Bug#340988: emacs-snapshot: paragraph breaks disappearing in outgoing mail
Jay Berkenbilt [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Well, the problem doesn't happen for me with a vanilla setup, so it must be something in my environment. That's a valuable piece of information. This is, by the way, why I used to always run pretest versions -- before I started doing that, there was never an emacs release in which all my customizations worked together, and my init files used to be littered with version-specific workarounds. Heh. Thanks again for using emacs-snapshot, your bug reports are very useful! Being able to run regularly updated snapshots on this one machine (my main home development system) is great because it means I will always have a stable emacs everywhere else, and with your rapid responses, things never stay broken for very long. :-) Sorry for the occasional breakage -- I do my best to make emacs-snapshot as stable as any Emacs release but even though I read emacs-diffs daily, read the debdiff of each snapshot, and test each version thoroughly (with my setup), some changes still slip under my radar (like the hi-lock bug last week, or this filling issue). Back to this bug: I grepped through your configuration, and it could be caused by any (or both) of the following customizations: - next-line-add-newlines set to t (it's nil here) - this substitution in q-message.el: (substitute-key-definition 'next-line 'mail-abbrev-next-line message-mode-map global-map ) Let me know if I hit the mark. -- ,''`. : :' :Romain Francoise [EMAIL PROTECTED] `. `' http://people.debian.org/~rfrancoise/ `- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#340809: asks whether to create devices instead of telling
So in 0.7.1pre2-11, this bug has changed: instead of always asking the user before creating the device nodes, now the code *never* asks the user, because the debconf .config script has been dropped. Of course, looking at the script in question there was definitely *lots* of room for improvement, but by dropping it completely there is now no proper handling of the debconf questions at all, so all debconf questions will end up with defaults. This also means the user is *not* being notified that device nodes are being created. :) -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. We are still considering sereral issues, but lirc is basically being repackaged almost from scratch, being migrated to module-assistant, upgraded to latest upstream version, and we expect major improvements. Bug#319319: new version, still 'setgroups: Operation not permitted'
when I compile and run this, I get: setgroups: Operation not permitted Note that xscreensaver (4.23) only calls setgroups if it needs to: if the group list already contains only the one group that is intended, it doesn't call it. Bug#324358: preview-latex with emacs-snapshot
Hi. From: David Kastrup [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Bug#324358: preview-latex with emacs-snapshot Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 14:50:46 +0100 I have no idea how the AUCTeX and preview-latex Debian maintainers are planning to deal with it. Bug#341090: filenames longer than 161 are truncated
Package: amule Severity: normal Hi! I've found something weird when using the search function. It seems filenames longer than 161 are truncated to this length. The search function itself doesn't seem to operate on the truncated part of the filename, so any words you were using to search that are in that part of the name will not be considered. Also, the file extension is lost, so amule won't be able to determine the file type. So if the user was looking for Videos, and this file is a video, it won't appear either. I'm not sure if this problem is in the uploader or downloader client, but in any case it's an aMule bug since both sides were running aMule on my tests :) (in fact, both sides were the same one). I think one should expect at least 255 char filenames to be supported, since this is what NTFS supports on Winblows platforms. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) (ignored: LC_ALL set to C) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#341091: emacs-snapshot-gtk: Function of locally installed No Gnus overridden by the one of integrated Gnus
Package: emacs-snapshot-gtk Version: 1:20051124-1 Severity: normal On my system I have No Gnus installed in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus and No Gnus is also used when doing `M-x gnus RET'. Doing `C-h f mm-charset-to-coding-system RET' results in this: , | mm-charset-to-coding-system is a compiled Lisp function in `/usr/share/emacs/22.0.50/lisp/gnus/mm-util.elc'. | (mm-charset-to-coding-system charset optional lbt) ` Doing `M-x locate-library RET mm-util RET' however results in this: , | Library is file /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus/mm-util.elc ` Is the function preloaded, autoloaded or dumped in some way? I grepped through the sources and startup files to no avail. The only suspicious statement I found was gnus/mm-util.el being mentioned in loaddefs.el. As a hint, the problem does not occur if I start Emacs with `--no-site-file'. As a workaround I moved the /usr/share/emacs/22.0.50/lisp/gnus directory somewhere else but it would be nice to let the No Gnus installation override the integrated one without moving directories around. Bug#340699: firestarter breaks nis
Steve Langasek wrote: On Fri, Nov 25, 2005 at 12:19:58PM +0100, Johannes Wiedersich wrote: On Fri, Nov 25, 2005 at 10:26:43AM +0100, Johannes Wiedersich wrote: Subject: firestarter breaks nis Package: firestarter Version: 1.0.3-1.1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software Firestarter is a firewalling tool; nis is a network application. These are not unrelated software. Given that you can break *any* network application by means of a misconfigured firewall, and given that your stated solution for this bug was to make a change to your *nis* config, not to your firestarter config, I don't see any reason to treat this as a grave bug, either. This is a workaround, not a solution. In fact installation/start of firestarter breaks an otherwise working configuration in nis. The really annoying part of the problem is that no hints of what gets wrong is displayed by firestarter; no events etc. The firewall is set up correctly, allowing all connections to the desired private network. I would prefer to change the configuration via firestarter, not nis. How should one set up firestarter to allow broadcassting to 192.168.0.255 for a nis server apart from allowing all connections to and from 192.168.0.0/24? Presumably, allowing outbound broadcast packets to 192.168.0.255/32 on an appropriate destination port and incoming udp packets from 192.168.0.0/24 on an appropriate source port would be correct? As far as I know, YES. I've never personally used firestarter, so I don't know whether it's reasonable to expect all blocked inbound or outbound packets to generate logging events. The package description says there's a real-time hit monitor that shows attackers probing your machine; if it's the outbound traffic that's being blocked, then that doesn't qualify as an attacker probing the machine, so *I* don't have any expectation that such traffic would generate log events. You may have a different expectation; if so, it would help me to know why your expectation is different from mine. To sum it up: the firewall is configured correctly, This is patently false. If the firewall were configured correctly for your application, the application would not fail. If you mean that the firewall *cannot* be configured correctly, that would be a more serious bug, but I haven't gathered that this is actually what you're saying. Let's try to word it precisely: Firestarter is a front end gui configuration tool for some scripts that set up the firewall. If you use this front end to configure the firewall and set it up to allow *all* outgoing connections plus all incoming connections on 192.168.0.0/24, then nis on that subnet is broken. (Not 100% sure, but presumably either the broadcast or its reply are blocked.) Therefore it appears indeed that it is impossible to configure the firewall by firestarter in a way that the default settings of nis work (ie. without the workaund). Maybe the correct wording would be: The way the scripts set up the firewall are apparently different from what is selected from the gui. shows no logs which could warrant a release-critical severity, depending on what the normal logging policy is for firestarter. According to the documentation found at http://www.fs-security.com/docs/tutorial.php `On the events page you will see all connections that the firewall has terminated since you started the program.' This is evidently not the case as far as nis is concerned. This is precisely the reason, why it took me so much effort to find out the reason for the unexpected failure of nis starting correctly. This is not a definition, this is only an explanation of one type of package relationship that *disqualifies* a bug for being of critical severity. :) Software may be related in other ways than through dependency fields -- like I said, a firewall and a network application are another case of related packages. I see this now, sorry. Of course I would like to help you in tracking down the problem; so if you need more information or configuration or log files, please just let me know. Bug#341097: initscripts: Double output of Done checking root file system in checkroot.sh during bootup
Package: initscripts Version: 2.86.ds1-6 Severity: minor During bootup the checkroot.sh produces the following output: Will now check root filesystem. result of the check Done checking root file system * Done checking root file system This is caused by a typo in the script, where construction 'if [condition] action1 then action2 fi' is used instead of 'if [condition] ; then action1 else action2 fi'. I haven't responded to this bug, because there was some discussion at that time about ifrename, hotplug and udev, but forgot about this bug afterwards. Even though the goal is basically to finish the laps as the first, Trophy is an action game which offers much more than just a race. Lots of extras enable unusual features for races such as shooting, putting mines and many others. Trophy is a nice but limited game. Upstream is not working on this game anymore, and there are a number of open bugs, mostly about memory leaks and segmentation faults. These problems are becoming more and more evident, I guess it is bit rot taking place. This package needs a developer with C++ knowledge that wants to find the bugs in the source code and keep the package in shape, despite the inactive upstream. If noone wants to adopt this package, I will request for its removal from Debian. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14.3 Locale: LANG=nl_NL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=nl_NL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#341104: linux-patch-debian-2.6.14: dropping EXTRAVERSION from official kernel patches
Package: linux-patch-debian-2.6.14 Version: 2.6.14-4 Severity: minor Hello, I've just compiled a new kernel from linux-patch-debian-2.6.14_2.6.14-4_all.deb, and I noticed this includes the official patches 2.6.14.1 up to 2.6.14.3, except from the extraversion. The fix is to run make-kpkg as: make-kpkg --added-patches debian --append-to-version .3 kernel-image modules-image Is there some good reason to drop the EXTRAVERSION from official patches ? Bug#328442: same here...
Hi, wavemon used to work with 2.6.12 and ieee80211-1.1.5 and ipw-1.0.6, after I switched to 2.6.14 and ieee80211-1.1.6 and ipw-1.0.8 it stopped working (with the above errormessage). Recompiling the wavemon-package from sid sources didnt help. regards, Holger pgpQk0Sxvuv7A.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#341091: emacs-snapshot-gtk: Function of locally installed No Gnus overridden by the one of integrated Gnus
* Romain Francoise (2005-11-28) writes: Could you send me your config files? I hope we don't need this because I'd have to clean it up quite extensively. (c; The problem even occurs if no user init file is loaded. If you start Emacs with `emacs -q' a subsequent `C-h f mm-charset-to-coding-system RET' will show that the function is already defined and that the version of the integrated Gnus is used. If you start Emacs with `emacs -q -no-site-file' it won't be defined. In particular, how do you set load-path to point to the Gnus installation in /usr/local? I do this with a (add-to-list 'load-path (expand-file-name /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/gnus)) statement in my .emacs file. Or do you have a subdirs.el file in /usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp? No. As a sidenote, are you aware that the gnus package in Debian is No Gnus as well? I seem to remember you mentioning it on emacs-devel but probably forgot about it in the meantime. And a version string of 5.10.6-1.NO.20051020-1 doesn't really indicate that the package contains No Gnus. Anyway, traditionally I build it myself and am reasonably happy with it. Traditionally I build Emacs myself as well but the fan on my notebook died last Friday and the temporary replacement machine does not have the resources for building Emacs. So for that I am using emacs-snapshot right now. BTW, thanks for providing it. (c: -- Ralf -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#341037: phpgroupware has four circular Depends
Hi Bill, Bill Allombert wrote: Circular dependencies are known to cause problems during upgrade between stable releases so we should try to get rid of them. I don't think your analysis completely applies to this case. One possible solution to this would be to fold the dependencies into one package. Bug#341110: tetex-extra: Should remove /var/lib/texmf/web2c/mpost.mem on purge | remove?
Package: tetex-extra Version: 3.0-10 Severity: minor Hello, Pursuant to bug #340890, I found that it is possible to run MetaPost after installing and then purging tetex-extra, but not if tetex-extra was never installed. This behavior is dependent on the history of the system so I feel it is undesirable. The specific file that permits MetaPost to run after purging tetex-extra is /var/lib/texmf/web2c/mpost.mem , which is apparently created when tetex-extra is installed, but not deleted when the package is removed. Therefore I think that this file should be deleted in the prerm or postrm of tetex-extra on purge or remove. The failure to delete this file seems to be a regression. Previous versions of tetex-extra did remove the file; see for instance http://lists.debian.org/debian-tetex-maint/2004/08/msg00305.html If we look at the postrm file for tetex-extra 3.0-10, we find this function: remove_formats(){ for format in $EXTRA_FORMATS; do rm -f /var/lib/texmf/web2c/$format basename=${format%.*} rm -f /var/lib/texmf/web2c/$basename.log done } but $EXTRA_FORMATS is never defined in the script. ## List of ls-R files -rw-rw-r-- 1 root users 1054 2005-11-28 06:28 /var/lib/texmf/ls-R lrwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 25 2005-10-28 15:00 /usr/local/share/texmf/ls-R - /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-LOCAL lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 2005-11-27 02:06 /usr/share/texmf/ls-R - /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-2-386 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages tetex-extra depends on: ii dpkg 1.13.11.0.1 package maintenance system for Deb ii tetex-base 3.0-10 Basic library files of teTeX ii tetex-bin3.0-10.1The teTeX binary files ii ucf 2.003 Update Configuration File: preserv tetex-extra recommends no packages. -- no debconf information regards, -- Kevin B.
