Bug#657010: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#657010: [login] 'su' should be PIE
Hello, On Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 09:06:38PM +0200, Török Edwin wrote: PIE refers to -fPIE from GCC of course. First, let me thank you for your report, Edwin. Using that flag doesn't completely prevent the exploit though. How unfortunate, Here is a good summary and discussions: https://lwn.net/Articles/476684/ References I could find indicate an issue in the Linux kernel handling of /proc/pid/mem Well, in vanilla grsec you'll not even see /proc/pid of the process which is running as different user (euid). This made it inconvenient for me to use Debian standard pon/poff scripts and I hacked my own grsec to allow seeing /proc/pid for the processes that run with ruid == my-uid too (so I'd be vulnerable if my kernel was 2.6.39 AFAIU). Apparently packages should adopt hardening flags for wheezy: http://wiki.debian.org/Hardening#State_of_implementation Well, what I see is someome (Linus?) did a major fuckup in Linux kernel 2.6.39 enabling the exploit in the first place. Then the said fuckup was discovered, but all went silent until a guy posts working exploit code on the Internet. Now, _we_ are requiered to compile with -fPIE to make exploiting harder (presumably). But then I see this post from the person I trust more than Linus or Cox taken together: Posted Jan 23, 2012 15:49 UTC (Mon) by PaXTeam (subscriber, #24616) [Link] Posted Jan 23, 2012 15:10 UTC (Mon) by corbet (editor, #1) [Link] As it happens, Fedora's su is dynamically linked, so it's probably not vulnerable to this particular exploit anyway (though the kernel vulnerability remains and may be exploitable via some other path). the exploit can take the target address as argument, it's a trivial one-liner to brute force it... and the other one: Posted Jan 23, 2012 17:20 UTC (Mon) by PaXTeam (subscriber, #24616) [Link] i understand you're excited but please stick to the facts... ASLR won't make exploitation 'much harder' given the few bits one has to brutefoce, call it a blink of an eye. if you have something like grsecurity's brute force detection and prevention feature then you can at least bound the probability of success (but still not make it 0, and also let's not forget about potential memory leaks one could make use of to avoid brute forcing in the first place although for this particular vulnerability it's very hard to imagine a situation where such leaks could be used by the exploit given how the lseek has to happen before the suid address space even exists). second, mem_write makes use of the same accessor underneath as ptrace and can therefore write to memory mapped as read-only (whether that capability was intended or not is another question and perhaps a bug itself yet to be fixed). so RELRO/etc won't do anything to prevent this vulnerability from getting exploited. case in point, this exploit modifies the .plt section itself that is mapped as read-only already. i will note again that under grsecurity the technique used in this exploit won't work because PaX prevents said accessor from modifying executable (and hence read-only) mappings, one would need a ret2libc style exploit and most likely brute force (which is then limited by the previously mentioned feature). So do as you see fit, it's Debian after all. Debian can force all its maintainers to comply and build everything with -fPIE as it pleases. IMO this will prevent script kiddies only, and only until nextgen mempodipper appears. Then we have pwned CAs and alike. -- With best regards, xrgtn -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#656613: News?
Hi, Any news, when it will be fixed? Thanks, Anton Terman.
Bug#657092: [php-maint] Processed: reassign 657092 to php5-sqlite ...
Hi, For php5-sqlite maintainer: Roundcube needs SQLite 2 support. It does not support SQLite 3. Is it possible to add back SQLite support in php5-sqlite? sorry, but not a chance. sqlite(2) is 6 years overdue and unmaintained upstream. And it is my opinion it should be removed from wheezy completely and php5-sqlite was one of the obstacles. Also we will ship php5-5.4.x in wheezy where upstream had removed sqlite extension as well. So it doesn't really make sense to I could add Breaks: roundcube header to the php5-sqlite package, but I would need a version number where it will be fixed, so I can add versioned dependency. Roundcube has to deal with the fact it's using 6 years old unmaintained code. I am sorry I cannot help you, but we just could not drag old code just because few stuborn reverse dependencies. Bug#598551: /usr/sbin/pppd: updetach option causes Connection terminated
The bug does not appear in original pppd code. It is caused by always_setsid patch. With this patch, setsid() function is invoked before opening modem (tty) device. If the setsid() succeeds, pppd process is losing their controlling tty and then the opened modem device becomes a controlling tty of the pppd. This causes that when the parent dies, HUP signal is sent to all children processes - in particular to the child process communicating via modem. The setsid() function fails when pppd is invoked directly from shell. It succeeds when is invoked e.g. from a shell script. If sedsid() fails, HUP signal is not sent to children when parent dies because the opened modem device does not become the controlling tty. This explains behavior described by David (Message #27). As I understand, the always_setsid patch was added to prevent from kill of parent processes when a signal is delivered to pppd. But, as I see in the original pppd code, the problem should not appear. How old is the patch? Maybe the problem was fixed in original code some time ago, and the patch is not needed? Bug#657116: libtar: FTBFS on hurd-i386
Source: libtar Version: 1.2.11-8 Severity: important Tags: patch User: debian-h...@lists.debian.org Usertags: hurd Hi, This patch solves the build problems for GNU/Hurd due to MAXPATHLEN issues. The solution is to make dynamic string allocations instead of using fixed length buffers. The functions mkdirhier, basename and dirname have all been checked with separate test programs on Linux and Hurd and with valgrind on Linux without problems. Furthermore, parts of the the code has been reviewed by GN/Hurd developers and Debian GNU/Hurd developers and maintainers. Build and run tested on both Linux and Hurd without problems. Also heap and leak tested on Linux with valgrind. No heap errors, but still memory leaks (coming from the original code). Removing the memory leaks will need another deep investigation of the original code, which time does not permit right now. Since there is no upstream, the wish is that the Debian Maintainer takes a look at this patch and checks if it can be applied. Test programs are available on request. This patch will affect all architectures, completely removing the MAXPATHLEN dependencies (except for a few unused compat functions). There might be some remaining unneeded header file inclusions, they are remnants of debugging methods used, both gdb and printf. If that renders the package useless then the bug severity should be grave. Yep, done. Please make sure there are bugs filed against all of those (with at least important severity), either with a usertag so they can be tracked together, or marked as blocking this bug (#656587). Done that too, added totem to the list (fixed in experimental, but don't know if that'll hit unstable anytime soon so asked to be fixed for sid). listen and gmerlin are already fixed, thanks to Alessio Treglia :) Maintainer of libmusicbrainz-ruby agreed on IRC that the package should be removed. -- t -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi Shell is bash 4.2-1. If you want debug output, tell me explicitly what you want. Normally I like a good mystery, but I do not have the time right now. Bug#657117: pulseaudio: FTBFS on armel due to linking nonexistent volume library
Package: pulseaudio Version: 1.1-2 Severity: important 1.1-2 doesn't build on ARM (https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=pulseaudioarch=armelver=1.1-2stamp=1322258208) due to a failed attempt to link an arm-specific volume lib. The package builds and plays audio just fine without it. Bug#657120: libvirt-bin: Should bring down virtual networks upon stop when no VM still there
Package: libvirt-bin Version: 0.9.8-2 Severity: normal Hi. When one issues /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin stop, and no VMs are still running, it should bring down the virtual networks. AFAICT, virbr0 is still there, though. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvirt/+bug/345485 for some details on this issue on Ubuntu side. AFAIU, the conclusion in that LP bug was that nothing should be down WRT networks when VMs are running. But I think that one could expect that libvirt actually *knows* if VMs are still running, and may then be able to do things if no VM it started are still running. Is there something that can be done to have libvirt not mess too much with the host when it is no longer needed ? Thanks in advance. tags 657120 +wontfix thanks On Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 10:30:49AM +0100, Olivier Berger wrote: Package: libvirt-bin Version: 0.9.8-2 Severity: normal Hi. Libvirt doesn't bring down vms when it stops nor storage pools nor networks. Why should it? It should infact preserve it's state across restarts. Cheers, -- Guido -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#582195: user friendly error messages in GUI
I was pointed to this bug just recently. While the permissions issues have been long fixed in version 0.17.x and the upcoming 0.18.x, the user friendly error message was still a valid request. So I coded it up. The latest Barry git repo has this fixed. When version 0.18.x gets releasd, and makes it to the Debian repos, this bug can be closed. The fix also inspired some enhancements to the library, for ease of use and programming, so this fix is not a simple backport to version 0.17 and earlier. Bug#657074: epdfview: becomes confused and sometimes crashes on repeated reloads
Hi Jordi, here's a bug report from a Debian user which manages to crash epdfview when refreshing a pdf. I can reproduce, not everytime though (it usually spits a lot of stuff on terminal but doesn't always crash). I've attached a backtrace and there's a link to the pdf in the original bug report. The same pdf in evince-gtk doesn't produce the same errors so although it might be poppler-related there's still something fishy. Bug#657086: gosa: Should use characters in idGenerator rule, not bytes
Am Montag, 23. Januar 2012, 23:28:33 schrieben Sie: Package: gosa Version: 2.6.11-3 Severity: important User: debian-...@lists.debian.org Usertags: debian-edu I discovered this problem in Debian Edu/Squeeze. When a user with a non-ASCII character in the third position of the first or last name is created, the generated username contain a non-valid UTF-8 character. In Debian Edu, our gosa.conf contain the following rule: idGenerator={%givenName[3-6]}{%sn[3-6]}. When using UTF-8, the range [3-6] at the moment do not refer to characters, but bytes in the UTF-8 string. This caused the user 'Gunnar Grændal' to get a propsed username with gungr?, where ? was half the UTF-8 bytestream for æ. I believe it would be better if [3-6] refered to characters 3-6, not bytes 3-6. As non-ASCII usernames can cause problem when trying to log in to different systems, I believe it would be best if usernames are always converted to ASCII, preferably using the //TRANSLIT rule in glibc. For the example above, one would then end up with echo gungræ | iconv -t ASCII//TRANSLIT = gungrae as the proposed username. While it is discussable why this bug is important, 2.7.x packages do the conversation in another way: $value = iconv('UTF-8', 'US-ASCII//TRANSLIT', $value); Same for the 2.6.x maintainance series. You can simply take the function gen_uids from here https://oss.gonicus.de/labs/gosa/browser/tags/2.6.13/gosa- core/include/functions.inc in order to create a patch for squeeze. Bug#651611: clementine: ctrl+alt+pageup/pagedown global hotkey doesn't work
Hello Krasu, hello Thomas, hello anyone, the bug described *could* be related to a general (global) hotkey problem with Clementine 0.7.1 and Gnome3. See [1] However it does not (neccessarily?) explain, why Ctrl+Alt+Home/End works for you. Maybe, for further investigation, could you try to use the PgUp/PgDown keys with e.g. Totem running parallely? At least running Totem with an empty playlist magically activates my Play/Pause/Next hotkeys for Clementine (in my case it's Fn-combinations on a laptop). Regarding this general problem @Thomas: As the Clementine 1.0 packaging for Debian seems to be stuck due to the dependencies, would it be possible to add fix [2] to Debian's Clementine 0.7.1? Bug#657014: [Pkg-xen-devel] Bug#657014: Bug#657014: Wheezy, Squeeze and Ubuntu server 11.10 has missing boot option to Xen
On Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 06:26:29PM +0100, Erik Hjelmås wrote: When installing xen-linux-system on a new Dell R810 server, Wheezy, Squeeze and Ubuntu server 11.10 all boot fine when booted directly into the standard kernel, but when booting through Xen (after installing the package xen-linux-system) the boot process hangs as soon as Xen passes control to the Dom0 kernel: Gave up waiting for root device etc and it gives me Busybox, but it is also frozen, so there's no other option that reboot. This might be the same issue as #649923. But please could you provide full console logs so we can verify. If you are able to try the patch in that bug or perhaps a backported 4.1 hypervisor that would also be potentially interesting. its the same behaviour on both squeeze (4.0) and wheezy (4.1) since everything freezes on boot, I dont have any logs other than the attached screenshot at the time it freezes (or is something logged this early in the boot process by Xen? I can reboot without Xen and inspect other logs) Please set up a serial console so you can capture the full boot messages from both Xen hypervisor and dom0 kernel. In your case you can also use the SOL (Serial Over LAN), provided by the iDRAC management processor. http://wiki.xen.org/xenwiki/XenSerialConsole After several days of troubleshooting it turns out that adding dom0_mem option (e.g. dom0_mem=8192M) to the multiboot line of /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen FIXES THE PROBLEM ! maybe this has to be fixed in the package? That file is provided by grub, not the hypervisor but I don't think that fix will work since a) really it is a workaround not a fix and b) it is not really possible to determine what is the right number to use for any given system. I agree, my solution is a workaround and not at fix I first suspected that there was a problem with the initramfs so I added the megasas driver to /etc/initramfs/modules and updated initramfs. This resulted in a Cannot allocate memory error (when trying to load the megasas driver) at the same stage in the boot process. And since Busybox is not able to run either, Xen seems to not give any memory available to the Dom0 kernel when it passes control to it in the boot process. Meaning the Dom0 kernel fails immediately since I guess accessing the root devices is one of the first things it tries to do. I will attempt install squeeze and wheezy on a different older server (Dell R900), during the next couple of days to see of the same error pops up, and Ill look for more log data then , I assume you have already installed all the latest BIOS/firmware updates etc? -- Pasi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Why should it? Because it started a network even though no VM was ever started, AFAICT. I have a virbr0 bridge started automatically even if I haven't used a VM since my machine's boot... and if I stop libvirt-bin, it stays there. Shouldn't it do things in a symetric way as for the start operations ? Hope this is a sound rationale. Are you sure you tested the Debian (in contrast to the Ubuntu) package? Yes sir. We don't start any networks automatically. So there's no virbr0 by default. It only does so if you set the network to _autostart_. Ok, so let's add a condition : if libvirt is configured so as to start the network with autostart, then it should have a symetrical autostop feature, for when no VM is left. The network is autostarted _unconditionally_. It doesn't matter if there are VMs or not. Libvirt does more than starting and stopping of machines. It manages network interfaces, storage, etc. So the feature you're asking for is configurable auto-destroy of networks, storage pools and vms when the daemon is stopped if I understand correctly. That's a valid request and I'd recommend to discuss this with upstream. These directories were created by dkms when a kernel module was built and installed. An example from http://piuparts.debian.org/sid/fail/west-chamber-dkms_20100405+svn20110916.r119-1.log 2m15.4s ERROR: FAIL: Package purging left files on system: /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64 owned by: linux-headers-3.1.0-1-amd64 /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64/updates not owned or from http://piuparts.debian.org/sid/fail/blktap-dkms_2.0.91-1.log 0m46.0s ERROR: FAIL: Package purging left files on system: /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64 owned by: linux-headers-3.1.0-1-amd64 /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64/extra not owned /lib/modules/3.1.0-1-amd64/kernel not owned All these tests are done in a minimal chroot with some kernel headers installed but usually no kernel installed. Testing more intensively by always installing kernel headers even if the *-dkms package does not depend on them makes all *-dkms packages fail the piuparts test. Bug#620258: PHP5-memcache in Squeeze still cannot delete items from memcached
This bug still exists in the version of memcache available in Squeeze. It's really easy to reproduce when using php5-memcache + memcached + the memcache object-cache backend for WordPress - it leads to strange behaviour when editing posts because the cache deletion fails I uninstalled php5-memcache and installed v3.0.6 from PECL instead and all works fine. Any chance we can get a fixed version in Squeeze soon? -- Peter Westwood http://blog.ftwr.co.uk | http://westi.wordpress.com 50BF A954 E072 23DB B50A A319 56C3 8FFF 9C72 AB79 signature.asc Description: Message signed with OpenPGP using GPGMail
