I found the culprit: It's the Debian deprecated.patch, which I

I still can't build the libtk-img package on experimental. Its build
depebdencies can't be satisfied at the moment. See the excerpt from
the pbuilder output:

I have now tried switching to Grub2. This boots perfectly on the same
setup. Also after upgrading to initramfs-tools 0.123.
So this is going to be my workaround for the time being. And if grub
behaves, I am probably not going back to lilo.
