably not
what the user expected.

I leave it to the PTBs to figure out whether there is a compromise
 position.

NTP could be at least installed but disabled instead of not installed.
Although I'd like to have it enabled by default.

Isn't it possible to start/stop ntpd based on when the dial-up link is up?

Bug#397649: install-report: NTP sync missing by default

NTP could be at least installed but disabled instead of not installed.

What's the point of installing something you're not going to enable?
It's not that much harder to type aptitude install ntp than it is

Although I'd like to have it enabled by default.

Isn't it possible to start/stop ntpd based on when the dial-up link
is up?

Theoretically, yes. In practice, it would be a pain to get all the
little fiddly bits exactly right -- not something I'd want to undertake.

There's a checkbox in the Gnome clock applet to enable NTP. But that
doesn't work if it's not installed and I doubt the average user is
easily able to install NTP.

The Stylistic has an external Fujitsu floppy drive connected, and I

etch installer uses 2.6 kernel instead of sarge (2.4)
and the 2.6 kernel is really bigger than 2.4 so we can not put usb

So etch installer with floppies does not longer support usb keyboard and

may be we will try to find a solution but i think it will be after etch

for you, the only solution is to install a minimal sarge and after
  upgrade to etch

Does the tablet have a serial port which you could use as a serial
console (using either a terminal or other computer) for the install?

Thanks for the input, but no serial port.

The box has an onboard network card, but unfortunately the card is only
accessible when connected to the separate dock which I lack.

Re: RC1 with auto-RAID and graphical preseeding

2006-11-22 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Caio Begotti [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Hi folks,

I just noticed the new RC1 release yesterday and immediately I went to
test the auto-partitioning through a preseed file, as well the
automatic assembly of the disks to create a RAID device.

That's ok. I'll fix it.

2. Using the graphical installer my preseed seems to loose effect and
40% of the most common options are ignored and the install prompt me
to type something or choose between 2 or 3 selections. Is there some
special handler for preseeds in the graphical installer that's
different from the console interface? Some screens I can remember so
far: user password (I told it to use a MD5 hash), networking,
partman, tasksel and others that should have been ignored or
automatic.

Looks like there's something broken or your image or on the install
itself. Have you rebuild the installer? If yes, you could have lose
the preseed behaviour change that had some package splitting or
like. Would be nice to check it.

what caio reported is very strange: i worked a lot on preseeding a
graphical installer recently and i noticed no difference between newt
and gtk interface behaviour.
The preseeding should work the same way no matter what frontend cdebconf
is running with.

Bug#379835: Recommend to tag #380226 etch-ignore; #379835 downgraded to important

I'm having a hard time distilling the information in these bug reports

 status is.

I don't find that at all surprising as it cost me a lot of hours to get
get the info collected, the issues identified and, in the case of
ntfsprogs, upstream convinced [1].

Isn't it the case that there is a workaround in place
now in the Debian packages that prevents resizing of NTFS filesystems
if they're detected as belong to a recent version of Vista?

s/a recent version of//

Is this workaround implemented somewhere *other* than the linux-ntfs
 package?

Yes, it is implemented in partman, not ntfs-resize. Partman now blocks
resizing of any partition containing the Vista OS (or rather: the files
that are used to boot Vista). It does not block resizing data partitions.

The upstream maintainer of ntfsprogs only recently was convinced that the
issue is real. He has said he wants to block resizing Vista partitions,
but I don't know if that has been implemented yet. It is certainly not
yet in Debian.
There is some uncertainty if the ntfsresize issue only affects Vista OS
partitions or if it also extends to (Vista) data partitions.

Note that I have also seen two recent reports about issues with corruption
of XP NTFS partitions (#394963), though that seems unrelated to resizing.

[this quote moved up a bit]
But again, I don't understand how libparted has a bug separate from the
 linux-ntfs one.

[quote from message Saturday 11 November 2006 04:38]
I'm not sure there's any reason this bug would be specific to NTFS
 partitions, though, is there?

libparted causes the starting sector of the partition to change, thus
making the physical partition invalid. This bug is indeed not even
strictly related to Vista partitions, but other partitions seem to get
created aligned on cylinder boundaries by default (or we'd have seen a
lot more bug reports).

ntfsresize somehow causes an corruption of internal consistency (probably
some meta-data about the partition is saved somewhere and is not updated
after the resize) that is expected by the Vista bootloader.

Your rationale for ignoring 380226 also makes no sense to me; if this
bug manifests in the installer, isn't that still a data loss bug that
we need to fix before release? There are also two other packages in
testing, gparted and mindi, which use libparted, so if there's a
dataloss-causing bug in libparted I don't see that it's ignorable even
if we did accept an argument that data loss in the installer is ok
 (which I don't).

There are a few reasons why I thought we could tag the libparted issue
etch-ignore:
1) it is not a regression from Sarge
2) there has been precious little attention to the issue from the
   maintainers of parted even though the BR was already 3 months old;
I talked to Otavio today though and he promised to start on it
3) the chance that people will resize a partition not aligned on a
cylinder boundary outside d-i seems pretty slim
4) it is not dataloss is the strict sense: you can recover by changing
the staring sector back to its old value (the trick is how to find
out what the old value was...)

Resizing a partition that is not on a cylinder boundary is scary anyway:
fdisk will also do the wrong thing unless you remember to change the
units it uses from cylinders to sectors (using its 'u' command).

I did check parted itself and that does the right thing as it asks for the
starting sector (IIRC). I have no idea about gparted and mindi.

If you feel the libparted bug should be fixed before the release, that is
perfectly fine by me. However, it really is an upstream issue and there
probably is a very good reason why that alignment check was originally
added. I would not want to just apply Bas' patch and hope for the best.

Can someone who understands what's going on with these bugs please fix
up the bug titles so that they're an accurate summary, to help the rest
of us figure out which bits of information in the bug log are relevant
 to the current bugs?

IMHO the bug reports are pretty clear. They all have the same origin: /me
having problems booting vista after resizing its NTFS partition, but have
diverged at some point to deal with the separate issues.

There is no actual bug in partman, but the two other bugs makes a
workaround there necessary until the other two issues are fixed, hence
the blocks.
It could be argued that partman should also check if a partition in an
msdos partition table is aligned on a cylinder boundary before allowing
to resize, but I feel the risk of that happening for non-Vista partitions
is small enough to ignore it (people should always backup their data
before resizing anyway, right?).
If someone would supply a patch for that I'd apply it though.

The BR against ntfsprogs has grown huge, mostly because it took a lot of
effort to convince the
