_XFUNCPROTOEND headers in X11/Xfuncproto.h, which you could use.

If it's relevant, the old system (where I formatted the USB stick) was
Wheezy amd64, and the new system was Wheezy i386.

dpkg-source gaining an option to be explicitly told the source package
version is the most-right answer here, but would require changes in both

There's also a protocol of some sort to detect when a user session is
exiting (I believe using X or D-Bus); we should probably implement that if
X or D-Bus is available, which would make the use case you describe
smoother.

typo or something in a recent upload, since the 4squeeze5 version is still
a transitional package labeled may be removed if unneeded.
