There exist at least one workaround:
1) press Alt+F2 (switch to shell)
2) apt-install busybox -y --force-yes
then repeat the same with linux-image-3.x.x
grub-common grub-pc grub (and all dependencies)
3) retry install task, and see what is missing
After reboot and aptitude update/upgrade

Default framebuffer resolution is too high for EEE 701. Installer does

Try to append vga=0 to GRUB cmdline.
Asus EEE PCs have non-standart screens, and some framebuffer text modes
just don't work.
Similar issue is with Wheezy on EEE 701.

I have Debian (LXDE) working on EEE PC 701.
Upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. There were some problems i remember.
Most probably, it is because Debian removed non-free firmware files.
Did you try full install ISO image?
