Bug#681263: Not sure
Well, I did install compiz manually and since it didn't have make uninstall, I had to uninstall manually as well. However, I think this behavior was my motivation to try to install compiz manually. Anyways, I removed all mentions of compiz from my system, purged compiz from synaptic, and installed again. If there is more info you would need, let me know! Thanks,-Pablo

I'm inclined to agree, particularly with an eye to the whole doc directory issue for which we have multiple open Policy bugs. The main reason why we don't currently link the doc directories of many of our packages together, which would often be better for our users and less confusing, is because we can't link between arch:any and arch:all packages or risk having different versions installed because we could get the wrong changelog and copyright files. Hi Jonathan, On 2012-07-13 14:38, Jonathan Nieder wrote: Gergely Nagy wrote[1]: Does Recommends guarantee that the platform will stay intact, unless I explicitly remove a recommended package? No? I am not sure what is platform here. I have no idea whether it does (in cupt) or not, so please document it. Recommends means that the package is needed in all but unusual installations. If you have not declared by explicitly removing the package that yours is an unusual installation, a normal upgrade should not allow this necessary package to be removed. No, not quite. There is no thing like 'normal upgrade', handling is (and IMO should be) common for all kinds of requests, including partial and peppered with additional requirements upgrades. An example of additional requirement may be install new package X which conflicts with a recommended package. General handling of soft dependencies is documented in [1]. Cupt tries to keep existing recommends (by default) unless something more important [2] pops out. By adjusting [3] user can adjust importance of Recommends in Cupt. Finally, console front-end in wheezy notifies you [4] if existing or new Recommends is not satisfied in the proposed solution (only if installed/keeping Recommends is turned on, of course). Bug#681562: debian-policy: Consolidate the definition of the base system.
Package: debian-policy Severity: wishlist Dear all, the base system is defined in section 3.7 (chapter 3 describes binary packages). It consists of packages of priorities required and important, and these priorities are defined in section 2.5 (chapter 2 describes the Debian archive). The Policy contains the following additional statements about the base system. The system-wide mail directory is file/var/mail/file. This directory is part of the base system and should not be owned by any particular mail agents. The Debian base system provides the prgntempfile/prgn and prgnmktemp/prgn utilities for use by scripts for this purpose. If a package needs any special device files that are not included in the base system, it must call prgnMAKEDEV/prgn in the prgnpostinst/prgn script, after notifying the user. footnote The Debian base system already provides an editor and a pager program. /footnote The mail spool is part of the base system and not part of the MTA package. I filed this bug as a reminder to try to consolidate the definition of the base system in Policy version 4. Bug#681508: cupt: please clarify how Recommends are handled
Hi, Eugene V. Lyubimkin wrote: Hi Jonathan, Thanks for a quick reply. On 2012-07-13 14:38, Jonathan Nieder wrote: Gergely Nagy wrote[1]: Does Recommends guarantee that the platform will stay intact, unless I explicitly remove a recommended package? No? I am not sure what is platform here. I should have included some context. Gergely was discussing a hypothetical version of the gnome-core package that Recommends instead of Depending on network-manager. network-manager is part of what the GNOME maintainers call the core components of the platform (image viewer, etc). Some people prefer to use an alternative tool to configure their network and this scenario was a proposal to make the gnome-core package more useful for these people. By the platform will stay intact, he meant that if network-manager was installed to satisfy gnome-core's dependency (because this machine is not one of those unusual setups that uses an alternative tool to configure the network), it stays installed. [...] General handling of soft dependencies is documented in [1]. Hm, thanks. Cupt tries to keep existing recommends (by default) unless something more important [2] pops out. This is what I was guessing. It is internally consistent. By adjusting [3] user can adjust importance of Recommends in Cupt. The same unsatisfied Recommends can be unimportant or very problematic, depending on the situation: i. recommender was not installed before. Imagined scenario: installing a package (which has a Recommends) with user-facing functionality for the first time. The Recommended package could be necessary, but if it is then the sysadmin will notice quickly while testing the package. Treating it as a 'soft' dependency is fine. ii. recommender was installed before, recommended package was not installed before, recommendation is not new. The sysadmin has evidence that the package worked fine without the Recommended package, so trying to install the latter now is not urgent and is probably not worth the risk. iii. recommender was installed before, recommended package was not installed before, recommendation is new. The Recommended package could be necessary, and the sysadmin will not necessarily be making an effort soon to test the recommending package. Satisfying the new dependency is fairly important. iv. recommender was installed before, recommended package was installed before. The Recommended package could be necessary, and the sysadmin will not necessarily be making an effort soon to test the depending package. Keeping the dependency satisfied is fairly important. It would be interesting to be able to assign different scores for case (i), case (ii), and cases (iii) and (iv). Unfortunately this kind of heuristic does not behave well in some common cases: * package renames * reorganization of dependencies (Recommends moving within a dependency chain) It also breaks some symmetries. A more appealing approach would be to treat Recommends as Depends until a sysadmin explicitly opts out of them. The list of recommender/recommended package pairs that have been opted out of, along with a human-readable description of the reason for each, would be stored, and these Recommends would be treated as non-dependencies from then on. Finally, console front-end in wheezy notifies you [4] if existing or new Recommends is not satisfied in the proposed solution (only if installed/keeping Recommends is turned on, of course). This is why it hasn't been more than a small inconvenience for me in practice. :) Does that answer your question? Yes, it helps. I will mull this over more before trying to come up with a documentation change that would help others with the same question. Bug#680100: [Gc] Powerpc/m68k/freebsd issue running test_stack
Hi Ian, I fixed build problem with kfreebsd/i386: https://github.com/ivmai/libatomic_ops/commit/613f39d369045e8fc385a439f67a575cddcc6fa1 (push to master and to https://github.com/ivmai/libatomic_ops/tree/libatomic_ops-7_2-hotfix-1 - will go to v7.2d release including that of bdwgc) I'll try to find the problem with test_malloc on kfreebsd/i386. I can't access ppc and m68k platforms, so it would be good if someone else prepares the patches. Regards, Ivan Tue, 3 Jul 2012 11:16:29 -0700 Ian Wienand i...@wienand.org: Hi, We've received Debian bug #680100 [1] that test_stack is spinning out on powerpc. There is also a possibly related bug with test_stack seeming to give a bus error on m68k [2], and on i386 with the freebsd kernel [3]. The change that you pushed the other day should only have affected ia64; so I think what we're seeing here is an existing issue just showing up because the recent update has made libatomic-ops rebuild on all these architectures. The freebsd one pre-dates recent changes... Maybe these are related, or maybe not. It would be great if anyone with these architectures could duplicate the problem to give us some more clues. -i [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=680100 [2] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=680066 [3] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=655872 ___ Gc mailing list g...@linux.hpl.hp.com http://www.hpl.hp.com/hosted/linux/mail-archives/gc/
Bug#680674: transition: leptonlib
Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com (07/07/2012): This is a request to start a small transition for wheezy. Please don't shoot me. *BANG* Alternative plan below. Other release team members may have different views. The current leptonlib packaging ships liblept.so.3 in a package with the same name (libleptonica) as the package shipping liblept.so.1 in squeeze. That is problematic for a few reasons: 1. Upgrading libleptonica causes liblept.so.1 to be removed, breaking leptonica-progs and tesseract-ocr from squeeze, but this dependency is not declared. Add Breaks: accordingly. 2. tesseract-ocr from wheezy requires liblept.so.3, but libleptonica's shlibs file doesn't create an appropriate dependency for that. So a versioned dependency on libleptonica was hardcoded in 3.02.01-4, which will only make for trouble in future library transitions. Optionally fix shlibs accordingly. If I read it right, we have the following Depends: tesseract-ocr → libtesseract3 → libleptonica (= 1.69~) So the versioning against libleptonica is already there, and we wouldn't gain anything in rebuilding src:tesseract after that. Correct? 3. There is no reason not to allow liblept.so.1 and liblept.so.3 to be installed at the same time for a smoother upgrade, but using the same package name prevents that (policy §8.1). I think we can live with that for wheezy. Proper library versioning can happen after that, which is going to need a fix for tesseract-ocr at that time (killing the hardcoded Depends: on libleptonica). [If you still have time to kill, please point involved maintainers to the relevant bits of the Debian Policy for the next release cycle.] Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#664681: transition: KDE's 4.8 release of platform, applications and workspace
Hello, if upstream released KDE SC 4.8.5 (it could be at the end of this month or it may never happen at all), would you let it into wheezy? Upstream is focusing on 4.9 right now and 4.8.5 would really contain only (a couple of) bug fixes. It would be great to ship Wheezy with the base which is at the latest upstream stable point release. We would probably not upload everything, just important bits (a.k.a. KDE Plasma Workspaces): meta-kde kactivities kde4libs kde-runtime kdepimlibs kde-wallpapers kde-workspace kdeplasma-addons kde-baseapps and maybe a few others which we think have important bug fixes. Obviously, no SONAME changes, shlibs bumps, 3rd party package breaking or anything of the similar destructive kind will be involved, only bugfixes. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#681508: [Cupt-devel] Bug#681508: cupt: please clarify how Recommends are handled
On 2012-07-14 04:49, Jonathan Nieder wrote: [...] By the platform will stay intact, he meant that if network-manager was installed to satisfy gnome-core's dependency (because this machine is not one of those unusual setups that uses an alternative tool to configure the network), it stays installed. Ack. So, yes, it cannot be guaranteed (at least in Cupt) in all cases. In practice the chance is low. To me, it's the roughly same as iii. Not always package will be tested enough (or at all) after installation to quickly recognize missing features. So here Recommends is fairly important as well. ii. recommender was installed before, recommended package was not installed before, recommendation is not new. The sysadmin has evidence that the package worked fine without the Recommended package, so trying to install the latter now is not urgent and is probably not worth the risk. This is special-cased in Cupt (and documented in 'Soft recommends', Note 2). iii. recommender was installed before, recommended package was not installed before, recommendation is new. Agreed. It would be interesting to be able to assign different scores for case (i), case (ii), and cases (iii) and (iv). Thus, so far I don't see reasons to treat i differently than iii and iv, and therefore, no reasons to change the scoring system given ii is special-cased already. Unfortunately this kind of heuristic does not behave well in some common cases: * package renames * reorganization of dependencies (Recommends moving within a dependency chain) It also breaks some symmetries. Yep. I am trying to keep system simple. (In Cupt) you can use a pin system for it. Assign a -1000 to a package which will outweight (by default) Recommends. This is indirectly documented in score system introduction but maybe more visibility needed, patches welcome. Does that answer your question? Yes, it helps. I will mull this over more before trying to come up with a documentation change that would help others with the same question. Much appreciated, thanks for caring. -- Eugene V. This patch is less invasive so I would like to use it first; the release team will let us know if [2] is worth pursuing later. Bug#681571: transmission: maximum peers per torrent setting is not applied globally
Package: transmission Version: 2.52-1 Severity: minor Hi, The setting for 'maximum peers per torrent' seems as if it should affect all torrents currently in Transmission's queue. However, in fact this seems to only affect torrents that are added *after* this value has been set. So if I add a torrent with the limit at the default, and then I later want to lower this value to free up some bandwidth, this won't apply to the existing torrent, unless I remove the torrent and re-add it. To reproduce: find a very popular torrent with more than 20 seeders. Set 'maximum peers per torrent' to 10, add the torrent. Transmission's status will say Downloading from x of 10 connected peers. Now go to Edit Preferences Network and set Maximum peers per torrent to 20. I would expect the existing torrent to adjust to the new global limit and connect to more seeders -- this is what happens with the Maximum peers overall value, actually. But instead, the torrent will stay connected to only 10 seeders. If you remove and add the torrent again after setting the value, it will correctly connect to 20 seeders. Bug#681572: Resizing of regions with 'altscreen on' causes segfault.
Package: screen Version: 4.1.0~20120320gitdb59704-5 Severity: normal Hi, the new screen has introduced a bug that makes the split management almost unusable. After many tests and searches it seems related to the alternate screen support, so here how to reproduce it: - enable the alternate screen: ^A :altscreen on - be sure to have at least two windows opened, then split with ^A S - open Vim - make the current region bigger with ^A :resize 83% (same with +number or while decreasing the other size) or remove it entirely with ^A X - close Vim and screen crashes with [screen caught signal 11. (core dumped)] The same thing happens with Midnight Commander when the size of the region increases; it also crashes immediately if launched automatically at the startup. I tried in Xterm, Urxvt and tty, I was in trouble to crash Vim in tty but eventually I won; MC doesn't crash but it can't redraw the screen properly, so it makes a mess with the text. Bug#681574: libleptonica: shlibs computes wrong dependency
Package: libleptonica Version: 1.69-3 Severity: important Justification: inaccurate dependency in shlibs file (policy §8.6.3) Tags: patch Hi, Packages linking to a library use the shlibs system to automatically compute their dependencies. This makes the work of the release team a lot easier --- when the ABI of a library changes in such a way as to require a stricter dependency for binaries built against it, the correct dependency gets used automatically with no need for manual effort to add it in the depending package. Currently the dependencies computed through the shlibs system for libleptonica are inaccurate: because they are unversioned, they are satisfied by libleptonica from wheezy as well, which does not even provide liblept.so.3. To work around this, libtesseract3 gained a hard-coded versioned dependency. Let's fix the shlibs file so we can drop that workaround in tesseract and create fewer surprises for future users and packagers working with the library. debian/changelog |2 ++ debian/rules |2 +- 2 files changed, 3 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/debian/changelog b/debian/changelog index fa541b31..c4be472d 100644 --- a/debian/changelog +++ b/debian/changelog @@ -3,6 +3,8 @@ leptonlib (1.69-3.1) local; urgency=low * Add Breaks relations to prevent libleptonica from satisfying dependencies by packages in squeeze and producing liblept.so.1: cannot open shared object file errors. + * Use a version (= 1.69~) in the libleptonica dependency in +libleptonica.shlibs. -- Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com Sat, 14 Jul 2012 05:41:18 -0500 diff --git a/debian/rules b/debian/rules index 007d76a1..3b7003b0 100755 --- a/debian/rules +++ b/debian/rules @@ -61,7 +61,7 @@ binary-arch: build install dh_strip dh_compress dh_fixperms - dh_makeshlibs + dh_makeshlibs -V'libleptonica (= 1.69~)' dh_installdeb dh_shlibdeps dh_gencontrol -- 1.7.10.4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. No. Just a try to make my message clear for You. In this case you should phrase your words a little more carefully. It should be obvious that asking me if I want to deny bugs is offending me. Anyway, I don't know what setup you have exactly. I just tested a plain openbox 3.5.0 from upstream as well as openbox from Debian again and the exit menu works just fine. You may want to change the menu entry to do something like lxsession-logout or execute a command to kill your lxde session. I also use version, and for users on the same host is does not work. Can You shed some light on how You change the commands that are run from that menu? Yes, edit /etc/xdg/openbox/menu.xml There is no openbox bug here as far as I can judge, thus closing the bug report. Hmm. What if I the commands are set already? May I will check it first - after You tell me how? Sorry, I think I don't understand what you mean. Please try to rephrase. I know there are some doc updates, along with updated MetaSIP-generated comments, but that's still a lot… 1554 files changed, 10441 insertions(+), 3247 deletions(-) I guess it would be nice for someone to dive into this to determine how much really changed (and the amount of code one would need to review if more regressions are found)… Every file has between two and six lines of change due to both the MetaSIP- generated comments and the changed copyright year. After removing those and the changes in docs/examples the attached diffstat is what's left. Instead of 1554 files, it's 127 and only 10 of those have more than a 100 LOC change (total lines changed in the reduced set is 4427). A significant fraction of the remaining diff is the addition of IFDEFs assocaited with support for Qt5 and code for that (which won't affect us since we aren't building against it). When it is upstream what is the meaning of adding it in fonts-gujr-extra? Basically fonts-gujr-extra is fonts with inactive upstream but which are still important fonts. We in Debian-IN team take care of these fonts. But this new font has its own upstream and its own download point adding it in some other package is not meaningful and again its easy to maintain them separately. PS: It took me a while to separate out whole bunch ttf-indic-fonts into separate packages have a proper copyright and stuff. ttf-indic-fonts was a *jar of worms* as Chirstian phrases it ;-) and we better not create one more jar of worm :-D if there is going to be only one font in the dir, why not just put it in extra dir than each font in its own dir... after installing all Indic fonts I have about 20 or more dirs under truetype related to indic. As I said above it should always been in this way from beginning but I don't know why ttf-indic-fonts was created by mixing all fonts together during that time. I understand about multiple directory for even same language fonts but we always have to preserve the upstream we don't have right to change their package by our self. We can't steal their identity by putting them in some other packages. If you are worried about how to get all fonts installing fonts-indic should get all fonts automatically same for language wise fonts installing fonts-malayalam installs all Malayalam fonts user don't need to worry about remembering font names. For devanagari there are fonts-deva-extra - 5 fonts fonts-nakula, fonts-sahdeva, lohit-devanagari - 1 each. We made a mistake here fonts-nakula should install font to truetype/Nakula and same for truetype/Sahadeva as they are the actual names of fonts same with lohit. fonts-knda-extra - 8 (2 sets actually) fonts-navilu, Gubbi (should this not have been fonts-gubbi?) , lohit-kannada - 1 font each. fonts-navilu goes to Navilu and fonts-gubbi goes to Gubbi that is their upstream name and same for lohit-kannada since fonts-xxx-extra was created by we just added them to fonts-xxx-extra folder. According to policy fonts- is always prefixed to upstream font name but in some places we missed to rename the directories. Bug#681057: i2c-tools: Error while running decode-dimms

Are the others binaries also broken? If not I don't think the package can be called unusable. I don't know the name of other binaries provided by i2c-tools, can you give me some examples? # dpkg -L i2c-tools | grep bin /usr/sbin /usr/sbin/i2cset /usr/sbin/i2cdetect /usr/sbin/i2cget /usr/sbin/i2cdump /usr/bin /usr/bin/decode-dimms /usr/bin/decode-edid /usr/bin/decode-vaio /usr/bin/ddcmon I try some of this and I have problems only with decode-dimms Dear Maintainer, when I run $ decode-dimms I get this error: 12:21:03 enrico@beatrice-sid:~$ decode-dimms # decode-dimms version 5929 (2011-02-16 14:58:38 +0100) Memory Serial Presence Detect Decoder By Philip Edelbrock, Christian Zuckschwerdt, Burkart Lingner, Jean Delvare, Trent Piepho and others Can't use string () as a HASH ref while strict refs in use at /usr/bin/decode-dimms line 1783. This is not something reproducible at least on the few machines I have tried. It is likely related to the data you have in /sys on your system. Can you please run the following command and send the resulting file: tar -cvzf eeprom.tar.gz /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/ I can't access to this files as root: 11:12:57 enrico@beatrice-sid:~$ sudo tar -cvzf eeprom.tar.gz /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/ tar: Removing leading `/' from member names /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/ /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/module tar: /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/uevent: Cannot open: Permission denied tar: /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/unbind: Cannot open: Permission denied tar: /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/bind: Cannot open: Permission denied tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors Can you please send me the list of files present in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/eeprom/ on your system ?
