Bug#630114: ntfs-3g: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review
Package: ntfs-3g Version: N/A Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Debian maintainer, On Monday, May 23, 2011, I notified you of the beginning of a review process concerning debconf templates for ntfs-3g. The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates, and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report. Please review the suggested changes, and if you have any objections, let me know in the next 3 days. However, please try to avoid uploading ntfs-3g with these changes right now. The second phase of this process will begin on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, when I will coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates. The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will receive an updated PO file for their language. Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to the debian-i18n mailing list. Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with. The call for translation updates and new translations will run until about Tuesday, July 05, 2011. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of course, other changes are safe. Please note that this is an approximative delay, which depends on my own availability to process this work and is influenced by the fact that I simultaneously work on many packages. Around Wednesday, July 06, 2011, I will contact you again and will send a final patch summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates, updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations). Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.39-1-686-pae (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash --- ntfs-3g.old/debian/ntfs-3g.templates2011-05-22 12:00:44.195872156 +0200 +++ ntfs-3g/debian/ntfs-3g.templates2011-06-11 08:14:48.470296888 +0200 @@ -1,9 +1,18 @@ +# These templates have been reviewed by the debian-l10n-english +# team +# +# If modifications/additions/rewording are needed, please ask +# debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org for advice. +# +# Even minor modifications require translation updates and such +# changes should be coordinated with translators and reviewers. + Template: ntfs-3g/setuid-root Type: boolean Default: false -_Description: Should NTFS-3G be installed 'setuid root'? +_Description: Should NTFS-3G be installed setuid root? Bug#630115: Please add Debian CD signing key.
Package: debian-archive-keyring Severity: wishlist Please add current Debian CD signing key, and make policy of including keys that are used for signing official Debian CDs. Authenticity of Debian CD signing keys should be verified by Release team before including in debian-archive-keyring package. I set this issue as wishlist because it is rather a feature request than error, however I consider this more important than standard wishlist item. Rationale: Currently people who don't have good enough trust path to Debian CD signing key, cant easily verify authenticity of new Debian CDs. Because apt verifies authenticity of packages before installation, and its assumed that keys in package debian-archive-keyring are handled carefully by the Release Team, therefore it should be a secure chain of trust for those who already have a trusted enough older Debian installation. Many users are not able to establish trust chain to Debian CD signing key trough the web of trust, and this is not trivial Similar issues have been raised before: http://lists.debian.org/debian-security/2011/01/msg2.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/03/msg01179.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/03/msg01531.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-security/2011/01/msg00118.html http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17t=62272 http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/03/msg00434.html Some of them are trying to solve problem of initial trust path to Debian, which is not what suggested change is meant to fix. This bug report is about those who already overcome chicken-egg problem (which means that they have trusted enough computer with older Debian). However this change will also provide similar trust path from Ubuntu to Debian, because Ubuntu also contains debian-archive-keyring package. It may be worth mentioning that Ubuntu has similar solution. The Ubuntu CD signing key is included in the ubuntu-archive-keyring package. This package is Ubuntu's equivalent of debian-archive-keyring (it also contains keys for Apt). Trust chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Eliminating unneeded nodes decreases chances of compromising trust chain. Therefore its better to get the key in question directly from trusted medium, than to rely on a chain of signatures. There are also some issues with GnuPG that complicate relying on the web of trust: 1.It seems that there is no way of disabling too weak hash algorithms for web of trust calculations. This kind of attack seams reasonable, especially that large part of signed material (public key) is a random number, which makes it easier to forge valid key with identical hash as the original one, allowing reattachment of signatures from original key to the forged one. While for now it may not be a big issue (which is not necessary true *) , it doesn't allow user to set his own policy regarding level of confidence in web of trust certifications. *http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/statement.html, http://www.debian-administration.org/users/dkg/weblog/48 2. Manual checking of signatures on Debian CD Signing Key is also not a good option. The--check-sigs command do not check if keys that issued signatures are not revoked. This is known to GnuPG developers and is marked as wontfix (https://bugs.g10code.com/gnupg/issue910). Therefore manual checking of signatures on a key using the --check-sigs command requires that user also manually check if each key that signed the one in question, is not revoked. This command also do not hide revoked signatures. Asimmetric algo is displayed if the option --with-colons is used, which is not a good format for humans to read. Hash algo propably could be displayed if --list-option show-sig-subpackets option is also used, however this output is even worse for human readers, and using another tool like kspsig is also not convenient (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=594907). Those issues are additional burden for user and make this process time consuming and error-prone. If proposed changes will be applied, the procedure to verify authenticity of files containing cryptographic hashes of debian CD images will be easier, and weaknesses mentioned above will be avoided. I have written two different verification procedures for Debian CDs. Those may be of use for some people and it may be good to put them at http://www.debian.org/CD/verify after the Debian CD signing key is added to this package. Those procedures are only examples, and there are other possible variations. I'm assuming that the files with cryptographic hashes, signature files, and iso images are located in the current directory, and that debian-archive-keyring package is already installed/upgraded. It is also a good idea to do the verification on a separate user account with empty keyring, to avoid the possibility of having malicious cd signing key existing in the local keyring. The malicious key could be accidentally downloaded from manipulated keyserver, and may be

Bug#621833: System user handling in packages: status of discussion
On Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 11:00:14 +0100, Roger Leigh wrote: Would lockuser need to be in the adduser package? Given that adduser is only priority:important, it's not guaranteed to be present when postrm is run, so the operation could fail. Maybe passwd is a better place for it, given that it contains useradd etc., and is priority:required. Wouldn't lockuser be called on package removal, instead of purge? In which case a dependency on adduser would cover it? Cheers, Julien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I'll try to find some time as I'm really excited about seeing you tackling the problem (I've read your post from June 2nd and it looked good to me), but unfortunatly my typing time is limited atm and I have tons of other things (preparing debconf11, trying to get debian edu squeeze out) to do atm :/ That said, hacking on piuparts is a good way to break out from my routines, so this might happen earlier than I assume now... ;) cheers, Holger -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#630119: kde vs. gnome
Hi, I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I found out the following: * in KDE4 miro4 only starts up from Autostart, quitting it and starting it from kmenu or the shell segfaults every time * after installing gnome-desktop I can start and quit miro4 in Gnome as often as I like So maybe it is a race condition of something loaded after miro in kde, but I started all software that runs in kde (amarok, sylpheed, skype, opera) in gnome and miro still worked. Bug#627968: [Build-common-hackers] Bug#627968: Commenting the Package stanza in the control file
I actually used the documentation in a pdf format. I can't find the specific file I used before. Now I found http://build-common.alioth.debian.org/cdbs-doc.html#basic-settings. Can't one set DEB_PACKAGES,and all the other variables, the way I tried to? I did notice that, in general, the variables should be set after the rule fragments are included. Even though the patch in 627968 set them before the fragments inclusion, I did try the other order too. - Original Message From: Jonas Smedegaard d...@jones.dk Perhaps try elaborate more on the documentation you've interpreted this way, so we can figure out what might need improving. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. In which case a dependency on adduser would cover it? I guess since you're not removing the user after any files they owned are purged (which necessitates doing it in at purge) then doing it in at remove time is just fine. I'm a bit confused: camcontrol is just used for informational candy. You can check if it works by running it manually to determine e.g. size of /dev/ad0, but it's not related to your grub-probe problem. Yes, Bug#612128 was not about camcontrol, despite the misleading title. I pointed to it to mention that I used 1.98+20100804-14 in the past and it worked fine. grub-probe in squeeze doesn't use libgeom, it was introduced in this commit: Yes, that's what I just said. :) If it's a regression, it could be a bug in GRUB or maybe it's a silent ABI bump (I'd check if a GRUB rebuild helps). As I mentioned, after downgrading libgeom0 to 8.1-5, everything works fine. Upgrading libgeom0 to 8.2-2 and running dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc reproduces the problem again. Why would a GRUB rebuild help? My previous question about whether this is reproducible on other people's machines was not rhetorical. It would be a new symptom, which could help me in investigating. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? But those might have not made into the squeeze kernel. BTW, does this issue happen only on heavy load? Or is it triggered also on moderate load? I'm sure the moment when this issue occurs, the machine is completely unresponsive. No, it happens only on heavy load, the storage server performs also several other functions other than iscsi target, one of these is monitoring all the virtual machines with nagios and munin: munin updates run every 5 minutes with a lot of data written to disk, this has never been a problem. The only situation that triggers the problem is while performing an operation like dd or a file system check that is really i/o intensive on the storage server. The second time I experienced the problem I was connected with ssh to the system during the dd watching the log files: i saw real time the abort messages and I was able to stop the dd and react to the failure (restart cluster nodes, check virtual machines, etc.), this just to say that it was not necessary to restart the iscsi target and that the system was not unresponsive. Bug#630146: glusterfs: unused python-distutils.mk
Source: glusterfs Version: 3.2.0-1 You include /usr/share/cdbs/1/class/python-distutils.mk, which is a bit odd, because your package doesn't use distutils. You probably want to: 1) Set either DEB_PYTHON_SYSTEM, or if you want to use dh_python2, set DEB_PYTHON2_MODULE_PACKAGES. 2) Set DEB_PYTHON_PRIVATE_MODULES_DIRS. (Python helpers normally look only into /usr/{share,lib}{,/games}/binarypackagename) 3) Include python-module.mk instead of python-distutils.mk. -- Jakub Wilk -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#578750: [RFP] Kmid2 (again)
Hi Valerio, You said: I fear that either the qt-kde debian team will refuse my kmid package anyway or that I might encounter problems with upstream author. Sorry for the cross-posting. I am the upstream author, and somehow I've found your message in the mailing list archives. I'm answering your message because you deserve to know the facts, and mitigate your fear. I also have the right to defend my reputation, and fight against any misinformation, propaganda or innuendo against me coming from the IRC channels and mailing lists. I can't talk about that theory of a mafia actively blocking Kmid, but I positively assure you that I am not a monster. Here are the facts. More than one year ago, in May/2010, Leandro (along with his sponsor Ana Guerrero) was trying to package my Drumstick libraries for Debian, because this package is required by Kmid2 (and by my other programs: Kmidimon and Kmetronome, already in Debian). They found that Drumstick included a dozen utility programs without the corresponding man pages, which are required by Debian standards, so they asked me to write the man pages. I've done so, committed the man pages to the SVN repository and sent him a patch containing the requested man pages and build system changes. Instead of applying this patch to his package, he answered me that the Drumstick and Kmid2 Debian packages were postponed until a future release of Drumstick that included the man pages, giving me the argument that he works in Debian as a volunteer, without time to waste processing patches. I was shocked by this argument because I'm also a volunteer. I'm not paid for writing Kmid2 or any of my other Linux programs. My relationship with them was seriously compromised, and any future collaboration between down and upstream was doubtful, with these precedents. I want to say that I'm in very good relationship with other Debian developers: Adrian, Free, Alessio, Arnout and Mehdi. I thank you for your work with my programs, especially for the contributions that you made and sent upstream. Debian is now the only major distribution not including Kmid2. For your convenience, in Ubuntu you can find Kmid2 in these PPA's: https://launchpad.net/~ferramroberto/+archive/testing/+build/1920542 https://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-team/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=kmid2 Regards, Pedro -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#629442: [Pkg-iscsi-maintainers] Bug#629442: iscsitarget: ietd gives iscsi_trgt: Abort Task errors on high disk load and iscsi connections are dropped
On 06/11/2011 05:45 PM, Massimiliano Ferrero wrote: No, it happens only on heavy load, the storage server performs also several other functions other than iscsi target, one of these is monitoring all the virtual machines with nagios and munin: munin updates run every 5 minutes with a lot of data written to disk, this has never been a problem. I will update the bug as soon as I can test it on another machine. I'm afraid this won't be an easy bug to root cause. But let's give it a shot. Next time, when you try to test/re-create the bug, capture dstat output. Bug#630148: Failure to clean up resources in temporary dir
Package: konqueror Version: 4:4.4.5-3 Note up front: This is probably not only a problem with konqueror but also with other KDE parts, but it hit me most with konqueror. The problem is that konqueror caches files in /var/tmp/ from webbrowsing, which are never cleaned up. I recently removed a folder /var/tmp/kdecache- uli/http which took up 1.5GiB(!) of space there. Note that rebooting or anything like that doesn't help, these files are never cleaned up AFAICT. Two wishes here: 1. If applications cache things, they also need to clean up their cache. 2. If it is not the applications, the surrounding system itself should clean up regularly. Thank you! Bug#627613: Mistaken aliasing of $ somewhere in the bowels of Perl

I have to say that I find this quite a surprising explanation, but after having read it I can see what's going on. However I think these issues should be better explained in the documentation. As far as I can see it's not mentioned in perltrap, perlop, perlsyn or perldata. perldata does have some discussion of lists of lvalues which if you squint does sort of imply the consequence we see here but it's not explicit and not clear. [...] 1. Arguably this behaviour is wrong when the = operator is involved. Since lists including = operators are not generally intended for use as lvalues, but rather as initialisers. But that's probably best dealt with as a serparate issue. Please note that the fat comma operator '=' is just syntactical sugar and can be used for lvalues as well. I doubt upstream wants lists to behave differently depending on whether a regular comma or a fat one was used. I would argue that the real problem here is unexpected aliasing. The correct fix is be to introduce language in the discussion of list construction in perldata(1) which explains about the delayed dereferencing, and warns about unexpected aliasing. It could usefully be mentioned in perltrap(1) too. Do you agree ? I agree that the documentation could be more explicit about this, and your suggestions sound sane (apart from point 1, as commented above.) However, I don't see much value in having us (the perl Debian maintainers) as a proxy here. Please discuss this upstream. I have to say, though, that upstream strongly prefers documentation patches over wishlist bugs for documentation changes. -- Niko Tyni nt...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#630149: perlembed.pod and perlmodinstall.pod contain invariant sections
Package: perl Version: 5.12.3-7 On Tue, May 24, 2011 at 11:50:24AM +0200, Alexander Reichle-Schmehl wrote: Am 21.05.2011 08:37, schrieb Niko Tyni: I'm a bit uneasy with the licensing of pod/perlembed.pod pod/perlmodinstall.pod which seems to imply that the document title (and, less importantly, author information) is an invariant section that can't be modified. Is this something that needs to be fixed? Please note that it's been like this since at least 1998, so this is not a regression. Permission is granted to copy and distribute modified versions of this documentation under the conditions for verbatim copying, provided also that they are marked clearly as modified versions, that the authors' names and title are unchanged (though subtitles and additional authors' names may be added), and that the entire resulting derived work is distributed under the terms of a permission notice identical to this one. Hmmm... I don't think the restriction of the author is a problematic; it's quite similar to restrictions regarding license header and a like. However, the title restriction is different, and does has practical affects (e.g. when translating a document). Could you please ask upstream, to drop that restriction? We don't consider it a big problem (hence I accepted it), but it would be nice to be solved, though. Bug#630152: dbus: tests disabled because they fail if the user has no home directory
Source: dbus Version: 1.4.12-2 Severity: minor Some of the regression tests built by dbus = 1.4.12 use TCP connections. These tests want to write to the user's home directory (using getent passwd or equivalent, ignoring $HOME), so they fail or time out on the buildds, leading to FTBFS of 1.4.12-1 and 1.5.4-1 on most architectures. I've disabled running the tests during build, but it would be better if we could enable them. We may need to patch libdbus to either believe $HOME, or have a new $DBUS_HOME or something, analogous to a patch we already apply to GLib.
