The source packages would bring another 37 GB of data to your site, but carrying them not only helps the users, but it is also necessary to satisfy numerous license requirements. For reference, the current version of our recommended mirroring script is at http://www.debian.org/mirror/anonftpsync If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. Bug#357405: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#357405: xfce4-panel: panel forgets entries when used with multi-head config
On jeu, 2006-03-16 at 23:10 -0500, Phillip Steinbachs wrote: There is a problem with the panel on multi-head (non Xinerama) setups. I can make changes to the panel on the second head (:0.1), but they are not remembered on the next login. Changes to the panel on the first display (:0.0) are remembered. The panel stores its configuration data under ~/.config/xfce4/panel in the contents.xml file, and copies this to contents.xml.active while logged in. It also creates a contents.xml.active.1 file for the second head, but its contents are being derived from the defaults. Basically, the panel is not properly saving the state of the second panel at session logout (yes I've tried saving the session). It requires that you reconfigure the panel after each login, and I consider that unusable for most users. I have now a second screen to try this non xinerama setup, but I have two problems: - I don't really know how to configure dual head without xinerama - anyway, with randr 1.2 I don't think it's possible anymore to have this setup Do you still have the problem and can you provide informations about your config? The firmware for the various keyspan devices are also not included in the built kernel. it never was enabled in debian since a long time due to questionable license text, see http://wiki.debian.org/KernelFirmwareLicensing#head-8eb93faca600756acd06fc271633bf81254ac1a5 I worked around this by using make menuconfig and make-kpkg and rebuilding the kernel, but it would be nice if these devices were supported in the default Debian binary kernel linux-image package. you might want to ask the vendor to change license to bsd as he may no longer care, then it is no trouble to distribute in debian main. regards -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The [E] after Install tasks: above is for a misconfigured X server. Aside from that, there was no problem with that installation phase. Contrary to various reports on the Web, I had no problem with the CD-ROM drivers. PROBLEM: Debian-Installer kernel crashes while booting: Illegal Instruction, Fast Data Access MMU Miss, Stack Underflow. Solution: always turn power off after running Solaris and before running any Linux kernel, including the installer. PROBLEM: Debian-Installer kernel hangs while booting; last message is Booting Linux Solution: boot installer with the command install video=atyfb:off. PROBLEM: Debian-Installer TUI is unusable: the highlighted menu item looks the same as the unhighlighted items. Solution: boot installer with the command install video=atyfb:off DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text. PROBLEM: newly installed Debian hangs while booting kernel; last message is Booting Linux Solution: boot Debian with the command Linux video=atyfb:off. Later you can add the line 'append=video=atyfb:off' before the first blank line in /etc/silo.conf, so you won't have to type this parameter every time you boot. PROBLEM: monitor says Sync. Out of Range. Solution: type Control-Alt-F2 to get a console. Log in as root. Stop the X server. (I used /etc/init.d/kdm stop, but you'll do something else if you don't use KDE. Possibly you can just replace the k with a g.) Add the line 'Option reference_clock 29.5 MHz' under 'Section Device' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Start the X server. PROBLEM: unpleasant screen flicker, and inappropriate font sizes. This is because the X Server didn't auto-identify your monitor. Solution: look up your monitor's specifications. Open a super-user terminal window. Run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and mostly accept defaults, but change where necessary to match your specifications. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf manually to set the display size in millimeters (I added DisplaySize 306 230 under 'Section Monitor') and re-add the reference_clock line because dpkg-reconfigure will have removed it. Restart the X server. PROBLEM: Debian-Installer overwrote the Solaris partition's bootloader, and Solaris won't boot any more! Bug#449008: emacs22-common: enable-local-variables :safe mode acts like :all
tags 449008 fixed-upstream quit Hi, Drake Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The source of this bug: `hack-local-variables' makes lists of `risky-vars' and `unsafe-vars' to strip out when in :safe mode, as (variable . value) conses. It then avoids setting variables where the name of the variable is `eq' to the cons. Probably someone changed the format of the function-local list variables and then forgot to update all the places they were referenced. Thank you very much for finding and reporting this issue. I've confirmed that it still applies upstream and installed your patch in the trunk and in the Emacs 22 release branch for the upcoming 22.2 release. On second thought the latter should be done in all cases so that other environments benefit from it. The latter solution is wrong. The Xsession.d scripts _prepends_ things to STARTUP. Thus having seahorse before dbus is the right solution. If you check your seahorse-agents environment you'll see that it does actually has the dbus environment variables. And it would be a good idea to also do the former. The former is a bad workaround for programs that use dbus (and especially dbus activation) in the wrong way. Sjoerd -- Friction is a drag.

A cool fix is described here: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about834.html In short: In /usr/lib/iceweasel/components/nsFilePicker.js replace (near line 273) compMgr.registerFactoryLocation(FILEPICKER_CID, FilePicker JS Component, // *really long comment here* , // *really long comment here* fileSpec, location, type); with compMgr.registerFactoryLocation(FILEPICKER_CID, FilePicker JS Component, // *really long comment here* FILEPICKER_CONTRACTID, // *really long comment here* fileSpec, location, type); The resulting Dialog is much more useable. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-k7 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) (ignored: LC_ALL set to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages iceweasel depends on: ii debianutils 2.25.1 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii fontconfig 2.4.2-1.2generic font configuration library ii libatk1.0-0 1.20.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.6.1-1+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.4.10-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.4.2-1.2generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.5-1+b1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.2.2-3GCC support library ii libglib2.0-02.14.1-5 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.1-1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhunspell-1.1-0 1.1.9-1 spell checker and morphological an ii libjpeg62 6b-14The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libnspr4-0d 4.6.7-1 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii libnss3-0d 3.11.7-1 Network Security Service libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.18.3-1 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-3 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++6 4.2.2-3 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-62:1.0.3-7X11 client-side library ii libxft2 2.1.12-2 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxinerama11:1.0.2-1X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxp6 1:1.0.0.xsf1-1 X Printing Extension (Xprint) clie ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-1X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii procps 1:3.2.7-5/proc file system utilities ii psmisc 22.5-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-6 compression library - runtime iceweasel recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. When you've been started by a session daemon for an X session, you can expect DISPLAY to be set correctly too.. For everything else you will need some other way to recover them. In seahorse's case, it should implement some D-Bus api to recover the socket paths that you'd normally get from the GPG_AGENT_INFO and SSH_AUTH_SOCK environment variables. The problem is not about seahorse. It is about processes spawned by the keybindings. They can be evolution and epiphany, but also, depending on the preferences, balsa, thunderbird, firefox, etc. Here the problem lies in a variable that is passed blindly by all these programs to gpg. And you can't fix all these applications, nor can you expect gnupg to implement a D-Bus API just to recover the path to a socket. -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Hi, On Friday 02 November 2007 15:03, Luke Yelavich wrote: In ubuntu, we have added what is now known as dh_icons to the xmedcon source package. Can you send me the diff of the rule files? I will then add it with the next version (I don't think it is more urgent, do you?) Just for info and keeping Ubuntu an debian together. With the next version I will also get back to leave the included libnifti-sources in the source distribution. The build will of course be against the debian libnifti. That way I don't have to fiddle with the ./configure and stay closer to the original source. thanks for your time. Bug#449040: update-manager: Smart Upgrade removes packages with dependency problems without confirmation
Package: update-manager Version: 0.68.debian-2 Severity: grave In contrast to synaptic, update-manager's Smart Upgrade function doesn't ask for confirmation of changes when an upgrade would cause packages which would end up with dependency problems are to be removed. Cases in point: the update of network-manager to version 0.6.5-1 caused network-manager-gnome to be removed because the new binary package was not yet in unstable. More recently, an update to apt caused all packages which depended on libapt-pkg-libc6.6-6-4.6 to be removed. This was an extremely grave situation, because it removed aptitude and most of the other package management tools, including synaptic and update-manager. Fortunately, apt-get was not removed, so the situation could be remedied. IMHO update-manager Smart Upgrade should always allow the user to confirm proposed changes. The actual installations and removals that are going to be done are not always clear from reading the changelog entries, and also the user has to choose between Smart Upgrade and a normal upgrade before even being able to view the changelogs. After reading them, users may have forgotten whether they chose Smart Upgrade or normal upgrade in the first place. (This happened to me several times.) retitle 448158 FTBFS: Fortran MPI check fails thanks Hello Ondrej, This is a separate issue, and should have been a new bug. The limited platform availability of OpenMPI is a non-issue, and I was about to close it after a week of inactivity. I've retitled this bug to your issue, which is an FTBFS, and will try to get to it sometime next week. I'll also see if I can build and test petsc4py and libmesh using OpenMPI. LAM development has stopped, and its developers have moved to OpenMPI. Please see item 9 in http://www.open-mpi.org/faq/?category=general and the LAM homepage at http://www.lam-mpi.org/ for more info. I therefore feel very strongly that it is worth trying to make OpenMPI the primary base for MPI software in the lenny release, rather than reverting to the deprecated lam distribution. On the other hand, the lam build option for PETSc should still work using fakeroot debian/rules PETSC_MPI=lam binary -- or if it doesn't work, then please file a separate bug against petsc. Next time please check the bug more carefully to see if it is the same thing you're reporting, and if it's not, then open a new one. Thanks, Adam On Fri, 2007-11-02 at 02:48 +0100, Ondrej Certik wrote: Package: petsc --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Hi Adam, I have some bad news - I am not able to build the package from source. Sorry I didn't find this earlier - I just tested my program with the binary libmesh package and that worked. Maybe also it was the case that it built, but something with fortran has changed, since petsc also doesn't built anymore. Also petsc prints some very ugly messages, see for example: http://code.google.com/p/petsc4py/issues/detail?id=9 I fear we will have to switch to lam, to satisfy both petsc4py and libmesh. I am going to try to build everything myself using lam and if I succeed, I'll send you a patch. Then whatever is spawning these apps is what's the issue here.. Bug#443690: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#443690: xfwm4: wrong display chosen in multi-head setup when using startup notification
reassign #443690 xserver-xorg thanks On Sun, Sep 23, 2007 at 09:28:49AM +, Mark Nipper wrote: Package: xfwm4 Version: 4.4.1-3 Severity: important I've been running xfce4 for awhile now using a multi-head disply configuration (:0.0 and :0.1, no Xinerama). Most of my menu items have Use startup notification checked. Up until a recent update (I assume the update to 4.4.1-3 today when I ran an update), this wasn't an issue as any application I would start up would end up displaying on the display from which I clicked on the menu item initially. Now, however, when I try to open an application from the menu which has startup notification enabled, the application always starts on display :0.0 even though my mouse and the menu itself is displayed on :0.1. Unchecking the option in the menu editor allows all of the applications I try to open on :0.1 to show up correctly on that particular display. I assume the startup notification feature somehow uses an invisible widget or something to work in the first place and for whatever reason, this is always being bound to display :0.0 currently. This is purely conjecture of course though. I can downgrade to 4.4.1-2+b1 again if you want me to in order to test this. But I might have to rebuild against Xorg 1.4. I'm not certain though. Actually, I guess it might even be a feature of Xorg 1.4 since that was also upgraded in my update today I believe. If you don't think anything that changed between say 4.4.1-2 and 4.4.1-3 would have affected this, you might bounce this over to the Xorg package maintainers. I imagine other people will probably run into this problem though if that is the case and the xfce maintainers might now about it upstream already too. A priori, nothing in the -3 upgrade could have induced that behavior. Maybe in the -2 upgrade, but if it was working... Anyway, dual-head and xinerama are dead now that xserver 1.4 is out, it's replaced by randr 1.2 (not for every drivers but...).non-xinerama dual head is dead completely, AFAIK, so it may be your problem. Maybe your driver isn't randr-aware but there was some changes in the xserver. You could try with Xfce running with another window manager to test, too. Bug#447094: [issue] hgmerge: uses non-POSIX syntax `type' in /bin/sh script [priority=bug]
Hi, This is the Debian bug #447094 ( http://bugs.debian.org/447094 ) The short story is that 'type' is not allowed (by POSIX) in #!/bin/sh scripts (in particular hgmerge) In the debian package, I change hgmerge to be a #!/bin/bash script. On 02/11/2007, Ricardo Mones wrote: You cannot pretend claws-mail (or any other program) to know how to decode arbitrary encoded data from all its potential callers. Ricardo, this is the code that gets called when claws is invoked with 'claws --compose mailto:something-or-other'. Since everything from the mailto: onwards is by definition an URI, it *must* be URI-encoded (it would be a bug if it weren't!). So it's not a matter of decoding arbitrary encoded data, it's about handlilng URIs the way they are supposed to be handled. The data should reach command line already decoded by the browser calling claws-mail. This is incorrect. Supose you have a link in a web page to send a message to J. Random Hacker Co. [EMAIL PROTECTED]. We could not send this address to claws-mail with claws-mail --compose mailto:J. Random Hacker Co. [EMAIL PROTECTED] For two reasons: 1) the shell will separate the URL after J. 2) even if we quoted it to make the whole address one word, it results in an invalid URI, because it contains naked spaces, punctuation and even an which would get the URI parser mightily confused If not that's a bug in the browser, not in claws-mail. Which browser are you using? I'm using a script I wrote (attached) to make it possible to use claws as a MUA for debian's reportbug (in fact, this very bug report was sent using it!). To use it with reportbug, you use reportbug --mua /path/to/claws-recompose package Be kind to it, it's still unpolished, I intend to contribute it to claws tools. But you can reproduce it just as easily with mozilla-* (and I guess with any browser) with the attached trivial html file. This is definitely a bug in claws, not anywhere else. Bug#449036: initramfs-tools: mkinitramfs - insufficient inclusion of busybox for
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.85h Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Hello initramfs-tools team: I routinely use debootstrap and chroot to create stock debian images for mass deployment. A recent hair-pulling session occurred for me when I chose to create and mount the target root LVM volumes of the new images using the /dev/volume-group-name/volume-name taxonomy instead of /dev/mapper/volume-group-name-volume-name. This difference is critical as the mkinitramfs script relies on the user having mounted their root in the 2nd form in order to notify said user that they must install busybox to satisfy the needed lvm utilitiy library dependencies in their new ramdisk so that they can boot from their lvm volume. It also relies on that mount being for root ('/' in the output of 'mount') in the first place, which in my usage as described, would also fail that test. Observe in the code: # Busybox if [ ${BUSYBOX} = n ] || [ ! -e ${BUSYBOXDIR}/busybox ]; then mv ${DESTDIR}/bin/sh.shared ${DESTDIR}/bin/sh # those root need busybox eval $(mount | awk '/ \/ / {print r_dev= $1; exit}') if [ ${r_dev#/dev/mapper/} != ${r_dev} ] \ || [ ${r_dev#/dev/md} != ${r_dev} ]; then echo Warning: Busybox is required for successful boot! I think a much better means of testing would be to parse the intended kernel version's /boot/*.config file to check for LVM=Y|M status in the compiled kernel. But honestly, what I _really_ think is needed is that busybox should be made a required dependency of initramfs-tools. There is no point in beating around the bush of the many problems with linked-in dependencies of these ramdisks' utilities because of a lack of busybox, much less the uselessness of a broken ramdisk with no working shell. The ramdisks' utilities/libs are also heavily stripped which means I had near-zero inituitive diagnostic information displayed upon failure of the lvm mounts. I don't think the embedded device users' edge case (furtively scrimping bytes) is worth catering to at such a high cost to basic system usability, much less the potential debugging burden that is shifted by such decisions from highly skilled embedded device engineers/tinkerers to hapless end users running off-the-shelf hardware and (more or less) common software setups. Another problem I've observed because of this scrimping is that while the ramdisk supports IP, it doesn't support DNS and will be happy to _not_ tell you why (unsatisfied dependencies on /lib/libnss_dns* /lib/libnss_files* /lib/libresolv* libs not caught by the initramfs-tools hook functions). This is not critical to system operation however, and is most certainly outside a normal use case of the ramdisk's made by initramfs-tools (which should _NOT_ be a toolchain for embedded device use). This bug escaped dev firstly because it is built around assumptions in the the ways that d-i would configure a root-volume-on-lvm - which is totally understandable - but MOSTLY because of ridiculous bit-pinching. Dependencies in ramdisks should be noted, but shedding them at ANY COST (like losing the ability to BOOT) is insane. Let bleeding-edge people bleed (and by their own hand, for trying to run hardware that is too limited for the newest software) and fix - normal systems should just boot. Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: chandler-desktop Version : 0.7 Upstream Author : http://www.osafoundation.org/ * URL : http://chandlerproject.org/Developers/WebHome * License : Apache License Programming Lang: Python Description : Personal Information Management application Chandler Project is an open source, standards-based personal information manager (PIM) built around small group collaboration and a core set of information management workflows modelled on Inbox usage patterns and David Allen's GTD methodology. The Chandler Desktop application manages calendar events, task items, messages, notes and other types of personal information. Chandler Desktop can publish its data to a Chandler Server. Chandler Desktop is also a WebDAV, CalDAV, and iCal/webcal client. I don't have the time to package Chandler soon, so I hope somebody else is willing to take care of it. I'll happily help out with any problems if the packaging is done within the Python Apps Team. Cheers, Bernd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I noticed there's no problem with fluxbox for example. I use xfce4-terminal. In fact the problem is that, if the command given is the complete path, xfdesktop fails to run console applications. A workaround would be to hack our script generating the Debian menu from the Debian menu files to strip the complete path. Stay tuned, I'll check that, and maybe report upstream. Bug#418828: /var/lib/tomcat5.5 doesn't belong to tomcat-user after installation
On Nov 02, 2007 at 12:50, Armin Fuerst praised the llamas by saying: Servlets should get the temp dir location from the servlet context if they need to write temporary files. Trying to create files in the current dir is very broken AFAICT, so I don't see that this is a Tomcat bug. Closing. This is a good argument, but why make my life as sysadmin more difficult than necessary? It's not my fault it any servlet wants to write into this location? Why not make everything world-writeable? Network daemons should have permission to write to as little as possible. If you want to be more permissive and understand the risks, then you can run a chmod yourself. It's hardly onerous. However, for a default install, tomcat should be as secure as possible. Obviously you should be fixing your servlets and not giving tomcat more permissions than it needs. If changing the permission is a security issue, I agree, but at least until now I don't see a disadvantage. I did an ` aptitude install apache-dbg libc6-dbg` and reenabled mod_backtrace and mod_whatkilledus, but I 'm afraid, the messages are all the same: # gdb --args apache -F -X -f /etc/apache/httpd.conf GNU gdb 6.4.90-debian Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Did I forget something to enable these debug symbols, or does it suffice to simply install the packages? regards Gerhard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
