This may be a more general DNS problem. I had problems with some applications
being unable to obtain IP addresses. This included ssh and iceweasel. When using
IP addresses everything works fine. Other applications work, e.g.

Installing and purging libnss-mdns seems to fix the problem (I also purged
avahi-daemon which came along on the ride). It may have been an error in the
/etc/nsswitch.conf. It should not contain libnss_mdns4_minimal unless
you have libnss-mdns
