I've had similar problems on amd64... The solution for me was to
upgrade fvwm. If you are running fvwm on 64-bit architectures, you
might get hit by bug 318504, resulting in exactly this kind of
problem.
The solution is to upgrade to the version of fvwm in unstable.

The unstable version of mozilla-firefox, 1.0.6-2, works fine with
libgtk2.0-0 2.6.8-1 on amd64, but mozilla-firefox 1.0.4-2 (testing)
isn't working.
It should also be noted that firefox 1.0.6-2 don't work with fvwm
older than 2.5.130.CVS.2005.07.19.01-1 on amd64. See bug 319381.
