I noticed that udev consumed about 100% of (both) CPUs.
udevadm monitor prints out an endless series of complaints:

I've just experienced the same problem, to the extent that I can't even use the
xfce window system at all:
* pgrep xfwm4 finds no process. From my eyeball of the startup process, xfwm4
starts up and then fails; I've yet to find the log that shows the failure.

Using the session and startup settings, I managed to insert the session
chooser into the xfce4 startup from the gdm startup manager. By choosing a new,
blank session I was able to get xfwm to start.
My guess is that some session-related corruption related to a recent update.

I replaced xpdf-utils with poppler-utils and printing works just fine
with cupsys -5. Are there any other tests I should run?
