Bug#350086: firefox: Refuse to start after power failure
Package: firefox Version: 1.5.dfsg-3 Severity: normal After a power-failure, firefox refuses to start. It only give me a window with the title close firefox and with a text saying that firefox is already running and that I either have to close that firefox or restart the system. I don't have any firefox running and a restart of the system don't help at all. In order to start firefox, I had to remove both the symlink lock AND the file .parentlock in my profile. If I just remove the lock symlink, I still get the same error message. It is not that easy to figure out that you have to remove the .parentlock file... / Anders -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (50, 'unstable'), (1, 'sarge-unsupported') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to sv_SE) Versions of packages firefox depends on: ii debianutils 2.15.2 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii fontconfig 2.3.2-1.1 generic font configuration library ii libatk1.0-0 1.10.3-1The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc62.3.5-8.1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcairo21.0.2-3 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.3.2-1.1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.1.7-2.4 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.0.2-5 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.8.5-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.8.10-1The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libidl0 0.8.5-1 library for parsing CORBA IDL file ii libjpeg626b-11 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libpango1.0-01.10.2-1Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-5 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++6 4.0.2-5 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System protocol client li ii libxcursor1 1.1.3-1 X cursor management library ii libxext6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxft2 2.1.7-1 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System Input extension li ii libxinerama1 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System multi-head display ii libxp6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System printing extension ii libxrandr2 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System Resize, Rotate and ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0.2-1 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Toolkit Intrinsics ii psmisc 22.1-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-9 compression library - runtime firefox recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. However, while surfing around I came across some comments that seem to indicate that this boot parameter only works for kernels 2.6.13 and above, and I'm assuming that the Etch installer uses a 2.6.12 kernel by default. With 2.6.12 the trick seems to be to edit the kernel header Not exactly. The installer images (daily builds you find on http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer) use a 2.6.15 kernel The etch beta1 images use 2.6.12 Both will install 2.6.12 if you install testing...or 2.6.15 if you install unstable. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#349288: [G-I][L10N] G-I crashes after country is selected and the language is Bengali
Hmm this could be related to either the installed fonts on the system when the build was done its changed quite a bit lately. Also I recall we are subsetting the fonts to remove overlapping unicode sequences so that would result potentially in a small error over some unicode range i.e it crashs with a particular char sequence. In either case you should see similar bug reports for other languages over time. Other then that I don't see language specific bugs happening unless its triggering something inside pango itself. Actually i have seen this type of behaviour for all languages that used Devangari, but for some reason (probably wrong syntax in BTS handling) I didn't changed the title of the bug. I suspect that there is a breakage in the lohit fonts because fontforge complained that it could not open the font when I tried to strip either lohit_pa or lohit_be (I think) on the plane back home. Maybe someone could try to test with lohit fonts and see if is reproducible? -- Regards, EddyP = Imagination is more important than knowledge A.Einstein

Bug#350076: subversion: svn diff --diff-cmd option fails inscrutably
[Britton Leo Kerin] Now since fldiff can be invoked 'fldiff file1 file2' just like diff, you would expect it to work here, or if not, you would expect a specification somewhere from svn saying just how it intends to invoke the supplied diff command. But I didn't find anything like that. Upstream has discussed this a bit in the past (documenting --diff-cmd better), and IIRC, the general idea was that --diff-cmd is really only supported nowadays for compatibility and there's not much enthusiasm for encouraging people to use it. Alternately, svn diff could provide some way to output what exactly its doing at run time. --diff-cmd=echo You'll see that the svn client itself outputs the Index: and == lines, then invokes the diff program. Writing a shell wrapper around any file differencing program you want should be a straightforward affair. Peter signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#350093: libfinance-quote-perl: binary-indep files in /usr/lib
Package: libfinance-quote-perl Version: 1.08-1 Severity: serious Justification: Violates perl policy The libfinance-quote-perl package is installing binary-independent files into /usr/lib when it should actually put them into /usr/share. For information on how to build perl packages that conform with policy please see the Debian perl policy document at: http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/perl-policy/ When building a package you can use lintian to help spot errors like this. Also the package has this line in the debian/control: Architecture: any which is incorrect, I think the further line specifying 'all' might be working as an override but this is probably not reliable behaviour. I notice you have not updated this package since July 2003. Having looked through the current list of bugs, especially requests for new upstream versions to fix important bugs, I would ask you to seriously consider whether you are still interested in maintaining this package. If not then please orphan the package so someone else can take it on. Bug#346086: tetex-bin: New integer overflows in xpdf copy [CVE-2005-3624, CVE-2005-3625, CVE-2005-3627]
Hi Hilmar! Hilmar Preusse [2006-01-27 9:56 +0100]: This is precisely the fix that is required to avoid endless loops with prematurely ending PDF files (CVE-2005-3625). So it is not exploitable to execute any code or something, but it's still a nasty DoS, particularly in Cups. So I would prefer to apply it, especially since it's such an easy and straightforward change. So, what is that now? - a security leak, which must be fixed - rather an inconvenience, which should be fixed? For CUPS it was a real DoS which must be fixed, but for tetex-bin it's just an inconvenience; there will be few systems which automatically process untrusted LaTeX documents with PDF files sent by remote attackers. Does that bug deserve still the severity critical? If not I propose to lower the severity to important, keep that bug open until the support for oldstable has ended and close the bug then. For now I mark that bug as not found in 2.0.2-30sarge4 and found in 1.0.7+20011202-7.7 . Works for me. Bug#330026: PNG crush NMU
Hello, The following remarks about my previous patch came up on the Debian QA mailing list. On Thu, 26 Jan 2006, Russ Allbery wrote: Ugh, that's not a very good solution. That means that the next time there's a security hole in zlib or libpng, which hasn't been uncommon, it may also affect pngcrush and someone has to remember to update it as well. This makes life much harder for the security team. And On Fri, 27 Jan 2006, Bas Zoetekouw wrote: Please don't do that, it will make everyone's live (en specifically those of the security team) much harder. I have prepared a new patch for pngcrush. The diff is attached. What it does is to add a source file (pngpf_for_crush.c) that contains some innocent looking functions from libpng which were declared PRIVATE in the recent version (1.2.8rel) of libpng. I agree that this is still a far from ideal solution but: a. The functions indeed appear to be quite innocent. In particular, these functions are built out of non PRIVATE functions and modify data structures that are non PRIVATE. b. The functions are copied verbatim from the latest libpng source but have essentially not changed from 2002 versions of the same functions. c. The size of this added file is less than 10K so it should be easy to check it for bugs or security holes in principle. d. With these changes, pngcrush builds (and works) based on the existing libpng-dev and zlib1g-dev packages. Having a look at debian/control I can see it's just for i386 and powerpc. Would it be possible to expand it to amd64 too? I don't know if it's i386-powerpc-only software, or if those are the binaries are only provided for those archs, and in case one wants to have them on, say, amd64, then he needs to get the sources and build module? Bug#350102: moodle: wwwroot setting impossible to get right
Package: moodle Version: 1.4.4.dfsg.1-3 Severity: normal The working of Moodle's wwwroot configuration variable is causing us problems. I may be missing something, but even if I am, the default way of doing things seems unnecessarily awkward. The apparent intention is for wwroot to be set to a full base URL: $CFG-wwwroot = 'http://oursite.com/path/to/moodle/'; This base URL is then used for both internal links, i.e. from one location in the Moodle-managed site to another, and in emails and other other external references--e.g. click on this link to see your new message. However, having full URLs in internal links breaks two usage models that we need in different situations: i. The host may be known under different names or IP addresses to different clients. That's a hard problem when it comes to emails and other external references, but at least it shouldn't break the internal links. ii. In some cases it may be desirable to use https instead of http. With internal links specifying the protocol as well as the hostname, https access becomes impossible without either falling back to http, or forcing https use for everyone. In reality it may be just the admin who needs to use https, and the certificate may be self-signed. In that case it wouldn't be reasonable at all to force all users into https. These problems can be worked around by setting wwwroot to an absolute path instead of a full URL, e.g: $CFG-wwwroot = '/path/to/moodle/'; This works fine, except that the external references are now merely paths, not complete URLs! So people get emails saying click on this link: /path/to/moodle/ which of course doesn't work. A solution I hope could be relatively painless would be to split wwwroot into the http://oursite.com/ and /path/to/moodle/ parts internally on startup, keeping only the latter part in wwwroot but prepending the first part in all cases that generate external references. I'm assuming those are less common than the internal-reference cases in the code. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages moodle depends on: ii apache2-mpm-prefork [httpd] 2.0.54-5traditional model for Apache2 ii debconf [debconf-2.0]1.4.50 Debian configuration management sy ii mimetex 1.50-1 LaTeX math expressions to anti-ali ii php4 4:4.3.10-16 server-side, HTML-embedded scripti ii php4-gd 4:4.3.10-16 GD module for php4 ii php4-mysql 4:4.3.10-16 MySQL module for php4 ii php4-pgsql 3:4.3.10-4 PostgreSQL module for php4 ii wget 1.9.1-12retrieves files from the web ii wwwconfig-common 0.0.43 Debian web auto configuration -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. After I gave up on isnatlling debian that day, the grub boot manager missed some files of the deleted kubuntu installation. To repair that, I installed kubuntu again and encountered no problems. Unfortunately, I didn't think about storing the /var/log/syslog anywhere. But I'm not entirely sure, whether I would be able to do this, as my system has no floppy and the emergency shell is quite limited. Um, are you sure that there aren't any public functions in libpng to achieve the same? On a sid box I already have the version of sudo including the fix (1.6.8p12-1), but I'm unable to reproduce the behaviour you are reporting, thus I'm tagging the bug as unreproducible. Details of my tests follow. I tried both running sudo -s (as root) and sudo vim (as a user who has the permission to run /usr/bin/vim via sudo). In the former case $HOME is set correctly to /root, in the latter case vim starts properly without exhibiting any of the problems you reported. I can confirm this behaviour. Indeed, the variable HOME is unset. This can be fixed in /etc/sudoers by setting the 'always_set_home' flag or by running sudo with the -H option. sudo bug #203874 requests this option in the default sudoers file, but there was no answer from the sudo maintainer. I doubt think this bug can/should be fixed in the vim package. I agree with that, having $HOME unset is a big problem for too many packages, and we discussed with Bram (vim's author), and we agreed that autodetecting user's home using Unix calls is not a good idea, because unsetting HOME is a common method to make program not source their DOTFILES e.g. (or not search for them when you have a NFS problem). So I'd say this bug has to be reassigned to sudo. -- ·O· Pierre Habouzit ··O[EMAIL PROTECTED] OOOhttp://www.madism.org pgp7Axwca6wxH.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#350108: glabels: Template designer does not report errors when writing the template
Package: glabels Version: 2.1.2-3 Severity: normal Hi! I started using the template designer to create some templates that are not commercial. I want to print to plain paper and cut the labels using scissors. I created the first template using # for Brand/Manufacturer and # as Part number (because they dont apply but are required). The first template was created nicely. For the second template I again used # for Brand/Manufacturer and # as Part number and continued using the druid. No error was reported but the template was not available. Problem is: The data entered in Brand/Manufacturer and Part number are directly used to build the filename. The resulting filename was in the second template the same as in the first template. Bug #1: Glabels does not report that a file of that name already exists and that it could not save the template. Because the data entered in Brand/Manufacturer and Part number are directly used to build the filename this leads to the next Bug: Bug #2: When using a slash / inside Brand/Manufacturer or Part number the template is not created because of an IO error. This is only printed on the console but not reported to the user: I/O error : No such file or directory LibGlabels-Message: Problem saving xml file. Bug#350044: When printing, gimp looks up filenames it has no business looking at
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 tags 350044 + wontfix thanks [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Debian Bug Tracking System) writes: Processing commands for [EMAIL PROTECTED]: reassign 350044 gimp-print Bug#350044: When printing, gimp looks up filenames it has no business looking at Bug reassigned from package `gimp' to `gimp-print'. The reason that it's doing this is the creation of two GtkFileSelection dialogues on startup, which are presumably doing a directory scan behind the scenes. These are used for print-to-file and PPD selection. See file_browser and ppd_browser in src/gutenprintui2/panel.c. This was probably done for performance reasons (they are reused rather than recreated), and also due to the poor structure of the code. This won't be fixable for version 5.0, because the UI code is an inpenetrable mess (due to needing to keep compatibility with GTK+-1.2), which I expect to rework significantly in the next development series as soon as we ditch GTK+-1.2 compatibility. Bug#350094: FTBFS: dh_testdir: I have no package to build
Rene Engelhard ha scritto: Seems that they are building it on i386, amd64 and powerpc. Will keep asking on irc, but that will require some time... Still, I'd need to try the build out on a amd64. And since I don't have a amd64 myself.. And as bcm43xx needs ieee80211softmac installed this could take some time If it's just building I can do it, but I have no hardware to test the driver on. As for ieee80211softmac, 'they' compile it for amd64 as well. All the best, Roberto -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For a list of the encoders supported, that's also in the man page. It says in the first paragraph: Jack works with several encoders, namely oggenc, flac, lame, gogo, bladeenc, l3enc, mp3enc and xing. As far as I know, the only ones on that list included in debian are flac and oggenc. I am unaware of any way to make jack tell you which encoders it thinks it can find the binaries for. Bug#349938: Encoding of manpages
Wow, either that's a encoding disaster, or I'm not doing something right. First of all, I cannot say that the files you sent are in UTF-8, How should I say this... The text is not in Korean at all. It uses letters that are legal in a Korean encoding, but the result is completely unintelligible. I guess an analogy would be easier. French uses letters like a, h, or ç, right? But what if the h's are changed into a's and a's into ç? Still valid to the computer, but not to humans. I attached the manpage files installed in my system. They are encoding in EUC-KR, and display just fine. They might be a bit dated, though. Could anyone help me in investigating this problem? 2006/1/26, Nicolas François [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hello, In rpm 4.4.1-5, the Korean man pages are encoded in UTF-8. Can you check if they are displayed correctly in a Korean environment. IMO, they should be encoded in EUC-KR, however iconv fails to recode the rpm man page to EUC-KR. If the man page must be recoded, can anybody check why iconv is failing, and submit a patch for the rpm.8 and rpm2cpio.8 man page. Bug#346215: a kill -TERM causes the EXIT trap to be executed

I know, but if it is not a POSIX requirement, it is annoying to break the Bourne sh compatibility. and, IMHO, is not POSIX-compliant (see the explanations in the script below). Other shells, such as dash, ksh and zsh are not affected by this problem. ksh handles this the same way as bash. Perhaps you tested with pdksh? OK, here are my latest tests: # Results on Linux/x86 (Debian): # Shell Version pterm executed? # --- # bash3.1.5(1)yes # sh (bash) yes # dash0.5.3 no # ksh93 1993-12-28 yes # mkshR25 no # pdksh 5.2.14 no # zsh 4.3.0-dev-2 no # # Under other systems: # OS / Shell pterm executed? # --- # SunOS 5.7 yes (/usr/xpg4/bin/sh) # OSF1 4.0yes (/usr/bin/posix/sh) # FreeBSD 5.4 (=dash) no # NetBSD 3.0 (=dash) no # HP-UX B.11.11 yes Note: I know that dash is not POSIX yet. With the following script, sh trapexitbug (under Linux) and bash trapexitbug cause the EXIT trap to be executed. It has been a long time POSIX shell requirement that the EXIT trap is executed upon shell exit regardless of why that shell exited. This is intentional. Does anyone has some *clear* reference about that? After re-reading some parts of POSIX, it appears that it is not clear. POSIX says that the exit utility causes the trap on EXIT to be executed before the shell terminates (except when the exit utility is invoked in that trap itself). But it doesn't seem to say more. Also concerning the regardless of why that shell exited, the EXIT trap cannot be called if the shell terminates due to a SIGKILL. From this point of view, what you said cannot be completely correct. # http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/signal.h.html # says: # SIGTERM T Termination signal. # and for T: # Abnormal termination of the process. The process is terminated # with all the consequences of _exit() except that the status made # available to wait() and waitpid() indicates abnormal termination # by the specified signal. # # http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/functions/_exit.html says: # The _Exit() [CX] and _exit() functions shall not call functions # registered with atexit() nor any registered signal handlers. That is the default action. But once you set an EXIT trap you change the default action to the one specified in the trap. So those requirements no longer apply. This is the default action for SIGTERM. But concerning _exit, I haven't seen that it was a default action. Could you give more details or do you have a precise reference? A last point: If POSIX allows the current behavior, when should the signal be taken into account? I give an example below to make my question clearer: pterm() { trap 0 echo pterm: $foo } trap pterm 0 echo PID = $$ while true; do read foo; printf %s\n $foo; done Currently, the TERM signal interrupts the read built-in. But what if $foo was being modified when the signal occurs? -- Vincent Lefèvre [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Web: http://www.vinc17.org/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.org/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / SPACES project at LORIA

Does this, or the new Creative Commons license, also apply to older versions, in particular to the version included in teTeX 3.0? In this case we (Debian) could distribute the ConTeXt documentation in our non-free section (still non-free because we don't have the sources currently). And I wouldn't like to use the new version's documentation (with its CC license) and bundle it with the ConTeXt version in teTeX 3.0, since that would cause confusion. That's why I specifically ask whether this applies to the old version, too. Regards, Frank -- Frank Küster Single Molecule Spectroscopy, Protein Folding @ Inst. f. Biochemie, Univ.
