Bug#452698: pdfedit: Letters drop out of printed document

During the pdfedit session, text appears to display correctly. However,
when I save as a PDF, and then open in evince and print the document,
some capital letters randomly drop out of the printed version.

I didn't hear back from you. Can you still reproduce this bug?

Varun

Bug#451765: of course [space] does _not_ work

2007-12-01 Thread Harald Dunkel

Hi Michelle,

I am not stupid. I am on Unix for 25 years. And since 0.95a
I've got Linux on my desktop.

Of course I tried the [space] and [enter] keys to select and
deselect items in the preferences menu. But it doesn't work.
Using the mouse in an xterm does work, but on the console I
don't have mouse support installed.

I can reproduce this for i386 and amd64 using aptitude 0.4.9-2.

BTW, using [Shift-D] to hide the lower part of the Preferences
screen doesn't work, either. I can use the arrow keys to scroll
through the preferences options. though.

Regards

Harri

Bug#452574: [Pkg-hpijs-devel] Bug#452574: spurious version numbering for hpijs packages

Please consider introducing  a consistent version number for all hplip
 and hpijs related packages.

Fabian,

Thanks for your report.

As you maybe aware we have a large amount of fixes to get hplip into a stable
state before I would be happy for release with Debian. The consistency of
version numbers whilst a presentation issue, doesn't detract from the
functionality so will be looked at, but with a low priority.

Bug#453783: apache2: CVE-2007-4465

2007-12-01 Thread Paul Szabo
Package: apache2
Severity: grave
Justification: user security hole

Seems to me that Debian (sarge or etch or even sid) apache packages are
not yet patched against

  http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2007-4465
  http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2007-4465

Seems to me that the obvious workarounds of turning Indexes off or
having an index.html everywhere, protects just fine; and wonder why
Apache does not say so.

Bug#453784: virtualbox-ose: Please remove the registration dialog

2007-12-01 Thread Johan Walles
Package: virtualbox-ose
Version: 1.5.2-dfsg2-2
Severity: wishlist

When I started Virtualbox for the first time, I got a dialog asking me to
register my
name and e-mail address.

The quickest way I found to get rid of it was to fill in some junk information.

I would have preferred not having to fill in junk information the first time I
started
Virtualbox.

Note: I started Virtualbox the first time by typing virtualbox at the command
line.

Is there some reason xulrunner is not in that list? Liferea picks up
its (default) rendering engine implementation from /usr/lib/xulrunner,
thus this default configuration means there's no flash support in
 feeds.

I'm CC:ing xulrunner's maintainer in case he knows a reason.

There is somewhat a reason : we need a central directory where all
plugins would be installed, and every application supporting NPAPI
plugins would pick in this directory. Where this should be has not
been decided. I wonder if /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins shouldn't be
enough, though it's kind of unfair for konqueror and others.

Bug#453804: stellarium: segfaults on startup

2007-12-01 Thread Ramakrishnan Muthukrishnan
Package: stellarium
Version: 0.9.0-1+b1
Severity: grave

Hi,

I installed stellarium on my Debian box (details below) and invoked it
from commandline inside gnome-terminal. The splash screen came up with
a progress bar and after the progress bar hit the end, it segfaulted.
Here is the info printed on gnome-terminal.

I have tagged it as grave because the package is unusable. It segfaults
at startup itself.

Seems to me that the obvious workarounds of turning Indexes off or
having an index.html everywhere, protects just fine; and wonder why
 Apache does not say so.

This is actually a bug in MSIE, see CVE-2006-5152. Sid and lenny have
the workaround, but there is currently no plan to backport it to
sarge and etch (as it is of low impact).

Besides switching directory indexes of, setting AddDefaultCharset also
protects from the issue. AddDefaultCharset is on in the default
configurations in sarge and etch.

Cheers,

Bug#453805: postfix-doc relies on the presence on postconf

2007-12-01 Thread Sylvain Joyeux
Package: postfix-doc
Version: 2.4.6-2
Severity: normal

The postinst script of postfix-doc relies on the presence of postconf,
but the package does not depend on postfix

I think that postfix-doc should *not* depend on postfix, as it is quite
nice to be able to install the documentation on a desktop workstation,
the postfix server being on a remote machine.

Hi,

While reviewing some packages, your package came up as a possible
candidate for removal from Debian, because:

 * last maintainer upload long ago
 * superseded RTAI-wise and kernel-wise (see #378967)

If you think that it should be orphaned instead of being removed from
Debian, please reply to this bug and tell so.

If you agree, sending the following commands to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
should do it (after replacing nn with this bug's number):
severity nn normal
reassign nn ftp.debian.org
retitle nn RM: packagename -- RoM; reasons
thanks

For more information, see
http://wiki.debian.org/ftpmaster_Removals
http://ftp-master.debian.org/removals.txt

If you disagree and want to continue to maintain this package, please
just close this bug, preferably in an upload also fixing the other
issues.

Thank you,

Bug 445215 is about egrep being a ton slower than doing the same thing in PERL.

There's obviously some kind of relationship between these issues :-).

needed only after anna has been run. This could also include in-target for
 example. Not sure though.

I like this idea.

Bug#453809: links should be absolute if browser is invoked on the filesystem

2007-12-01 Thread Philipp Kern
Package: dhelp
Version: 0.6.0
Severity: normal

Hi there,

if I invoke dhelp on the console it fires up a browser with
`file:///usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html', fine so far. If I retrieve the
section overview now the links are absolute to the document root
(i.e. `/doc/foo'). Thus in the browser it gets converted to
`file:///doc/foo', which is just broken. The documentation isn't really
surfable due to this issue.

On an unrelated note I somehow got `System/Administration/' in the index
which isn't generated (in the section overview it's a child of
`Applications').

Kind regards,
Philipp Kern

Bug#453783: apache2: CVE-2007-4465

2007-12-01 Thread Paul Szabo
Dear Stefan,

This is actually a bug in MSIE, see CVE-2006-5152.

Not a bug in IE only, I have a demo that exploits it under Firefox.
(In fact my demo does not seem to work for IE, yet...)

Not really related to CVE-2006-5152. In fact that is a non-issue: the
CVE references my posts, but fails to reference my retraction
http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2006-October/049828.html

... no plan to backport ... it is of low impact.

I do not think that XSS and cookie theft (thus access to all data
protected by web login) is of low impact.

... setting AddDefaultCharset also protects from the issue.
AddDefaultCharset is on in the default configurations ...

Thanks for that other workaround: yes it seems to protect my machines.
Now I am puzzled why AddDefaultCharset was commented out in my configs.
Still puzzled why Apache did not mention these workarounds.

Cheers,

pushd/popd commands are available only on bash and this leads to FTBFS on
systems where /bin/sh is linked to /bin/dash.
Even if Debian is not affected, it could be worth fix it for compatibility
purposes.

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

  * debian/rules: do not use pushd/popd, not supported by dash. Fix FTBFS

 Do something like

I do not see the benefit. It is just less readable.

Also put it after the export line, for fuller user control.

I will not do that either, since there exporting the unset variable
does no harm, OTOH people will be surprised that things do not work if
they forget to export their customizations.

hi,

inkscape reproducibly crashes, when ungrouping a group of objects, which

to reproduce the crash, you can use the attached file: just select all
objects, group them and then try to ungroup them. inkscape should crash
at this point.

Bug#453812: cpp: package provides a dangling symlink: FAQ.gz

2007-12-01 Thread Ernest ter Kuile
Package: cpp
Version: 4:4.2.1-6
Severity: minor
Tags:

This bug involves more then one package. I'm reporting this on package
cpp, but package gcc contains the link, while package gcc-4.2 is missing the
relevant file. I was unable to report a bug on package gcc since the package
is a dependancy package (but dpkg -L gcc lists the dangling link, not cpp).

Problem:
symbolic link /usr/share/doc/cpp/FAQ.gz is pointing
to ../gcc-4.2/FAQ.gz which does not exist.

2 solutions:
- add /usr/share/doc/gcc-4.2-base/FAQ.gz to package gcc-4.2 (like
  in gcc-4.1).
- remove symlink from package gcc.

but IMHO:
Cross package symboling links can never be very solid, and are asking
for trouble. So I suspect simply removing the invalid link is the
best solution.

Confirmed. The problems is the use of popen() if an image is displayed
which needs to be converted by imagemagick:

if (NULL == loader) {
/* no loader found, try to use ImageMagick's convert */
snprintf(command,sizeof(command),
 convert -depth 8 \%s\ ppm:-,filename);
if (NULL == (fp = popen(command,r)))
return NULL;
loader = ppm_loader;
}

Since fbi is not suitable for non-interactive use and the filename would
need to contain the commands to be executed I don't consider this a
security problem. Still, it should be fixed.

CCing upstream. Gerd, the popen() call needs to be sanitised or replaced.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#453783: apache2: CVE-2007-4465

2007-12-01 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Hi Paul,

On Saturday 01 December 2007, you wrote:
This is actually a bug in MSIE, see CVE-2006-5152.

Not a bug in IE only, I have a demo that exploits it under Firefox.
(In fact my demo does not seem to work for IE, yet...)

If you can exploit that with Firefox, Firefox should be fixed. Can you
give more details? I would be very interested.

Not really related to CVE-2006-5152. In fact that is a non-issue:
the CVE references my posts, but fails to reference my retraction
 http://lists.grok.org.uk/pipermail/full-disclosure/2006-October/049
828.html

Any broswer that interprets ascii as utf7 without being told to do so
is severely buggy. And CVE-2006-5152 is about MSIE, not about Apache.
Your retraction was about Apache.

... no plan to backport ... it is of low impact.

I do not think that XSS and cookie theft (thus access to all data
protected by web login) is of low impact.

If it affects only one buggy browser, it's low impact. And since the
patch for the workaround is not that small (and is changing default
behaviour and is adding a new config directive), I didn't want to
backport it to stable. If it affects more browsers, I might
reconsider.

... setting AddDefaultCharset also protects from the issue.
AddDefaultCharset is on in the default configurations ...

Thanks for that other workaround: yes it seems to protect my
machines. Now I am puzzled why AddDefaultCharset was commented out
in my configs. Still puzzled why Apache did not mention these
 workarounds.

AddDefaultCharset has some often unwanted side effects. It overrides
the charset in meta http-equiv tags. See

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=397886
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=415775

It is not the default anymore in lenny and sid.

Cheers,
Stefan

Bug#453817: Disabling input plugin(s) segfaults audacious

2007-12-01 Thread Antti Pyykko
Package: audacious
Version: 1.4.2-1
Severity: important

Audacious will segfault on startup if there are disabled input plugins
defined in config file. Removing disabled_iplugins-line from
~/.config/audacious/config works around the problem.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Remove old config files
[206834] [13:36] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % rm -rf .config/audacious

2. Start audacious:
[206835] [13:36] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % audacious
I/O warning : failed to load external entity
/home/pyksy/.config/audacious/playlist.xspf

3. Open preferences by pressing CTRL-P or via the pop-up menu item Preferences

4. In the preferences, go to Plugins page

5. On the Plugins-page, select Decoders tab

6. Disable any decoder. I disabled the first one on the list, Apple
   Lossless Plugin

7. Click Close

8. Close Audacious by clicking on the X on top right corner.

9. Start audacious again:
[206836] [13:37] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ % audacious
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped) audacious

Audacious segfaults.

Audacious will start again if I manually remove the line
disabled_iplugins=alac.so
from ~/.config/audacious/config with a text editor.

Core was generated by `audacious'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

2007-12-01 Thread Albert Astals Cid
This is even more important because if you loop it enough times, the strncat
ends up overflowing the paperswitch static allocated space and it ends up
crashing, my suggestion would be to init paperswith to empty and also check
if strlen is 0 on the if, and then doing the strncat of both the switch and
the paper name.

(as a side note, the references to `mkisofs' in the documentation would need to

Hi Luca,

thanks for the two reports, I've fixed both bugs in svn,
the fixes will be shipped with the next upload in Debian.
I won't update the package before you have your
DebianImportFreeze, so there should be nothing to sync
for Hardy again.

I guess I'll have to request an automatic sync later, as
the package contains changes in Ubuntu now?

2007-12-01 Thread Nis Martensen
Package: mysql-server-5.0
Version: 5.0.32-7etch3

We were wondering why upgrading mysql-server kept breaking access for

Hi

I think it shouldnt have a apt-get-able part. The builldds have it to
take less time until packages are built, but thats it. If we would add
the ability for everyone to use it with apt directly, instead of
handpicking single debs in case something fails we would overload the
machine, as every user out there would use it, thanks to the
versionitis people have...

The mirror push is run twice a day, that should be enough for the
average needs, and the seldom cases where only an upload in incoming can
fix something one can wget the deb directly from there.

Bug#449287: /etc/init.d/exim4 gives no such process error when stopping exim4

I've been seeing the same issue for some time on several systems,
 therefore raising priority.

Here's the debug (set -x) output for the stop command during shutdown.
 Hope it helps.

At first glance, the problem seems to be that first 'killproc' is being
called and later also start-stop-daemon. And then later there also a
 'kill -0'...

[...]
 + /sbin/start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile /var/run/exim4/exim.pid --retry 5
 --quiet --oknodo
/sbin/start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 2121: No such process
 + status=0
[...]

Hello,
I can reproduce this, the error is generated when killproc invokes

/sbin/start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile /var/run/exim4/exim.pid --retry 5
--quiet --oknodo

It is easy to reproduce, start exim, invoke the abovementioned s-s-d
command. stracing s-s-d seems to suggest that s-s-d expects exim4 to
remove the pidfile when it terminates, but exim does not. s-s-d then
tries to terminate exim4 *again* and fails.

 Severity: minor

When I run dvdrecord as non-root, the error message that it gives me mentions
 cdrecord instead of dvdrecord,

dvdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are

There may be other hardcoded references to cdrecord, the source could use some

Bug#451767: reason why libicu36 depends on lib32icu36

2007-12-01 Thread Jay Berkenbilt

(This is just a note for the bug report; not explicitly copying
submitters.)

Okay, I've figured out the exact mechanics of why this bug is
happening. Both lib32icu36 and libicu36 have shlibs files, and both
packages contain multiple shared libraries, some of which reference
other ones. This causes dh_shlibdeps for each package to make a
reference back to first package whose shlibs file satisfies the
requirement. Both lib32icu36 and libicu36 decide that the needed
libraries are contained in lib32icu36. For lib32icu36, dh_shlibdeps
(or dpkg-shlibdeps) filters out the reference to itself, but this
obviously doesn't work for libicu36 since lib32icu36 is not libicu36.
Doing things in the normal way will always make one of these packages
depend on the other. My solution is going to be to just filter the
substvars files between dh_shlibdeps and dh_gencontrol.

Bug#453823: dependency problem with vlc

2007-12-01 Thread Harald Dunkel

Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.c-3+b1

Hi folks,

If I try to install vlc on i386, then it complains about two
missing *.deb files:

# apt-get install vlc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc: Depends: vlc-nox (= 0.8.6.c-3+b1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libcdio6 but it is not installable
Depends: libiso9660-4 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

On amd64 vlc installs fine. libcdio7 and libiso9660-5 are installed
on both.

Regards

Harri

Bug#453824: Incorrect documentation for thttpd 2.25b-3

Package: thttpd

According to the documentation there is a symlinkcheck and nosymlinkcheck
configuration option that may be used in thttpd.conf. According to the source
code this is not the case. The attached patch fixes the documentation to
conform to the source code configuration options symlinks and nosymlinks.

Naturally this may be included in Debians thttpd package under the license used.

Bug#450725: rkhunter: Spurious message: gpg: WARNING: unsafe ownership on configuration file `/home/user/.gnupg/gpg.conf'

2007-12-01 Thread Richard Lewis
The cron job produces this every day, but the file in question has
permissions 0600. It seems this happens because rkhunter runs gpg as
a user (presumably root) other than the owner of gpg.conf.

This warning isn't issued by rkhunter but by GnuPG itself.

This is linked to the *ownership* (and not permissions) of gpg.conf. I
would guess your file is owned by another user as yours (which is a
potential security risk), either resulting from moving this file from
another user or running gpg with sudo.

sorry, i meant to say that the gpg file is owned by the correct user
(user:user) rather than saying it has mode 600, which is clearly not
relevent here :)

I get this warning when using 'sudo gpg --version', as gpg still
considers its home to be /home/user/.gnupg/ (try 'sudo echo $HOME' to
 understand why).

aha, thanks, i undersatnd now: I am using anacron, and restartiog it
via hibernate, which was called with 'sudo hibernate', this means
all the anacron jobs inherit HOME=/home/user instead of /root which
causes the problem.

Bug#453756: git-core should depend on curl

Hi,

 Package: git-core

 Severity: grave
 Justification: renders package unusable

This is not justified at all (I don't even think it's a bug at all) - see
below...

I've installed git-core and tried to clone a repository

   yyy$ git clone xxx
Initialized empty Git repository in /yyy/xxx
/usr/bin/git-clone: line 37: curl: command not found

You've skipped the important part in xxx - you're accessing a repository
using the HTTP protocol - which requires curl. However, there are a lot of
other possible ways to access repositories (e.g. git://, ssh://) which do not
require curl. So there is no strict requirement for any Git user to install
curl - that's why curl is only recommended by git-core rather than required.

A recommendation is defined as a package that would be found together with
this one in all but unusual installations, which imho is exactly the case for
curl here. If you do not install recommended packages automatically, you
should have a look at the documentation if something fails.

 Versions of packages git-core recommends:
pn curl none (no description available)

Sebastian

Description: GNU Eiffel compiler
GNU compiler and associated tools for the Eiffel object-oriented language.

SmartEiffel is an Eiffel compiler for the Eiffel language defined by Bertrand
Meyer. SmartEiffel is the GNU Eiffel Compiler. SmartEiffel also features many
Eiffel tools and a very large library of classes: collections, dictionaries,
linked lists, sets and many other data structures, portable input output
facilities, iterators, number computation, sorting, etc.
 .
Eiffel provides a strongly typed, compiled language, supporting multiple
inheritance and design by contract. For further information, see
 http://smarteiffel.loria.fr/ and http://www.eiffel.com/.
 .
smarteiffel2 is the latest upstream beta release of SmartEiffel; because of
many incompatibilities between it and SmartEiffel 1, it has been packaged
separately. Code written for SmartEiffel 1.1 is likely to need a lot of
reworking before it will compile with SmartEiffel 2.
 .
Note that Gobo is not compatible with this version of SmartEiffel and is not
likely to become compatible again in the future, because of philosophical
differences about the direction of Eiffel development. With version 2,
SmartEiffel has begun to diverge into a separate language from other Eiffels.

Bug#453827: mutt: Deletion of attachments from signed messages is unsupported

2007-12-01 Thread Carsten Hey
Package: mutt
Priority: minor
Tags: upstream

Hi,

mutt says:

| Deletion of attachments from encrypted messages is unsupported.

but it is only a signed message, not a encrypted one.

Please support deleting attachments from signed messages or at least fix
this error-message. Of course you would lose the signature, but mutt
users should know what they do (at least after Are you really
sure, this will ...[yN]?).

Trying to delete the signature leads to the same error message.

My mutt version is 1.5.16-2~heyc1, which is a, propably rather outdated,
backport from experimental, including the glorious chdir-patch.

Thanks,
Carsten

Bug#452994: Unable to enable the Debian menu in the GNOME panel

2007-12-01 Thread Johan Walles
I'm unable to enable the Debian menu:

I right-click the Program menu.
I choose Edit Menus.
I go through all menus listed in the left pane of the UI and verify
that everything I can check is checked.

Everything is checked.
There is no mention of any Debian menu.

How do I enable the Debian menu?

I have gnome-menus 2.20.1-1 and gnome-panel 2.18.3-2 installed.

  Regards //Johan

Bug#453833: GeoIP.dat doesn't get updated very often

2007-12-01 Thread Carlos Izquierdo
Package: libgeoip1
Version: 1.3.17-1.1

Hi,

I've seen that the /usr/share/GeoIP/GeoIP.dat file belongs to the libgeoip1
package and thus gets rarely updated. I would suggest splitting this package
into libgeoip1 and libgeoip1-data (or similar, architecture-independent
package) and updating the -data package each month or so.

Thank you!
