Dear Maintainer,
I was writing a script using `zenity`, involving a line like:
zenity --text-info --editable > "$file"
which as you are probably aware, opens a text dialog, takes user input, and
puts it in $file.
After running this script,

The expected behavior, at least for me, would be Emacs printing what I had
selected, but instead it prints everything between point and mark, as if I had
used C-space instead.
The obvious workaround is to yank the selected rectangle into an empty buffer
and print that, but I am lazy :)

I prefer a stable system to messing around and possibly getting an unstable one.
Still, it's a shame I can't use the current kernel -- judging from the date of
the backports
kernel build, it seems unlikely it's been patched for Meltdown.

Since I don't know how the crash is triggered, I don't know whether this
helps or not. I haven't had it happen yet, but I've previously gone quite
a while without a crash.

Occasionally, mate-panel has crashed on my system. It's not a big problem --
the panels disappear, then reappear shortly afterward (kudos to whoever added
the error recovery).

I also encountered this problem after the latest apt update && apt upgrade. The
system didn't crash, though -- just the annoying right-to-left flicker
occasionally.
