I was hoping for a mode where instead of making
pages 1\x{2013}44
instead make
pages 1-44
i.e., replace the unicode with the best matching ascii.
e.g., here just a humble dash.
Replace the copyright mark with (c), etc.

Good suggestion. I'll look into this. I actually
did something like this a while back when I wrote
a little Python script to convert non-ASCII stuff
from Microsoft CP1250 to the closest ASCII equivalent
since a friend of mine kept sending email and making
blog postings that he couldn't manage to
