I've been thinking about it, and I can't find any good way to do it
that doesn't require a web server. Any solution I could think of would
require either some kind of local server (it seems much easier to just
install Apache or
just a note:
specific server just for this functionality), or writing potentially
very complicated Javascript. The second case is probably much worse,
as the solution would probably depend on the browser, so they seem
like pretty bad ideas.

Right, I forgot about the Sphinx reference. jQuery in itself doesn't
solve much, but

probably you are right -- I just bluntly assumed that jquery's index
would be simple to generate.
I would still would have preferred if the bugreport was left opened so
there was a note for possible future work/extension.
