Thiemo Nagel reported (to the Debian project) that a specially-crafted
file could cause gzip to segfault or hang. The file is attached below.
Also attached is a patch that addresses the problem. With this patch
attached, gzip will simply report a malformed input file and exit as
desired.

I also ruled out the possibility that it was due to gnupg, the bug is
reproducible
with both gnupg 1.4.6-2 (stable) and gnupg 1.4.

This is a known problem. The issue is that with the recent xorg that are
available in testing/lenny the libvnc.so make the X server crash. The
problem is that the ABI has been changed and the vnc sources are too hard
to change to make a vnc lib.

Yes, it seems that AOL (or their representative) has reverted the
changes. GAIM 2.0.0beta5 from Etch has connected successfully without
any patching. The situation was different few hours ago.
