Bug#433596: clisp: Stack overflow taking rational values of extreme long-floats

2007-07-18 Thread J.P. Larocque
Package: clisp
Version: 1:2.41-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I can't take the rational value of any of the six extreme long-float
constants listed below:

for var in least-positive-long-float \
   least-negative-long-float \
   least-positive-normalized-long-float \
   least-negative-normalized-long-float \
   most-positive-long-float \
   most-negative-long-float; do
clisp -ansi -q -x '(let ((var ''$var'))
 (format t ~~S = var)
 (write (rational (symbol-value var'
done
LEAST-POSITIVE-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

LEAST-NEGATIVE-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

LEAST-POSITIVE-NORMALIZED-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

LEAST-NEGATIVE-NORMALIZED-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

MOST-POSITIVE-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

MOST-NEGATIVE-LONG-FLOAT =
*** - Program stack overflow. RESET

Similarly when invoked with -m 32M or -m 128M.

I'm pretty sure this shouldn't happen.

Thanks,

This will need modification in the manual, and will have an

course, this deviation will put off some users of other SCMs when
they move to git, but of course, git users are too special.

I suggest to implicitly do -a. Moving to git already includes
learning about the index, and I think most users will appreciate the
additional control, especially those special git users. :)

If we add a warning when git is in use (like my patch does), it'll
be enough of a cluebat too, I think.

There are technical people who like that detail, but imo, they can use git
 directly.

That said. I've revised your patch; attached.

Well that was easier than I feared it might be. ;-)

Other than changing git-diff to git diff as per Martin's original
patch, does anyone have any objections to this new version? If not then
I'll look at applying it (or something very close) to the next release.

Cheers,

Adam

Bug#433422: exim4: complains inappropriately about DEBCONFsomethingDEBCONF on upgrade

I do not.

Removing the files in question makes the error message go away:

What is so bad about removing the offending files.

I don't understand why it makes sense for your searching code to look
for DEBCONF in those files -- no sane configuration would ever include
them, and they are easy to generate in the process of normal admin tasks.

And it is easy to either disable the warning, or to remove the
offending files. _MUCH_ easier than having update-exim4.conf parsing
the configuration, just to take care of people who are too stupid to
read the docs.

I might consider a patch, but I am not going to implement this myself.

If you still disagree, take this to the tech ctte or to debian-devel.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#427429: debcommit and git

2007-07-18 Thread martin f krafft
also sprach Junichi Uekawa [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007.07.18.0210 +0200]:
I had an impression that the code should diff everything as committed,
and find 'debian/changelog'. The effect should be so that, if you
didn't include debian/changelog in your commit, you get an error and
debcommit will barf out. However, it isn't. If you didn't add
debian/changelog explicitly in the command-line you get a commit
without debian/changelog; which is a different 'bug' to the one we're
 trying to discuss.

This is not what I see. Initially, I thought the patch should call
git add on debian/changelog, but then I decided that it makes more
sense to require the user to actually stage that file along with all
other hunks. If debian/changelog is not staged, you get the
following warning when calling debcommit (with my patch):

debcommit: unable to determine commit message using git (did you
  forget to run git add?)
  Try using the -m flag.

There are technical people who like that detail, but imo, they can
 use git directly.

Sure, but debcommit is really a tool to extract the changelog entry
and reuse it for the commit message. git can't do that.

Bug#424926: Ucf needs debconf-loadtemplate

2007-07-18 Thread PF
I just tried installing php5 on a friend's fresh server running Etch,
and 'apt-get php5' barfed because debconf-loadtemplate wasn't found.

Then I couldn't figure out where to get debconf-loadtemplate from
(debconf-utils).

Then I couldn't install debconf-utils because php5 wasn't configured.

Finally, I figured out that 'apt-get remove' php5, php5-cgi, and
apache2-something-or-other would let me get out of this mess.

This is not a bug that should be happening, and it all hinges on whether
ucf needs debconf-loadtemplate. (By the way, this was ucf version
2.0020.)

I'm a Redhat user, and this is my first exposure to Debian; I don't like
this sort of error, it turns me off.

Thanks!

Bug#433406: acpi-support: Fn-F7 and Fn-F8(bright) not working on HP dv6000t

2007-07-18 Thread Bart Samwel

Jose Luis Rivas Contreras wrote:

Bart Samwel wrote:

Some interesting behaviour there, thanks for reporting. I can't seem to
find anything related to HP backlight in acpi-support in Ubuntu either,
so I'm wondering what controls the backlight in Ubuntu. Perhaps Debian
does something that intercepts signals that are normally intercepted by
the BIOS or something. I have no clue, and no means of debugging this
either, so we'll have to work around it.

Please do the following two things:

(1) Run acpi_listen and then press these keys, and tell me what this
shows?
(2) Check out if you can control your laptop's brightness using some
kind of command. If I understand it correctly, the dv6000t has nVidia
GeForce Go 7400 video, which nvclock doesn't support. Try using the
smartdimmer tool. And are there files in /sys/class/backlight?

If you can provide me with a command (2) and a set of key values (1), I
might be able to get acpi-support to do this for you.

Hi Bart,

I tried `acpi_listen' and don't gives me any kind of return, I checked
the logs (/var/log/messages and /var/log/acpid) and I can't see
anything... I tried as well with `smartdimmer' and according to
`smartdimmer' he's changing bright but I don't see any difference even
making a change from `0' to `21' in the level.

`/sys/class/backlight' is empty.

In that case I don't really know how I can fix this up in acpi-support.
I can't detect the keys and I can't change the brightness. Check these
links:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=398510
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/80512

Both of these unfortunately provide no solution other than upgrade to
the latest Ubuntu version. But there was a good question there: if you
stop the X server, do the keys work? (If so, then it's a video driver
problem.)

Cheers,
Bart

fiasco kernel: CR2: 00100108

After that, no user space program would interact with me, but pings
still worked. The machine was rebooted by the hosting company, and now
seem to be functioning again.

Searching the internet I found two discussions that may be relevant. One
is http://lists.openwall.net/linux-kernel/2006/11/04/69, which includes
a patch, and the other is http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/1/4/196. Since the
machine has been up for almost a year before this problem happened, and
from the version numbers and frequencies mentioned by Linus, I believe
that the first link contains the solution to this problem.

Thanks,
Shachar

Bug#433599: Alternative dependency on poppler-utils | xpdf-reader instead of gs

2007-07-18 Thread Michel Dänzer
Package: keyjnote
Version: 0.10.0-1
Severity: wishlist

According to /usr/share/doc/keyjnote/keyjnote.html, pdftoppm seems to be
keyjnote's preferred rendering method, and indeed seems to provide much
better visual quality than gs. So I suggest changing the dependency on
gs to poppler-utils | xpdf-reader | gs.

Bug#433587: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#433587: request to add /usr/sbin/nologin to /etc/shells

Other shadow maintainers, do we have an agreement, here?

Well, I did add it manually of course to work around the
issue. But I think this is the exact type of situation where it
should be defined as a valid shell in /etc/shells.

The reason to not include it would be if there is a
security situation where having it defined allows some other
unintended level of access. If such a situation exists, then I
can understand not having it in the list. I just wasn't aware of
any such situation whereas I clearly ran across the opposite with
vsftpd.

Maybe including it as a debconf item would be the best
option? Or maybe an informational notice of some kind?

But it's whatever. I just ran across this one situation
where it should be defined and thought that it might be something
to consider. Thanks for thinking about it.

Bug#433602: zephyr-clients: postinst script hangs on empty zhm_args

2007-07-18 Thread Timothy G Abbott

Package: zephyr-clients
Version: 2.1.20010518.SNAPSHOT-17.1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The zephyr-clients postinst script runs /etc/init.d/zhm restart, rather
than /etc/init.d/zhm start; but the zhm init script only checks for
whether zhm_args is empty (to avoid hanging) when it receives the start
argument, not the restart argument. This causes the postinst script to
hang when you install zephyr-clients and do not answer the debconf query.

I've attached a patch which fixes /etc/init.d/zhm so that it does the
check on restart as well.

Bug#433524: Menu disappears and cannot be resurrected

Baruch Even wrote:
The reportbug-ng has a menu option to hide the menu, but I can't find a
way to resurrect the menu. Even restarting the app doesn't restore the

You can get the menu back via

  * CTRL-M (depending on your locale) or
  * by removing the menubar-line in the configfile ~/.reportbug-ng and
restarting rng

I'm not sure if this is a bug. And if, I don't see how to fix it without
removing this feature again.

Bug#433603: zephyr-clients: please package new upstream source

2007-07-18 Thread Timothy G Abbott

Package: zephyr-clients
Version: 2.1.20010518.SNAPSHOT-17.1
Severity: important

I'd appreciate it if you could package a newer zephyr upstream.

The particular problem that I'd like fixed is that zwgc's zephyrgram
windows gain focus in metacity, which makes it basically unusable with
metacity (this was fixed in 2005). There seem to be a great deal of other
bugfixes in the zephyr sources since then as well for memory leaks and
various other problems.

The Athena CVS source with these fixes is at
/afs/dev.mit.edu/source/repository, module athena/lib/zephyr.

Bug#433604: apt-get: Installation of packages fails due to missing utilities.

2007-07-18 Thread PF
Package: apt-get
Severity: important

This is a fresh install of Etch, but installing packages is a pain.
I've tried installing php5 and python, and I keep running into
errors.

The first problem was installing php5. Installation stopped with
'debconf-loadtemplate: command not found'. After 'apt-get remove' of
php5, php5-cgi and apache-something, I was able to install
'debconf-utils', which provided debconf-loadtemplate.

The second problem was installing python. Installation stopped with
'update-desktop-database: command not found'. Did the apt-get remove
thing again, but it aborted, due to update-desktop-database not being
found. Created symlink from /bin/true to
/usr/bin/update-desktop-database and managed to remove things, then
install desktop-file-utils.

The third problem was installing php5 again. It got farther, but then
choked on 'install-docs: command not found'.

This is my first exposure to Debian. If I weren't being paid to do this
work, I'd be switching back to Redhat right about now!

Bug#433607: please build all modules by default

2007-07-18 Thread dann frazier
Package: lirc-modules-source
Version: 0.8.0-9.3
Severity: wishlist

I needed to build the lirc_mceusb2 driver, and it too me a while to
figure out that I need to edit a config file
(lirc-modules-source.conf) for it to do so. My suggestion would be to
build all modules by default, and let users who care about a shorter
build time or smaller install footprint edit the config file to reduce
the modules that are built.

Bug#413225: hplip 2.7.6 packaged on private depot

2007-07-18 Thread Vincent Danjean

tags +patch
severity normal
thanks

  Hi,

I just got the HP Officejet J4780. It does not work with
the currently packaged hplip (so the severity to 'normal'),
so I try to make a new package from the latest release.
I try to change as little as possible your packaging.
I'm not sure I really succeed (python files are in hplip-data
instead of hplip, ...)
I'm sure there is some upgrading issue to take care

But I got a working package that allows me to use my printer
(printing and scanning at least)

For anyone interested, you can find all of this here:
http://www-id.imag.fr/~danjean/deb.html#hplip
I do not plan to correct this package or to improve it.
But feel free to add remarks (if any) to this bug report
so that the maintainer can use them if he wants to.

  Best regards,
Vincent

PS: cc me if you want to reach me : I'm not subscribed to
this bug.

If you have somethig else there - your system is broken.

I looked at the library dependencies in OOo, and it seems like it is using
its own libraries rather than using libcups2. So I filed this bug against OOo
 itself.

Wtrong. It dlopen()s libcups if it's there.

In addition, the detection process should be done asynchronously. Assuming

I think that for the typical user this type of situation is hard to detect
and troubleshoot. It seemed better to take care of it in OOo itself once and
for all, rather than look for and fix each and every daemon that may
 potentially bind to 631/tcp inadvertedly.

The point here is that this config was supposed to disable CUPS altogether
for OOo. It didn't work in my case.

No, you said I should try it, which probably would need to brak my cups
by putting someting else on its port..

What do you think? I haven't filed a bug against rpc.mountd but can do.

Please do. And maybe also libcupsys2? (See above). You can reassign
this, too.

up (so that only the title bar is visible) and back.

  Does Option XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps fix it?

Oh, it does! I did not test it extensively, but most things look OK now.
It would be awesome if I did no need to add an aditional option,

Yeah, it would be nice if XAA wasn't broken...

so I don't know if it is best to just close the bug or turn it into a
wishlist for auto-configuration (or bug fix, if needing that is indeed a
 bug).

Some distros use a patch to automatically disable XAA offscreen pixmaps
when starting a GLX compositing manager, but all the versions I've seen
of that patch have some pretty serious problems:

  * Kills the server abruptly when using EXA instead of XAA.
  * Never re-enables XAA offscreen pixmaps, so performance will
suffer when switching from a GLX compositing manager to none.

If someone were to fix at least the first problem, it might be a
feasible workaround.

Package: cron
Version: 3.0pl1-100

When there is a broken link in /etc/cron.d cron does not recognize when
this link is resolved again.
How to reproduce:

# echo '* * * * * root /bin/true' /root/true
# ln -s /root/true /etc/cron.d/true
then you see in syslog:
/USR/SBIN/CRON[16671]: (root) CMD (/bin/true)
# mv /root/true /root/true.break
the message in syslog:
/usr/sbin/cron[3967]: (*system*true) CAN'T OPEN (/etc/cron.d/true)
now rename the file back
# mv /root/true.break /root/true
(nothing in syslog, cronjob is not executed)

 Maybe, the problem is

a file. (line 135 of the file)

I cannot reproduce this here, so it seems that on a clean system it
works. Are you sure that you aren't hit by #425803? To detect that,
 run

 fmtutil --byfmt latex

and if that fails, follow the instructions in that bug, i.e. run

 dpkg -i --force-confmiss deb_name

 on the downloaded debs of

Thank you for your reply.
 fmtutil --byfmt latex
fixed it.

Now everything is working, so I have no problem.
But I think it should be done with dpkg-reconfigure.
I don't know the internal installation process of latex at all, so I
might be saying something strange. But it is a natural requirement as a
user.

 Hi,

module-assistant is a great tool and really simplifies the process of
 building modules.

However if am trying to build a module against an old kernel, built when
a different version of gcc was default, the version magic in the module
is different to that which the kernel requires, and so the module wont
 load.

To fix this I look up the version required using modinfo on another
module in the target /lib directory and then call

   CC=gcc-4.0 m-a

 as required.

It would be great if module assistant could do this for me. The error

It does in theory. And also in practice, I have not received such
bug reports for a while now.

Please tell me more details - package source, kernel version and maybe
headers, etc.

I don't know how to extract the version of gcc used to compile a kernel
 from a non-running kernel though.

I used the headers:

CC = gcc-$(shell grep LINUX_COMPILER $(KSRC)/include/linux/compile.h | sed
's/.* \([0-9]\+\.[0-9]\+\).*/\1/')

Bug#433611: Completely offline CD build

2007-07-18 Thread Enrico Tassi
Package: live-helper
Version: 1.0~a18-1
Severity: wishlist

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
I really would like to be able to build (or better rebuild) a CD
image offline, that is using the packages cache.

As far as I understand this is now impossible because some software like
grub, squashfs and genisoimages are installed/removed every time (and if
you are offline also the 'update' fails).

Is it feasible to have a two mode operation? one in which this stuff is
installed inside the chroot (nice idea to not require this stuff to be
installed on the host) and the other in which all the necessary is
installed on the host. The second mode also allows not to copy the
entire chroot (that by the way has recently been reverted to the slow cp
-a instead of cp -al).

Cheers

Bug#433499: does not scan anymore

2007-07-18 Thread martin f krafft
let's keep the bug report in the loop, that was my fault...

also sprach Jeffrey Ratcliffe [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007.07.18.0937 +0200]:
Now I have an HPOfficeJet, also running under HPLIP with an ADF, and
gscan2pdf works fine. I also don't understand why you would need the
-b (or --batch) option and the redirect, as the point of the --batch
option is to produce one file per page. I don't have a scanner on this
machine to test it. Do you still get out%d.pnm, or are all pages
 somehow concatenated in output.pnm?

I should be more specific: ADF works. It does not seem to work if
I use the flatbed.

Anyway, despite the error, using batch-scan=no or not using
batch-scan does actually produce out1.pnm, which it should. I was
just put off by the error message.

Bug#433612: Duplicate grub lines

2007-07-18 Thread Enrico Tassi
Package: live-helper
Version: 1.0~a18-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Recently the lh_binary_grub helper started adding 2 fake lines in the
grub menu. Looking at the code, this snipped catch my attention:

  DEFAULT_FLAVOUR=`echo ${LIVE_LINUX_FLAVOURS} | awk '{ print $1 }'`
  DEFAULT_KERNEL=`basename chroot/boot/vmlinuz-*${DEFAULT_FLAVOUR}`
  DEFAULT_INITRD=initrd.img-`echo ${DEFAULT_KERNEL} | sed -e 's/vmlinuz-//'`

  Grub_live_entry live ${DEFAULT_KERNEL} ${DEFAULT_INITRD}
  Grub_live_entry live (fail-safe mode) ${DEFAULT_KERNEL}
${DEFAULT_INITRD} ${FAILSAFE}

  for KERNEL in chroot/boot/vmlinuz-*
  do
  VERSION=`basename ${KERNEL} | sed -e 's/vmlinuz-//'`

  Grub_live_entry live, kernel ${VERSION} `basename
${DESTDIR_LIVE}`/`basename ${KERNEL}` `basename
${DESTDIR_LIVE}`/initrd.img-${VERSION}
  Grub_live_entry live, kernel ${VERSION} (fail-safe mode) `basename
${DESTDIR_LIVE}`/`basename ${KERNEL}` `basename
${DESTDIR_LIVE}`/initrd.img-${VERSION} ${FAILSAFE}
  done

IMO the for loop catches twice the default kernel image. I mean, it has already
been added explicitly, so the for loops add it again. Moreover the former
addition is different not only in the lable name, but also in the path!
And at least in my case the former does not work at all (points to a non
existing path)

Cheers

Bug#431806: ptex-bin: Installation fails while processing a script

severity 431806 important
thanks

Kimikazu KATO [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Thank you for your reply.
 fmtutil --byfmt latex
 fixed it.

Now everything is working, so I have no problem.

I don't think this command solved anything, but anyway it's probably
impossible to debug it now: Your system had still tetex installed,
but this is now gone, and ptex-bin seems to work fine with texlive.

However, the system chooses a strange collection of packages to install
with ptex-bin which I don't understand: Why does it install certain
telive packages at all?. ptex-bin declares:

Depends: ptex-base (= 1:2.0-3), tetex-bin (= 2.0.2-17) | texlive-base-bin,
tetex-extra | texlive-math-extra, libc6 (= 2.5), libkpathsea4

and ptex-base has

Depends: tetex-base | texlive-base, tetex-bin | texlive-base-bin

These are wrong and need to be fixed, therefore there is still something
to this bug, although it's not RC.

First of all, depending on tetex-base never made any sense AFAICT.
These are the correct dependencies:

ptex-base needs to depend on texlive-base-bin (because it calls mktexlsr
in the postinst. By the way, it should be changed:

configure)

- mktexlsr
+ mktexlsr /usr/share/texmf

(or simply use dh_installtex).

For ptex-bin, I guess just dropping the tetex alternatives is all that
needs to be done.

Regards, Frank

You can get the menu back via

   * CTRL-M (depending on your locale) or
   * by removing the menubar-line in the configfile ~/.reportbug-ng and
 restarting rng

I found the ctrl-m solution by chance but it's very not obvious.

Sorry, but the shortcut is visible in the menu. If you remove the menu
by the menu, you should be aware that you cannot reenable it by menu
since it won't be there anymore. That's what the shortcut is for.

I'm not sure if this is a bug. And if, I don't see how to fix it without
 removing this feature again.

Removing this feature is the way IMO. What is the rationale for this
 feature at all?

The rationale is: I hate the menu and don't want to see it. I need a way
to disable it. But I know some users will need the menu so the
compromise is to make the menu optional but enabled by default.

I might add a context menu or something to make it more easy to
re-enable the menu, but that has currently a very low priority on my
list (patches are welcome).

I've never seen an application that allows to remove the main menu
 completely.

I've seen a few, the most important one I use everyday is konsole, where
I've disabled the menu too since it's just a waste of space.

Cheers,

Bastian

thanks

 - the weave part contains header files and Makefiles (again, in the

 - blitz headers are included in the package. Are these really

Those problems are still not addressed, please act, this package is a

This way most users will not be able to shoot themselves in the foot and

Bug#407119: emacs-snapshot: German dictionaries for ispell not works in emacs snapshot

2007-07-18 Thread Agustin Martin
original bug report from Jan Buchal:

emacs-snapshot: German dictionaries for ispell not works in emacs snapshot
ingerman and iogerman packages not works with ispell in emacs snapshot.
Other package as iczech or ibritish works. Maybe the emacs-snapshot not
match the name correctly. In emacs21 these package works.

On Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 05:43:37PM +0900, David Smith wrote:
Hello, I'm working on new packages of emacs-snapshot.

I am not able to reproduce this bug. I installed ingerman and tested the
spelling of the word Rechtschreibung and was told by ispell-word
that RECHTSCHREIBUNG is correct because of root RECHTSCHREIBEN which I
assume is correct behavior. Removing one letter gives a prompt to replace the
 word with the correct Rechtschreibung.

I tested with ispell 3.1.20.0-4.3 and ingerman 20051113-5.

Reviewing bug reports after Martin call,

* Subject: RFH: Removals - emacs-snapshot
* 407119: important: emacs-snapshot: German dictionaries for ispell not works
in emacs snapshot

Note that emacs-snapshot selects aspell as default, so you might indeed be
using aspell instead of ispell unless you explicitely select ispell. aspell
selection mechanisn in emacs-snapshot is completely independent from ispell
one and will take care of german namings.

German entries in emacs-snapshot look for 'deutsch' hash while ngerman
provides 'ndeutsch', this seems to be the reason for the problem, which I
can reproduce (deutsch is not shown in the dicts list).

This does not happen in emacs21, since it uses the dictionaries-common
patched ispell.el and associated files, pointing to the really installed
dicts.

emacs-snapshot does not use this mechanism, we (Roman Francoise and
dictionaries-common maintainers) decided that being a development snapshot,
emacs-snapshot shoud be kept as pristine as possible wrt to dicts, so all
problems are shown.

Possible workarounds from the user side,

* link deutsch.hash to ndeutsch.hash
* Add an user entry in your .emacs file to ispell-local-dictionary-alist

emacs22 uses dictionaries-common (old) patched ispell.el, so things should
work here. I have been doing some work to integrate new ispell.el from
emacs-cvs so it works with xemacs21 ans emacs21 as well, but that is not
at all complete.

So this is an emacs-snapshot only bug.

thanks

not to mention that user does stupid things with APT and does not
wants to be contacted it seems.

 Package: rdesktop
 Severity: critical
 Justification: breaks unrelated software

After installing rdesktop through apt, somehow, it broke a lot of unrelated
software (by removing certain c libs or something like that... I closed the
terminal) and apt stopped working... Every time I tried to install/remove a
package, it would tell me to run apt-get -f install... however, this didn't
 fix
anything and told me to remove packages that I couldn't remove.

 I had to type apt-get -o DPkg::Options::=--force-overwrite, which seemed
 to fix my system.

 If I hadn't got help from #debian, I wouldn't have fixed this...

If someone would like to contact me in more detail, reach me at this address:

Bug#433622: apt: please allow more wilcards in preferences

2007-07-18 Thread Marc Haber
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

please allow more wildcards. I'd like to be able to pin up all
exim4-packages from experimental:

Package: exim4-*
Pin: release o=Debian,a=experimental
Pin-Priority: 1000

Or, I'd like to be able to pin down _everything_ while then pinning up
the things I acutally want:

Package: *
Pin-Priority: -10

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian,v=4.0
Pin-Priority: 500

Both configurations are currently silently ignored.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#433624: apt: please allow release pinning for suite and codename fields

2007-07-18 Thread Marc Haber
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.3
Severity: wishlist

Please allow pinning for suite and codename fields in Release files.

This is the Release file header for etch
(http://debian.debian.zugschlus.de/debian/dists/etch/Release):

Origin: Debian
Label: Debian
Suite: stable
Version: 4.0r0
Codename: etch

When I want to pin etch, I can pin for Version.

But this does not work for lenny and sid, since their release files
do not have a Version: field. To pin lenny and sid, I would need to
pin for Suite and/or Codename, which does not seem to be possible as
documented in apt_preferences(5).

Please add this possibility.

Greetings
Marc

Bug#377282: mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] not delivered to maintainer by default

2007-07-18 Thread Adeodato Simó
* Raphael Hertzog [Tue, 17 Jul 2007 21:13:11 +0200]:

We still have the problem that people mailing the PTS directly won't reach
 the maintainer.

I would lock down [EMAIL PROTECTED] That is, only accept mail
which includes a _keyword in the address. And in my opinion, there would
be no need for _contact. packages.d.o should just send mail to _default
and the maintainer. I think that covers all the cases. (Except that the
maintainer has to remove the default keyword if they subscribe to the
PTS, in order not to receive mail twice; but alas, the same would happen
with _contact. The PTS could be smart and not subscribe to _default or
_contact by default if the person subscribing is the maintainer).

Cheers,

Bug#433625: apt: please make configuration for Release file generation more orthogonal

2007-07-18 Thread Marc Haber
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.3
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

apt-ftparchive has the generate parameter which used to be enough to
do everything necessary to generate the helper file for an aptable
Debian archive. This, however, does not generate Release files on
distribution level (for example the file found on
http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/Release).

To generate these, apt-ftparchive release is needed, which reads
differnet stanza in apt.conf (APT::FTPArchive::Release), which does
not seem to have a mechanism to select the actual distribution that
the Release file is to be built. This means that

(a) it is not easily possible to integrate release file building into
apt-ftparchive generate and
(b) that each actual distribution needs its own apt.conf file.

Please consider re-working that configuration format to integrate
better. For example:

APT::FTPArchive::Release::sid {
   Origin zg;
   Label zg/sid;
   Suite zg/sid;
   Codename zg/sid;
   Description zg backports and local packages, geared for sid;
   FilePath dists/sid/Release;
   SearchPath dists/sid;
};

APT::FTPArchive::Release::lenny {
   Origin zg;
   Label zg/lenny;
   Suite zg/lenny;
   Codename zg/lenny;
   Description zg backports and local packages, geared for lenny;
   FilePath dists/lenny/Release;
   SearchPath dists/lenny;
};

Greetings
Marc

Bug#431505: mondo: should create solid archives

2007-07-18 Thread Bruno Cornec
Rogério Brito said on Wed, Jul 04, 2007 at 06:26:37AM +:

Not only that, but some of the files on the afio archives were
 compressed, while others were not.

True.

I think that the overhead for
compressing all files (and not choosing which one should and which one
shouldn' t) would be negligible and would potentially make the backups
smaller (and faster, but I don't know how much of the time is spent
choosing which files are or which files aren't going to be
 compressed).

I think there could be a big change. Why compressing already compressed
formats ? Especially when you use bzip2 which is quite slow.

I guess that the criterium is that files smaller than a frame/page
 aren't compressed, is that right?

No. Criteria is a set of file extensions (it's documnted in afio man
page, and mondo adds some other extensions to the list. I plan to
re-work that anyway for 3.0.x as there are some bugs in that part).

First this is an upstream problem, not a Debian one IMO.

Not to sound harsh here, but the maintainers are the interface between
the users and upstream. That's because we have wishlist bugs and the
ability to forward the bugs to upstream in Debian's BTS. Again, this
 isn't meant to sound harsh.

Ok. I don't know obviously the Debian process tat well ;-)
But what I think should be done in such a case is open a bug in our trac
system so that it can be discussed upstream, with a link in the BTS no ?

I think that an option to do what I ask wouln't hurt. After all, I
take backups every single day in ISO images (since the other bug that
I filed for mondo to call cdrecord with the -dao option is
approximately 1 year and a half without action) and burn them on CD
and verify the MD5 sums with either readom (from the cdrkit package)
 or with dvdisaster.

I'm working on separating all those parmeters (_dao and the like) from
the code and put them in config files. It takes time, and it's only for
v3.0.x. As I have focussed up to June on 2.2.x, it ddn't progress a lot.
I just began during my vacations to work again on 3.0.x. Hop to propose
a version by September for testers.

On the problem in itself, CD/DVD damage during time. You may have them
corect in MD5SUM at the time you burn it and incorrect 2 years later.
That's where the feature would play nicely ;-)

What we could do is rename the files to make them not having the suffix.
But that should be an upstream enhancement request IMO.

At least, this would be a step on the right direction, since the way
 it is, it is misleading.

Ok. Would you like to fill a bug upstream ?

Greetings,
Bruno.

Bug#433469: PTS: please parse 'Homepage:' pseudo-header in the Descriptions...

Why don't we just start using XS-Homepage
No objection to that, but the header should be XB-Homepage, or XSB at
most. (That is, it should appear in Packages.gz, and probably not in
 Sources.gz.)

Dato, I'm a bit ignorant on this, can you please enlighten me?

I now that XS- goes to the Sources and should be put in the source part
of debian/control. I guess XB- goes to Packages and should be put in the
various binary parts of debian/control.

But the latter is suboptimal, has the maintainer would have to put that
for each binary package, or am I missing that XB- stuff can be put in
the source part and will be propagated to all binary packages?

More generally I've an objection to your proposal, the Homepage
property is specific of a source package, since usually it is tied to
where I downloaded a program from, why you think it should be tied to
binary packages? (and no, I do not consider the fact that it won't be
visible using the current show apt-cache command, but only using
showsrc, as a valid reason: that is a deficiency of our tools at
best).

Thanks for your comment!
Cheers.

Bug#387851: still a problem July 2007

2007-07-18 Thread Henk Koster
As the OP seems to have lost interest, let me report that the problem still
persists on my system (with an Atheros AR5424 chip) running up-to-date Sid
with madwifi-source package 1:0.9.3-3 compiled for the 2.6.21-2-686 kernel.
The problem does not only exist with my Linksys WAG200G AP at home, but also
with various HotSpots on the road.

I have now given up on network-manager (removed it) and am using
wpa_supplicant in roaming mode, which connects flawlessly and automatically
to my WPA-PSK secured LAN at home, a WEP-protected LAN at a friend's house,
or any unsecured HotSpot network on the road, whichever available.

Remarkably, roaming mode of wpa_supplicant seems to be a well-kept secret, as
it is never mentioned in any of the Debian (or Debian-related) forums...

Bug#390471: ship compiled version of tex documents

Instead of xml-howto.tex.gz and xml-ref.tex.gz, it would be more useful
to ship a compiled version of these files, say in PDF, so they can
actually be read by normal people.

A compiled version in text format is actually shipped in
xml-howto.txt.gz and xml-ref.txt.gz.

python-xml is installed quite widely so I am a bit relunctant to waste
disk space for a PDF version. Removing the LaTeX source sounds like a
good option to avoid further confusion.
