Hi
I have not a big HDD on my webserver
i'll let you know when i fix it

2007/11/2, Josip Rodin [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi,

Would it be possible for you to fix your Debian mirror to include source
 packages, too?

The source packages would bring another 37 GB of data to your site, but
carrying them not only helps the users, but it is also necessary to
 satisfy
 numerous license requirements.

For reference, the current version of our recommended mirroring script
 is at http://www.debian.org/mirror/anonftpsync

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us
 know.
 Thanks.

  * Dropping 02-locale.dpatch and 03-icons.dpatch, not required anymore.

I'm having a look into common.py and try to correct it.

Bug#357405: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#357405: xfce4-panel: panel forgets entries when used with multi-head config

I can make changes to the panel on the second head (:0.1), but they

 display (:0.0)
are remembered. The panel stores its configuration data under
~/.config/xfce4/panel in the contents.xml file, and copies this to
contents.xml.active while logged in. It also creates a
 contents.xml.active.1
file for the second head, but its contents are being derived from the
 defaults.
Basically, the panel is not properly saving the state of the second
 panel at
session logout (yes I've tried saving the session). It requires that
 you
reconfigure the panel after each login, and I consider that unusable
 for most
 users.

I have now a second screen to try this non xinerama setup, but I have
two problems:
- I don't really know how to configure dual head without xinerama
- anyway, with randr 1.2 I don't think it's possible anymore to have
this setup

Do you still have the problem and can you provide informations about
your config?

  Description : JBoss Serialization

JBossSerialization is a new approach to java-serialization. The main
feature in JBossSerialization besides performance, is Smart Cloning.
 .
Smart cloning is the capability of the reuse of final fields among
different class loaders doing exactly what serialization does,
without the need of convert every field into a byteArray. This
approach is at least 10 times faster than using serialization over a
 byte array.

Ok, using a dual head setup (with randr 1.2) I can move my panel from

it never was enabled in debian since a long time due to questionable
license text, see
http://wiki.debian.org/KernelFirmwareLicensing#head-8eb93faca600756acd06fc271633bf81254ac1a5

I worked around this by using make menuconfig and make-kpkg and
rebuilding the kernel, but it would be nice if these devices were
supported in the default Debian binary kernel linux-image package.

you might want to ask the vendor to change license to bsd
as he may no longer care, then it is no trouble to distribute
in debian main.

Comments/Problems:

Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments

The [E] after Install tasks: above is for a misconfigured X server.
Aside from that, there was no problem with that installation phase.

Contrary to various reports on the Web, I had no problem with the
CD-ROM drivers.

PROBLEM: Debian-Installer kernel crashes while booting: Illegal
Instruction, Fast Data Access MMU Miss, Stack Underflow.

Solution: always turn power off after running Solaris and before running
any Linux kernel, including the installer.

PROBLEM: Debian-Installer kernel hangs while booting; last message is
Booting Linux

Solution: boot installer with the command install video=atyfb:off.

PROBLEM: Debian-Installer TUI is unusable: the highlighted menu item
looks the same as the unhighlighted items.

Solution: boot installer with the command install video=atyfb:off
DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text.

PROBLEM: newly installed Debian hangs while booting kernel; last message
is Booting Linux

Solution: boot Debian with the command Linux video=atyfb:off. Later you
can add the line 'append=video=atyfb:off' before the first blank line
in /etc/silo.conf, so you won't have to type this parameter every time
you boot.

PROBLEM: monitor says Sync. Out of Range.

Solution: type Control-Alt-F2 to get a console. Log in as root. Stop the
X server. (I used /etc/init.d/kdm stop, but you'll do something else
if you don't use KDE. Possibly you can just replace the k with a
g.) Add the line 'Option reference_clock 29.5 MHz' under 'Section
Device' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Start the X server.

PROBLEM: unpleasant screen flicker, and inappropriate font sizes.

This is because the X Server didn't auto-identify your monitor.

Solution: look up your monitor's specifications. Open a super-user
terminal window. Run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and mostly accept
defaults, but change where necessary to match your specifications.
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually to set the display size in millimeters
(I added DisplaySize 306 230 under 'Section Monitor') and re-add
the reference_clock line because dpkg-reconfigure will have removed
it. Restart the X server.

PROBLEM: Debian-Installer overwrote the Solaris partition's bootloader,
and Solaris won't boot any more!

Solution: see Bug #293867.

By build-depending on the same package as pam, instead of
build-depending on a virtual-package which is not guaranteed to be

Does the current situation (where exim build-depends on a different
package than pam does) somehow better guarantee that exim will have

Hi,

Drake Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

The source of this bug: `hack-local-variables' makes lists of

changed the format of the function-local list variables and then
forgot to update all the places they were referenced.

Thank you very much for finding and reporting this issue. I've

Bug#448915: libsnmp-info-perl recommends unmet netdisco-mibs

Hi Luk,

Luk Claes wrote:

Yes, we are aware of this. The netdisco-* packages were developed in
parallel to the libsnmp-info-perl package, and so netdisco-mibs is
currently tagged and uploaded but awaiting approval for inclusion in the
Debian archive:

   http://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html

The netdisco packages have a dependency on libsnmp-info-perl so we could
not have released them in any other order.

Thanks for the feedback, I hope it won't be too long (maybe a week or
two?) before netdisco-mibs is available in the Debian archive.

it doesn't. I can reproduce your problem.

The version in testing/unstable behaves the same with -I as the version

2007-11-02 Thread Drake Wilson
FYI: now that I've checked, the official source of GNU Emacs 22.1
seems to contain this bug also, as well as the current Arch and CVS
repositories for the relevant Savannah project. I have sent mail
to bug-gnu-emacs accordingly, pointing to this bug report and
replicating most of its content. Hopefully that'll speed up
coordination with upstream.

 Hi

usrp recommends hotplug which is not available in unstable anymore.

Is there a cookbook somewhere that describes how to morph such
dependencies, or is it as simple as recommending udev now? The package
is trying to deliver some logic that allows automatic download of a
firmware image when a freshly-booted USRP first shows up on USB...

I think it's indeed just recommending udev instead of hotplug.

Cheers

Luk

Bug#449013: test/fork.c: child is stopped and does not print anything on 2.6.x, works with 2.4.x

2007-11-02 Thread Timo Juhani Lindfors
Package: subterfugue
Version: 0.2.1a-9.5
Severity: normal

Steps to reproduce:
1) apt-get source subterfugue
2) cd subterfugue*/test
3) make
4) sf ./fork

Expected results:
4) Both parent and child print something in the test:

parent: I see kid with pid = 12956
child: I'm here

Actual results:
4) Only parent manages to print something. After 10 seconds we get
asserotion failure from fork (probably on child side?):

parent: I see kid with pid = 22737
fork: ../nptl/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/i386/../fork.c:138: __libc_fork:
Assertion `({ __typeof (self-tid) __value; if (sizeof (__value) == 1) asm
volatile (movb %%gs:%P2,%b0 : =q (__value) : 0 (0), i
(__builtin_offsetof (struct pthread, tid))); else if (sizeof (__value) == 4)
asm volatile (movl %%gs:%P1,%0 : =r (__value) : i (__builtin_offsetof
(struct pthread, tid))); else { if (sizeof (__value) != 8) abort (); asm
volatile (movl %%gs:%P1,%%eax\n\t movl %%gs:%P2,%%edx : =A (__value) :
i (__builtin_offsetof (struct pthread, tid)), i (__builtin_offsetof (struct
pthread, tid) + 4)); } __value; }) != ppid' failed.

More info:
1) During those 10 seconds the child is T state according to ps.

2) ps -eo wchan, cmd|grep fork reveals that the wchan field of the
child is ptrace which means that the child probably does nothing
until the parent issues PTRACE_SYSCALL but it never does?

3) I see the problem in debian etch with kernels
linux-image-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch4 and
linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2

4) The problem does not appear in debian sarge with
kernel-image-2.4.27-3-k7 2.4.27-10sarge5

5) Debug output (sf -d ./fork) under sarge says

Aha, looks like we're up and reading mail at the same time. (Sorry about

Great idea! Did you remember that Steffen Moeller and I added you to Alioth's

* either the dbus startup script doesn't start the daemon if

* or seahorse should be moved to priority 80.

On second thought the latter should be done in all cases so that other
 environments benefit from it.

The latter solution is wrong. The Xsession.d scripts _prepends_ things to
STARTUP. Thus having seahorse before dbus is the right solution. If you check
your seahorse-agents environment you'll see that it does actually has the dbus
environment variables.

And it would be a good idea to also do the former.

The former is a bad workaround for programs that use dbus (and especially dbus
activation) in the wrong way.

 Any news on this?

How do I detect compositing settings?

Bug#449038: iceweasel: Please edit the default Open/Save Dialog

Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0.0.8-1
Severity: wishlist

The current Open/Save Dialog in iceweasel is a pain for nearly everyone
I know. A cool fix is described here:
http://techpatterns.com/forums/about834.html

In short:
In /usr/lib/iceweasel/components/nsFilePicker.js
replace (near line 273)

compMgr.registerFactoryLocation(FILEPICKER_CID,
FilePicker JS Component,
// *really long comment here*
,
// *really long comment here*
fileSpec,
location,
type);

with

compMgr.registerFactoryLocation(FILEPICKER_CID,
FilePicker JS Component,
// *really long comment here*
FILEPICKER_CONTRACTID,
// *really long comment here*
fileSpec,
location,
type);

The resulting Dialog is much more useable.

Probably the point is that I am not familiar with what should be reported as a

Also, I just downloaded linux-source-2-6-23, and the problem doesn't seem to be

Basically the only environment variables you can expect when you've been
started by dbus is DBUS_* and the various early set environment variables
(LANG, PATH, etc).. When you've been started by a session daemon for an X
session, you can expect DISPLAY to be set correctly too..

For everything else you will need some other way to recover them. In
 seahorse's
case, it should implement some D-Bus api to recover the socket paths that
 you'd
normally get from the GPG_AGENT_INFO and SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variables.

The problem is not about seahorse. It is about processes spawned by the
keybindings. They can be evolution and epiphany, but also, depending on
the preferences, balsa, thunderbird, firefox, etc. Here the problem lies
in a variable that is passed blindly by all these programs to gpg. And
you can't fix all these applications, nor can you expect gnupg to
implement a D-Bus API just to recover the path to a socket.

Bug#428797: xscreensaver: Similar problem, cause found, hacky fix proposed

2007-11-02 Thread Loic Grenie
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.03-2
Followup-For: Bug #428797

I have also an xscreensaver showing hacks only on part of the
screen. The cause is the following: when xscreensaver looks for the
Xinerama screen, it does not check whether the screen is on or off.
It should check for that information using RandR when available. It
is too difficult for me. I propose the following hack to solve the
problem, even though I know that this is not the best. I think it
should not break anything and it is rather clear that it is not the
best possible fix. Anyway.

 grep vo_driver ~/.mplayer/gui.conf
 vo_driver = xmga
The Solution was, after have changed to vo_driver = xv
all is ok.

In an Notebook with Sidux and ATI Card I have exactly the same error.
The mplayer Version: 1:1.0.rc2-0.1 was coming from
http://sidux.com/debian/ sid main contrib non-free firmware fix.main

Maintainer: Christian Marillat
So I'm think its an error in the Upstream-Code.

Bug#449040: update-manager: Smart Upgrade removes packages with dependency problems without confirmation

2007-11-02 Thread Alain Kalker
Package: update-manager
Version: 0.68.debian-2
Severity: grave

In contrast to synaptic, update-manager's Smart Upgrade function
doesn't ask for confirmation of changes when an upgrade would cause
packages which would end up with dependency problems are to be removed.

Cases in point: the update of network-manager to version 0.6.5-1 caused
network-manager-gnome to be removed because the new binary package was
not yet in unstable. More recently, an update to apt caused all
packages which depended on libapt-pkg-libc6.6-6-4.6 to be removed. This
was an extremely grave situation, because it removed aptitude and most
of the other package management tools, including synaptic and
update-manager. Fortunately, apt-get was not removed, so the situation
could be remedied.

IMHO update-manager Smart Upgrade should always allow the user to
confirm proposed changes. The actual installations and removals that
are going to be done are not always clear from reading the changelog
entries, and also the user has to choose between Smart Upgrade and a
normal upgrade before even being able to view the changelogs. After
reading them, users may have forgotten whether they chose Smart
Upgrade or normal upgrade in the first place. (This happened to me
several times.)

Kind regards,

Alain

Bug#448158: more information

2007-11-02 Thread Adam C Powell IV
retitle 448158 FTBFS: Fortran MPI check fails
thanks

Hello Ondrej,

This is a separate issue, and should have been a new bug. The limited
platform availability of OpenMPI is a non-issue, and I was about to
close it after a week of inactivity.

I've retitled this bug to your issue, which is an FTBFS, and will try to
get to it sometime next week. I'll also see if I can build and test
petsc4py and libmesh using OpenMPI.

LAM development has stopped, and its developers have moved to OpenMPI.
Please see item 9 in http://www.open-mpi.org/faq/?category=general and
the LAM homepage at http://www.lam-mpi.org/ for more info. I therefore
feel very strongly that it is worth trying to make OpenMPI the primary
base for MPI software in the lenny release, rather than reverting to the
deprecated lam distribution.

On the other hand, the lam build option for PETSc should still work
using fakeroot debian/rules PETSC_MPI=lam binary -- or if it doesn't
work, then please file a separate bug against petsc.

Next time please check the bug more carefully to see if it is the same
thing you're reporting, and if it's not, then open a new one.

Thanks,
Adam

 Hi Adam,

I have some bad news - I am not able to build the package from source. How to

 $ apt-get source petsc
 $ cd petsc-2.3.3
 $ debuild

But there are more serious problems: the libmesh doesn't build when petsc is
 compiled against
openmpi and I am not able to get it run, not even the old version. Sorry I
didn't find this earlier - I just tested my program with the binary libmesh
package and that worked. Maybe also it was the case that it built, but
 something
with fortran has changed, since petsc also doesn't built anymore.

Also petsc prints some very ugly messages, see for example:

 http://code.google.com/p/petsc4py/issues/detail?id=9

I fear we will have to switch to lam, to satisfy both petsc4py and libmesh.
I am going to try to build everything myself using lam and if I succeed, I'll
 send
 you a patch.

Bug#449039: xserver-xorg: X slows down and finally crash with too many remote clients

2007-11-02 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+3
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing sudden crashes of X when I have too many ( let's say
ten or so) different instances of an X client (Wolfram's Mathematica
6.0 for linux) running on different computers and redirected on my machine
through ssh tunneling.
Pointer and keyboard response, even on locally generated windows, become
sluggish immediately before the failure occurs. This does not seem to
have orgin in network unavailability issues.

If advised to do so, I'll proceed to try to reproduce and attach my
xsession-errors log.

Hope it helps. Thanks a lot,

In
  seahorse's
case, it should implement some D-Bus api to recover the socket paths that
  you'd
normally get from the GPG_AGENT_INFO and SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment
  variables.

Then whatever is spawning these apps is what's the issue here.. Dbus activation
isn't a solution for everything

This audio wrapper handles audio output for the non-free Adobe Flash player.
It also provides automatic detection of the sound system being used:
.
 * It first tries to detect PulseAudio,
 * It then checks for Esound,
 * Then it checks for ALSA,
 * Finally, it checks for OSS.

If all of the above failed, it falls back to the ALSA driver that's built
directly into FlashPlayer 9.

I've been running xfce4 for awhile now using a multi-head disply
configuration (:0.0 and :0.1, no Xinerama). Most of my menu items have
Use startup notification checked. Up until a recent update (I assume
the update to 4.4.1-3 today when I ran an update), this wasn't an issue
as any application I would start up would end up displaying on the
display from which I clicked on the menu item initially.

Now, however, when I try to open an application from the menu
which has startup notification enabled, the application always starts on
display :0.0 even though my mouse and the menu itself is displayed on
:0.1. Unchecking the option in the menu editor allows all of the
applications I try to open on :0.1 to show up correctly on that
 particular display.

I assume the startup notification feature somehow uses an
invisible widget or something to work in the first place and for
whatever reason, this is always being bound to display :0.0 currently.
This is purely conjecture of course though.

I can downgrade to 4.4.1-2+b1 again if you want me to in order
to test this. But I might have to rebuild against Xorg 1.4. I'm not
certain though. Actually, I guess it might even be a feature of Xorg
1.4 since that was also upgraded in my update today I believe. If you
don't think anything that changed between say 4.4.1-2 and 4.4.1-3 would
have affected this, you might bounce this over to the Xorg package
maintainers. I imagine other people will probably run into this problem
though if that is the case and the xfce maintainers might now about it
 upstream already too.

A priori, nothing in the -3 upgrade could have induced that behavior. Maybe in
the -2 upgrade, but if it was working...

Anyway, dual-head and xinerama are dead now that xserver 1.4 is out, it's
replaced by randr 1.2 (not for every drivers but...).non-xinerama dual head is
dead completely, AFAIK, so it may be your problem. Maybe your driver isn't
randr-aware but there was some changes in the xserver.

You could try with Xfce running with another window manager to test, too.

I'm reassigning to xserver-xorg but feel free to get back to us at

Bug#447094: [issue] hgmerge: uses non-POSIX syntax `type' in /bin/sh script [priority=bug]

2007-11-02 Thread Vincent Danjean
  Hi,

  This is the Debian bug #447094 ( http://bugs.debian.org/447094 )
The short story is that 'type' is not allowed (by POSIX) in
#!/bin/sh scripts (in particular hgmerge)
In the debian package, I change hgmerge to be a #!/bin/bash script.
I would like to know if upstream will do the same thing or if this
change will remain specific to Debian.

  Best regards,
Vincent

The `type' builtin is not valid sh syntax: http://bugs.debian.org/397601

It is therefore a policy violation to use it in a script that has a
#!/bin/sh shebang. The simplest way to fix this is to change the
 shebang to use #!/bin/bash.

Bug#448814: Actually, it's not just the To: field

On 02/11/2007, Ricardo Mones wrote:
You cannot pretend claws-mail (or any other program) to know how to
decode arbitrary encoded data from all its potential callers.

Ricardo, this is the code that gets called when claws is invoked with
'claws --compose mailto:something-or-other'. Since everything from the mailto:
onwards is by definition an URI, it *must* be URI-encoded (it would be a bug if
it weren't!). So it's not a matter of decoding arbitrary encoded data, it's
about handlilng URIs the way they are supposed to be handled.

The data should reach command line already decoded by the browser
   calling claws-mail.

This is incorrect. Supose you have a link in a web page to send a message to
J. Random Hacker Co. [EMAIL PROTECTED]. We could not send this address to
claws-mail with

claws-mail --compose mailto:J. Random Hacker Co. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For two reasons:
  1) the shell will separate the URL after J.
  2) even if we quoted it to make the whole address one word, it results in an
invalid URI, because it contains naked spaces, punctuation and even an
which would get the URI parser mightily confused

If not that's a bug in the browser, not in claws-mail. Which browser are you
 using?

I'm using a script I wrote (attached) to make it possible to use claws as a MUA
for debian's reportbug (in fact, this very bug report was sent using it!). To
use it with reportbug, you use

   reportbug --mua /path/to/claws-recompose package

Be kind to it, it's still unpolished, I intend to contribute it to claws tools.

But you can reproduce it just as easily with mozilla-* (and I guess with any
browser) with the attached trivial html file.

This is definitely a bug in claws, not anywhere else.

BTW, it would be nice if you could discuss this with the upstream

Basically the only environment variables you can expect when you've been
started by dbus is DBUS_* and the various early set environment variables
(LANG, PATH, etc).. When you've been started by a session daemon for an X
session, you can expect DISPLAY to be set correctly too..

For everything else you will need some other way to recover them. In seahorse's
case, it should implement some D-Bus api to recover the socket paths that you'd
normally get from the GPG_AGENT_INFO and SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variables.

Bug#449036: initramfs-tools: mkinitramfs - insufficient inclusion of busybox for

2007-11-02 Thread Joey Korkames

Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.85h
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello initramfs-tools team:

I routinely use debootstrap and chroot to create stock debian images for
mass deployment. A recent hair-pulling session occurred for me when I
chose to create and mount the target root LVM volumes of the new images
using the /dev/volume-group-name/volume-name taxonomy instead of
/dev/mapper/volume-group-name-volume-name.

This difference is critical as the mkinitramfs script relies on the user
having mounted their root in the 2nd form in order to notify said user
that they must install busybox to satisfy the needed lvm utilitiy library
dependencies in their new ramdisk so that they can boot from their lvm
volume. It also relies on that mount being for root ('/' in the output
of 'mount') in the first place, which in my usage as described, would
also fail that test.

Observe in the code:
# Busybox
if [ ${BUSYBOX} = n ] || [ ! -e ${BUSYBOXDIR}/busybox ]; then
   mv ${DESTDIR}/bin/sh.shared ${DESTDIR}/bin/sh
   # those root need busybox
   eval $(mount | awk '/ \/ / {print r_dev= $1; exit}')
   if [ ${r_dev#/dev/mapper/} != ${r_dev} ] \
   || [ ${r_dev#/dev/md} != ${r_dev} ]; then
echo Warning: Busybox is required for successful boot!

I think a much better means of testing would be to parse the intended
kernel version's /boot/*.config file to check for LVM=Y|M status in the
compiled kernel.

But honestly, what I _really_ think is needed is that busybox should be made
a required dependency of initramfs-tools.

There is no point in beating around the bush of the many problems with
linked-in

dependencies of these ramdisks' utilities because of a lack of busybox, much
less the uselessness of a broken ramdisk with no working shell.

The ramdisks' utilities/libs are also heavily stripped which means I had
near-zero inituitive diagnostic information displayed upon failure of the
lvm
mounts. I don't think the embedded device users' edge case (furtively
scrimping
bytes) is worth catering to at such a high cost to basic system usability,
much

less the potential debugging burden that is shifted by such decisions from
highly skilled embedded device engineers/tinkerers to hapless end users
running off-the-shelf hardware and (more or less) common software setups.

Another problem I've observed because of this scrimping is that while the
ramdisk

supports IP, it doesn't support DNS and will be happy to _not_ tell you why
(unsatisfied dependencies on /lib/libnss_dns* /lib/libnss_files*
/lib/libresolv*
libs not caught by the initramfs-tools hook functions). This is not
critical

to system operation however, and is most certainly outside a normal use case
of the ramdisk's made by initramfs-tools (which should _NOT_ be a toolchain
for

embedded device use).

This bug escaped dev firstly because it is built around assumptions in the
the ways
that d-i would configure a root-volume-on-lvm - which is totally
understandable

   - but MOSTLY because of ridiculous bit-pinching.

Dependencies in ramdisks should be noted, but shedding them at ANY COST
(like losing the ability to BOOT) is insane.

Let bleeding-edge people bleed (and by their own hand, for trying to run
hardware
that is too limited for the newest software) and fix - normal systems
should just boot.

Thanks,
joey

The latter solution is wrong. The Xsession.d scripts _prepends_ things to

I have made a simple check and it seems that seahorse-agent works even

of aptitude: /usr/bin and nothing else and it's the same thing
with other console apps except reportbug ;).
I noticed there's no problem with fluxbox for example.
 I use xfce4-terminal.

In fact the problem is that, if the command given is the complete path,
xfdesktop fails to run console applications.

A workaround would be to hack our script generating the Debian menu from the
Debian menu files to strip the complete path.

Stay tuned, I'll check that, and maybe report upstream.

Bug#434998: Font is not found

2007-11-02 Thread Gürkan Sengün

graphviz can't use bitmapped ttf/otf fonts, only outline ones (true vectorized
fonts)

the bitmap font i used was a bdf font imported to fontforge then export/saved
as outline font (which only embeds it, ttf/otf).

then i vectorized the font (same tool), now it works, nice font btw:

Bug#418828: /var/lib/tomcat5.5 doesn't belong to tomcat-user after installation

2007-11-02 Thread David Pashley
On Nov 02, 2007 at 12:50, Armin Fuerst praised the llamas by saying:

Servlets should get the temp dir location from the servlet context if they
need to write temporary files. Trying to create files in the current dir is
very broken AFAICT, so I don't see that this is a Tomcat bug. Closing.

This is a good argument, but why make my life as sysadmin more difficult
than necessary? It's not my fault it any servlet wants to write into
 this location?

Why not make everything world-writeable? Network daemons should have
permission to write to as little as possible. If you want to be more
permissive and understand the risks, then you can run a chmod yourself.
It's hardly onerous.

However, for a default install, tomcat should be as secure as possible.
Obviously you should be fixing your servlets and not giving tomcat more
permissions than it needs.

If changing the permission is a security issue, I agree, but at least
 until now I don't see a disadvantage.

Thanks for reporting this, I've finally looked into it. The IMAP flags
handling has been completely broken, indeed. It's now fixed in subversion
(upstream).

Attached is a patch that fixes that behaviour (Look for the difference
 with the following statement:
 imaplib.ParseFlags(response[1])
 ).

It also changes how archivemail determines the flags (and allows the
 setting of 'OLD' flag).

I have been using it locally and it works using Dovecot. Please
 consider adding the patch.

What means old here? Looks like a server specific keyword that's not covered
by the IMAP spec. The IMAP equivalent to moving a message to trash is the
\Deleted flag. (Also note that the mbox status 'O' differs from what mutt is

note that the gnome menu has already been updated to support this

I'm not completely aware of the way Debian menus are generated for Xfce,

 using /etc/menu-methods/xfdesktop4.

Did you try to run update-menus after working on your package? What is
the precise problem? How does your application appear
 in /etc/xdg/xfce4/menu/menudefs.hook?

Mhmh, do you have any problem with this? Any news or something?

You could try moving your .config and .cache (or just the xfce related
bits) out of the way temporarily to see if there's something in your
 xfce config causing this too.

Do you have any progress on this? You can also try with a fresh user (to be

is bogus, it uses the hi part of the second DSP accumulator register
as signal mask. :-) The sigset_t which used to be in that place was
never actually life, it was scrapped when DSP support was added.

Yes, xfdesktop leaking memory is a known problem, not really fixed.
I wonder why this bugs isn't yet merged with #376177 so I'm doing this know.

Bug#449027: vserver: [notice] child pid 27907 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

2007-11-02 Thread Gerhard Gaußling
Hallo Stefan,

thank you for the response. I did an ` aptitude install apache-dbg
libc6-dbg` and reenabled mod_backtrace and mod_whatkilledus, but I
'm afraid, the messages are all the same:

Unfortunately I don't get new coredumps by mod_prctl.so
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/httpserv/ihsdiag/1.3/mod_prctl.html

I also don't know what 'action' these core-dumps produced:
# ls -l /cor*
-rw--- 1 root root 3928064 2007-10-02 12:27 /core.13649
-rw--- 1 root root 3928064 2007-10-02 12:28 /core.16058

-rw--- 1 root root 3928064 2007-10-02 12:31 /core.23832
-rw--- 1 root root 3928064 2007-10-02 12:36 /core.8024

but these 'old' dumps are produced these gdb outputs:
[...]

debugging
symbols found)...done.

Core was generated by `apache graceful'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
#0 0xb7ff26e7 in _dl_rtld_di_serinfo () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2

If I get such a new core.dump with these debug symbols of apache-gdb and
libc6-gdb loaded, I'll give you a note.

Did I forget something to enable these debug symbols, or does it suffice
to simply install the packages?

regards

Gerhard
