primitives are only used in the test suite and via function pointers in

refers does not exist anymore. Perhaps OP can try it again with a
current version of Maxima.
I have tried the same operation with a current version of Maxima
(post-5.33 from Git) and it works as expected.

I recommend building with gcc 4.8 or with clang, rather than removing
