OK, here's a short follow-up on the problem:
It seems that it is related to following X11 resource:
nedit*fontList: -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*, fixed, fixed
If I disable this resource, I get different fonts and the growth problem
vanishes. The config file (.nedit*) does

Just open nedit, and use file-new to generate a couple of tabs.
Then change between the tabs several times; each time you change
