Bug#523187: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#523187: Same issue for me
Looks like a splashy related problem Thomas, do you also have splashy installed, ie. do you have a file /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh ? I have :-( So, then I tried your trick with renaming lsb-base-loging.sh and then the update works with no problem. Looks like uninstalling splashy for now... (do you still need the sh -x output?) Bug#523184: [dpkg-dev] dpkg-source reveals personal information with Format: 3.0 (quilt)
On Wed, 08 Apr 2009, Resul Cetin wrote: I noticed that `dpkg-source -b SOURCEDIR` will create a *.debian.tar.gz Only if you use a newer source format (and it's currently not the default format). which includes personal informations. This includes username and group of the current user which creates a package. These informations aren't meant for other people. I find this reasoning too extreme. If the user builds a native package it will also contain a tarball with its current user encoded: $ apt-get source debhelper [...] $ tar ftv debhelper_7.2.7.tar.gz drwxr-xr-x joey/joey 0 2009-03-26 20:20 debhelper/ drwxr-xr-x joey/joey 0 2008-12-17 00:13 debhelper/Debian/ This is the case ever since Debian has existed and it has never been a problem. So the problem is not affecting only Format: 3.0 (quilt). Any upstream tarball also encodes the username of the upstream author: $ tar ztvf zim_0.27.orig.tar.gz|head drwxr-xr-x pardus/pardus 0 2008-11-12 21:02 Zim-0.27/ -r--r--r-- pardus/pardus 35982 2008-11-12 21:02 Zim-0.27/zim.pot Since it doesn't create any problem at unpack time, I don't see a good reason to change this behaviour. In fact it might even be useful to be able to track down who built a package. So I will not change this behaviour without a better rationale. I'll give some time for people to comment (and for you to respond) but without a convincing reason, I'll probably close it or tag it wontfix. Bug#523161: FTBFS: Remove dependency on iso_639.tab file
Quoting Tobias Quathamer (to...@debian.org): Package: geneweb Version: 5.01-8 Severity: serious Tags: patch Hi Christian, I've prepared a patch for you to remove the dependency on the iso_639.tab file. I've built the package successfully here, the language choices in the debconf frontend seem to be sane as well. However, I don't use the package geneweb myself, so it would be great if you could check for yourself if the patch is really complete. Thanks, Tobias. .config, .postinst and mktemplates were the three places where I identified that I was having some use of iso_630.tab. Thanks a lot for the patch. At first glance, it seems correct and it noticeably simplifies the scripts (which is logical as I was more or less mimicing the behaviour of isoquery in some way, with ugly grep|awk scripting). I'll probably prepare a geneweb upload next week-end. Thanks again. PS: we might need to check what packages Build-Depend on iso-codes just to be sure whether some others need that .tab file. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#433312: Workaround...
I just stumbled across another bug that could be fixed by an upgrade, so I started installing a new version. For all others that might want to do that, take care of the following things: * I installed under /usr/local, i.e. the normal './configure' without further arguments. * Check that /usr/local/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf[.d], run ldconfig after changing that file. * The configuration files will end in /usr/local/etc, I just made those symlinks to the original configuration under /etc. Cheers! Bug#442189: race condition
As Eugugene stated, it's because of a race condition. Another related bug, #439031, indicated that multiple gpgv threads run on the same Releases files (once for a deb, again for deb-src line in sources.list) causes a similar stall. I've made a trivial-style repo from dpkg-scanpages (results piped though plain gzip) and set a chrooted etch to download directly from it. It stalled on apt-get update. So that ruled out the http-proxy and mini-dinstall:python:BZ2 issues I was suspecting. What _did_ help was only using a deb-src line against that repo. And I bet that my prior report of success with my new reprepro repositiory was beacuse reprepro uses a non-trivial layout (multiple Packages files). I guess chroots just trigger the race easily for some reason, why else the lack of reportage/fix-urgency? joey -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#522776: debian-policy: mandate existence of a standardised UTF-8 locale
Thorsten Glaser wrote: Giacomo A. Catenazzi dixit: I think you misunderstand the mksh part of the problem. mksh has two modi: a legacy mode, in which it does not make any assumptions about charsets or encodings and is 8-bit clean and mostly 8-bit transparent, safe a few mostly past bugs and imple- mentation shortcomings, and a unicode mode, in which it assumes its input is UTF-8 (although, with ^V, you can still enter non- UTF-8 sequences, and tabcomplete filenames in legacy encodings as well). The unicode mode is enabled with mksh -U or set -U. However, mksh has a feature which automatically enables the uni- code mode if - the current CODESET is UTF-8 (or the locale ends in .utf8 or .UTF-8 or something similar, in some cases), or - the input begins with a UTF-8 BOM. This is good way to do things! The regression test suite merely checks for this feature. To do so, it needs a way to set the checked mksh process' CODESET to UTF-8, which is only possible by setting a non-C/POSIX locale. This means that we make few automatic regression tests ;-) But so, the UTF-8 requirement are a lot narrow than the rest of discussion. I think that we should provide some package that give pbuilder environment a UTF-8 environment. Or a debhelper (or like) utility that construct it for build needs. In this case us_EN.UTF-8 is a sensible locale (we want to test a real locale), but in this case I would also test some UTF-16 or Asian locale (mksh should not assume UTF-8 in these cases). You had already a solution (but embedding in a standard utility is IMHO better, which hide the complexity, and show direct what you need). BTW the locale could be also a pathname, so no root power needs (i.e. for other tests in user gleba). Andrew McMillan dixit: The proposal, at this stage is only that the C.UTF-8 locale is *installed* and *available* by default. Not that it *be* the default, but that it *be there* as a default. This is about what I was to propose, indeed. I agree that we must provide by default also a UTF-8, but I don't like C.UTF-8. A solution: force all locales to have also the UTF-8 brother, and force installation of such locale when user choose (at installation time) a non UTF-8 locale. C is not offered at installation time (but IIRC KDE offered at first run, some versions ago). For building env I prefer a us_EN.UTF-8 (we need English to read logs) or build when needed (better because probably we need other locales to test, and probably some packages needs some Asian locale for building/testing) Andrew McMillan dixit: Once this minimum step is made, and we've all calmed down, we can think further on radical and dramatic changes over coming years where more significant shifts are made, like: * The default locale at installation is C.UTF-8 rather than C. That would be nice. C is not the default locale. en_US.UTF-8 is the default (d-i of lenny, pressing only ENTERs). Andrew McMillan dixit: [...] and indeed Steve Langasek has already suggested a seemingly reasonable workaround for the immediate problem which was, funnily enough, that mksh wants to have a UTF-8 locale *available* in order for it to *test the build*... Yes, his suggestion and searching for someone to actually use it (Daniel Jacobowitz does) helped that part of the problem. However, the mksh regression test suite is only one of the manifestations. Even as a mere user, I'd like to have, see above, a UTF-8 locale available and, if possible, default. Well, maybe not a UTF-8 locale, just UTF-8 encoding (especially when I ssh from a MirBSD system to a Debian system, since on MirBSD there is *only* UTF-8¹), but glibc defines encodings exclusively via locales, which is why I'm in fa- vour of C.UTF-8 for myself, but setting LC_CTYPE only has the same effect (and I often set LC_MESSAGES to en_GB.UTF-8 for gcc's bene- fit). But your case is very specific (to building package). And in these case we want a minimal build environment. Additionally it is for testing purpose, so you test UTF-8, other package maybe needs other locales. Anyway I agree that a UTF-8 locale could be installed by default (also on pbuilder), but I we need also a locale utility for debian/rules, and that user has the right UTF-8 locale (so for a generic user, not C.UTF-8, but xz_YW.UTF-8, if is normally using xz_YW) ciao cate -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. The version of libqca2-plugin-gnupg in debian is very old. I was always waiting for an official upstream release, but even now, the latest version available is a 'beta3'. ASCII-7 characters need to be encoded as a single char (octet), with values between 1 and 127, but not necessarily with ASCII values. With a quick look, it seems that all locales implement are ASCII compatible charsets, which is also very nice for filename portability (also between users and system). Bug#521865: linux-image-2.6.29-1-powerpc: keyboard not working at all

I'm forwarding this bugreport to the list in the hope that I'm not the only powerpc person having this problem. It would be great if others can confirm the issue - or even a worksforme. If there is no worksforme I guess raising it back to grave is justified because powerpc is a release architecture. I am running a vanilla one at sid with no probs at all. As I know udev-0.140 has many changes which may affect your settings? Me too I don't have this problem with the vanilla kernel. What do you two mean with vanilla kernel? I'm used to that people refer to unpatched kernels - and usually the versions from kernel.org and *not* the Debian kernels. So if you mean that with vanilla kernel I would ask you to give the mentioned kernel image from unstable a try. With vanilla kernel I meant a kernel compiled from an unmodifed linux-2.6 git tree. Upstream without Debian patches. I now also tested the Debian package linux-image-2.6.29-1-powerpc version 2.6.29-2. I can't reproduce your bug with this kernel. The internal keyboard, an externel usb keyboard and a bluetooth mouse are working. Same kernel configuration? Sorry, I don't exactly understand your question. Same to what? I tested the binary package from the Debian Archive. So the kernel configuration is the same as for all other ppl who tested the same binary package. I don't know if 2.6.29-1 and 2.6.29-2 have the same configuration. But the configuration is not the same as the self built kernels I tested previously. My machine is a PowerBook5,8. Same here, and I can't reproduce the problem with vanilla 2.6.29.1 either. But my configuration for this is very different from the Debian kernels, e.g. no initrd. As several ppl have confirmed that the bug does not exist for them with custom built kernels and with debian kernels I think we can conclude that this is not a generl PowerMac bug. It's either specific to Gerfrieds model or setup. Gaudenz -- Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Bug#523314: please use system file dialogs by default
Package: openoffice.org-common Version: 1:3.0.1-9 Severity: wishlist Hi, installing openoffice.org-gnome or openoffice.org-kde doesn't switch to using the desktop environments file dialogs (GTK+ or Qt) by default. One has to uncheck the option: Tools-Options-OpenOffice.org-General-Use OpenOffice.org Dialogs first. I'd be nicer to use the desktop environments file dialogs by default though, since: * the user might have customized them (display dot file by default, gtk bookmarks, etc.) * the OOO open/close file dialogs don't offer any nice features that one could miss * it makes the Debian Desktop Experience (tm) more consistent This change can be achieved by either simply not shipping OO 3.0: /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/Office/Common/Common-UseOOoFileDialogs.xcug OO 3.1: /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.1/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/Office/Common/Common-UseOOoFileDialogs.xcug or by setting UseSystemFileDialog = True in the above file. This doesn't have any negative effects if neither openoffice.org-gnome nor openoffice.org-kde are installed - OOO simply switches back to the OOO dialogs in that case. Please consider changing the default. Cheers, -- Guido -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#523323: missing source code
Package: openarena Version: 0.8.1-2 Severity: serious Some parts of the openarena source code seems to be missing from the debian packages, in particular the files that are supposed to be in code/cgame/. These files contain the actual game logic, so I think the compiled versions of these files end up in the openarena-data package somewhere. Still, it's the core part of the game, and I definately think it must be included in the debian package. Actually, it might even be required by policy to build these files from use for the openarena-data package. Bug#523320: libnxml0: crashes with non well-formed xml
Package: libnxml0 Version: 0.18.3-2 Severity: normal I had some crashes with newsbeuter. After some investigations I discovered the cause: an unescaped ampersand. Galeon (the browser I use, gecko-based) throws an XML parsing error, while newsbeuter crashed with segfault. Could the library fail gracefully instead of dying miserably? I attach the backtrace obtained with lib{nxml,mrss}0-dbg packages, and the culprit xml. ciao Riccardo -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: lang=it...@euro, lc_ctype=it...@euro (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages libnxml0 depends on: ii libc6 2.9-6 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcurl3-gnutls 7.18.2-8.1 Multi-protocol file transfer libra libnxml0 recommends no packages. libnxml0 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information (gdb) bt #0 0x0012 in ??
