Bug#546680: man-db: start-stop-daemon: Unable to alter IO priority to mask 24583 (Operation not permitted)
On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 11:05:16AM +1000, Daniel Pittman wrote: G'day. I don't know if this is correctly a man-db bug, or a dpkg bug: Since man-db has started using start-stop-daemon in the daily and weekly cron.d scripts it has been failing to run inside the OpenVZ containers I use to provide virtual machines for a bunch of services. Specifically, this failure: /etc/cron.daily/man-db: start-stop-daemon: Unable to alter IO priority to mask 24583 (Operation not permitted) run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/man-db exited with return code 2 I can sort of understand why start-stop-daemon feels that it ought to do what was asked for. However, I must say that it's awfully inconvenient for each client package to have to work around this kind of thing; I've run across it in man-db and openssh-server so far. dpkg folks, what do you think about silently ignoring EPERM here? The second line is no great surprise: within the virtual environment (VE) access to various kernel level features, including setting your own I/O priority, is deliberately restricted. (For the record I think it's slightly silly for them to restrict the ability to *lower* I/O priority.) Having the man-db nightly processes run with a lower I/O priority is nice, but at this point it doesn't run them at all inside the VE because of this invocation. It would be good to consider that a non-fatal error. I notice, in fact, that man-db already tries to work around the free 'vserver' environment. If you want to continue to do that I suggest either using the 'virt-what' tool, which makes it a problem for someone /else/ to identify every new VM type out there, or to make the failure to set an I/O scheduler non-fatal. I don't really want to drag a new package into the base system even if it is small; and presumably I would have to keep track of which kinds of VMs permit changing I/O priority. However, to detect running inside an OpenVZ VE you can check for /proc/user_beancounters (deprecated, but present), or /proc/vz/{veinfo,vestat} existing. Determining the different between the hardware node, which can set I/O priority, and the VE, which can't, is best done by checking for the absence of /proc/vz/version, I think. virt-what appears to use [ -d /proc/vz -a ! -d /proc/bc ] for this. I'll do that for now, I think. Thanks, -- Colin Watson [cjwat...@debian.org] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#548190: xz-utils: --force not compatible with gzip and bzip2
Package: xz-utils Version: 4.999.8beta-1 Severity: normal Xz does not implement a very useful feature found in gzip and bzip2 when using the --force option. This is the relevant bzip2 doc: bzip2 normally declines to decompress files which don't have the correct magic header bytes. If forced (-f), however, it will pass such files through unmodified. This is how GNU gzip behaves. As an example of how this could be useful, here is a pipeline that decompresses stdin be it compressed with gzip or bzip2, and leaves it untopuched if it is not compressed: bzip2 -cdfq | gzip -cdfq However, extending it to also decompress xz fails: bzip2 -cdfq | xz -cdfq | gzip -cdfq because xz does not let an unrecognised file pass through. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'testing-proposed-updates') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xz-utils depends on: ii libc6 2.9-25GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii liblzma0 4.999.8beta-1 high compression-ratio compression xz-utils recommends no packages. xz-utils suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. This approach was provided by Karl Chen in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=511771. I'm not familiar with these virtualisation systems so I probably didn't even realise that vserver and OpenVZ weren't the same thing. Can you provide an authoritative way to detect that we're in a vserver container, preferably with a reference? I also wonder, perhaps it would be better to instead ask for having start-stop-daemon hush nice/ionice messages when -q is given, as that's more of an informative message rather than a real error. Problem might be, that the Class name seems to have been renamed to TarArchiveInputStream which breaks dependend packages. Yes, thats a problem. Modules are the most unreliable way ;-) Anyway. What should then happen? Then the system clock should be set from the hardware clock in hwclockfirst.sh which is called before checkroot.sh, independently from any udev calls. Which means it wont happen. I'm doing now the opposite, as it respects more the way things were done before. So this situation is only temporary, if your package is rebuilt against the latest version of maven-repo-helper, then this problem should not appear. Bug#505815: cdrbq: diff for NMU version 1.23-1.1
tags 505815 + patch pending thanks Dear maintainer, I've prepared an NMU for cdrbq (versioned as 1.23-1.1) and uploaded it to DELAYED/2, according to devref §5.11.1. The patch adds a (non-OR-ed) dependency on the wish virtual package. I've kept the other side of the original OR-ed dependency (tcl), but I've the impression that it is not needed anymore. tcl ships only a binary used by toc2cue, but that executable it not shipped in the Debian package. Bug#419209: lvm2: Hangs during snapshot creation
Another me-too: We have been hit by what I believe is this bug. We use LVM2 on top of MD (RAID1) and take snapshots of logical volumes for backup. After a recent long-overdue upgrade to lenny, the very first backup of /home (residing on its own logical volume) hung during snapshot creation. Since the filesystem is xfs which has to be frozen during snapshot creation, the whole system became unstable. Processes remained blocked even after xfs was unfrozen, and could not be killed. The only option was to hard-reset the box. Perhaps xfs freezing (why is it necessary on a journaled filesystem anyway?!) contributed to the damage. Nevertheless, snapshot creation hang is a real problem, and has nothing to do with LVM2 deadlocking itself when backing up configuration to /var. Also, it never happened in 2.6.18 back in etch. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#548214: abby: should use sane defaults
Package: abby Version: 0.4.3-1 Severity: minor When launched, abby presents the user with an interactive dialog asking for the locations of the cclive/clive binaries. This is unnecessary; the package depends on cclive | clive, so it should simply try cclive (wherever that is on my $PATH), and fall back on clive (ditto) if cclive isn't available. Likewise, if I cd to down/here/where/my/videos/go and invoke abby, it's annoying to need to tell it I want to store the downloads in /home/jbr/down/here/where/my/videos/go when my $PWD already provides a perfectly good default (falling back on $HOME if not available). If you don't want to do that, there's the alternative of following 'http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec-latest.html'. By all means allow these defaults to be overridden by environmental variables or config-file settings or Preferences menu-items, but please do not turn downloading videos into a quiz on the FHS. Hi Justin, I'm not able to reproduce the behavior when I use hostnames that resolve. The issue appears to be that gethostbyname() fails for one or more the names given. Can you ssh to each of the hosts in your test case, and can you provide some detail on how the host names are being resolved by your system? Duncan, would it be reasonable to check to see if gethostbyname($host) is defined, and if not, simply return $host? Thank you, Tony Hi, It must have been one of the hosts was typo'd-- it is working now. But in the past and now I maintain lists with cssh that I login to and if one of the hosts has been decomissioned, it will abort the entire cssh because of it, where before it would try to open it and if it fails, the window would close or not open. Features: * Graphical reports * Several tabs to help you organize your work * Infinite undo/redo (even after the file was closed) * Instant filtering on operations and reports * Infinite categories levels * Mass update of operations * Scheduled operations * Track refund of your expenses * Powerful Search and Process functions Skrooge is already present in Ubuntu so the initial Debian packaging may be easier. Bug#419948: librrds-perl: Information about affected platform
Hi, On Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 03:10:03PM +0200, Carl Fürstenberg wrote: Current platform is one of the affected, it's an 170MHz ARM without FPU. old munin was able to create graphs in under minutes, while current munin takes one hour around to create one single graph. I suspect the reason the CPU lacks PFU might be a reason for the decline in speed. (the old kernel is because the kernel is located in flash, had to forwardport udev). Yeah - that's quite likely. [Florian Schlichting] oh, they do run fine here as well, they just consume *a lot* more cpu time than they did on sarge Okay, so it seems we've got a rather major speed-down in rrdgraph Sarge → Etch (RRDtool 1.0 → 1.2) and another one Etch → Lenny (RRDtool 1.2 → 1.3). In the former case, RRDtool switched from using libgd to libart for doing the graphing, in the latter case, they switched to libcairo (and libpango). I'm pretty sure, the speed-down is related to that. In the course of the 1.3.x releases some optimizations have been applied which improved the effect a bit but there still is a notable speed-down. Anyway, frankly, I've got no idea what to do about that. I suppose, some more optimizations might be done but I also suppose that some (probably most) of the speed-down is due to differences in how those libraries work. So, the only way I can think of to fix that is to support multiple graphing backends. I'm not really sure if that's worth the efforts, though. If you think, that's the way to go, we could turn this into a wishlist bug, else, imho, marking it wontfix would be the way to go. Any other suggestions / comments? Sorry, that was a typo, pcibackend.hide is in _dom0_ menu.lst and swiotlb=force is now also set in _dom0_. For the nth time: *** swiotlb=force is needed on the _domU_ command line *** That means either you are using pygrub and it should be in menu.lst _inside_the_guest_ or you need to add 'extras=swiotlb=force' to your domU configuration. in the _domU_ config is this [ ... ] vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3E:39:2D:0A' ] pci= [ ':03:05.0', ':03:06.0', ':03:07.0' ] [ ... ] I will return when the server is returned to live after reboot later today. --- Med Venlig Hilsen / Best regards Henrik Dige Semark -- Ian Campbell Current Noise: Nine Inch Nails - I Do Not Want This I've always considered statesmen to be more expendable than soldiers. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#548222: gource: does not show authors with Japanese characters in the name
Package: gource Version: 0.12-1 Severity: normal Tags: l10n When I set my git user.name to a string containing Japanese characters and make some commits, gource only shows boxes where the Japanese characters should be. I imagine the same will occur for all other Unicode characters not yet present in ttf-unifont. I imagine the same will occur for filenames with Unicode characters not yet present in ttf-unifont. The problem is that FTGL does not yet support using fontconfig to fall back to other fonts for characters not in the default font. You could ask upstream to add a QuesoGLC (libglc-dev in Debian) font rendering backend so that the font renderer will fall back on other available fonts for characters not in the default font. An example of such a backend can be found in Chromium B.S.U. Please note that Chromium is not GPL licensed so you cannot just lift the code from Chromium. More info about this option is here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-games/2009/08/msg00029.html Another option might be to use Pango and Cairo with an OpenGL backend, but I don't have an example for that, more info here: http://cairographics.org/OpenGL/ -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (600, 'unstable'), (550, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-2-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages gource depends on: ii libc62.9-25 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libftgl2 2.1.3~rc5-2 library to render text in OpenGL u ii libgcc1 1:4.4.1-1 GCC support library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1] 7.5.1-1 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa [libglu1] 7.5.1-1 The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii libpcre3 7.8-2 Perl 5 Compatible Regular Expressi ii libsdl-image1.2 1.2.7-2 image loading library for Simple D ii libsdl1.2debian 1.2.13-4+b1 Simple DirectMedia Layer ii libstdc++6 4.4.1-1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii ttf-freefont 20090104-4 Freefont Serif, Sans and Mono True -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
