A somewhat dirty workaround, but since the projection on both files is
identical, you can actually skip using proj at all by removing/renaming the
*.prj files. Then merging should work.

this bug seems fixed[1]. So I close this bug.
I just installed libsane from experimental (version
1.0.25+git20150528-1) and get the same error as before.
I have to agree with Greg that this bug is definitely not fixed.
